Microcenter has dropped price ...AMD 5800x $429

I noticed the price drop earlier today. It looks like it's $20 off most of the AMD CPUs which stay in stock all the time now whereas before they were at MSRP only. It looks like stock of 5600x and 5800x is returning or will be returning to closer to normal levels soon. MC might even start motherboard combos with them as well which they have not done yet.

It says right above the description in the link that is has the $20 off bundle with eligible motherboard.

It says that on every CPU but if you go to the CPU's page or CPU/motherboard bundles there's nothing for them other than some of the 3xxx series.

All you have to do is get an am4 motherboard with it. If it doesn't ring up the discount automatically, any manager will honor what it says on the website.

It says the discounts are for specific bundles and there have been no bundles with 5xxx CPUs that I've seen.

Not sure why there's confusion. Its simple:

5600X = $279
5800X = $429

Buying either CPU with a MB knocks $20 off the motherboard.

Frankly for the price difference I'd probably still go with a 10600k if I was shopping for a 6c/12t.
Its 90$ less and pretty equivalent speed wise and with overclocking might even be a bit faster, you just gotta deal with the extra heat.
Same goes for the 5800x, the 10850k is 110$ less and on par.

Only took 13 years for them to become the budget option lol
But yeah, if you don't care for the PCIe 4.0 connectivity (which most people probably won't until something like DirectStorage comes out), the entire Comet Lake K-sku stack is really compelling for a good gaming build right now.

With how hard it was to obtain a 5000 series CPU much less purchase one at about MSRP for a few months, I do not blame some celebrating a small victory.

Is the special when you open it and find a pentium 4 in there? :D
One time I got a 3700x home from microcenter and it had a handful of bent pins, bad enough that there was a chance of breaking them off if I tried to straighten them. An hour back to microcenter to return it and they exchanged it for a new in box one. I am more careful to inspect the open box stuff when I pick it up now. Another time since then, I got an open box motherboard, but it was missing the heatsink brackets, so unless I had a cooler that screws into the back plate, I was out of luck. Pointed it out to the cashier, they gave me a new in box one at the open box price.

bought my cooler master h500 case i love teh 200 mm fans :p was missing half teh stuff acc inside got teh case for 65 bucks its normally 100 bucks.

The real deals at microcenter are the open box items, especially on motherboards and cpus because you not only get it at a price lower than shelf price but the $20 off combo price still applies.

The stipulation in my experience is that they'll only combo-discount an openbox item if they do not have stock of the new version of the same item.

CPU openbox is also elusive - Tustin MC always swears they "don't do openbox CPU's and send them back to manufacturer", but then other MC locations apparently do, so maybe the policy is store-specific.

They exist. Just rare.

I'm keeping my eye out on a 5900x at a couple different Microcenters and hoping there's an open box version of a motherboard I want and maybe even RAM when I go.

If the 5800x were $369.99 , I could be moved to get one. Right now, even with the discount ($429), the 5800x is the most expensive on a per-core $ amount. It's the worst deal of the 5000 series.
I'm looking out for the 5900x, for my use case.
That's my problem too. I saw the 5800X in the glass case at MC, but just ended up buying a 10-core 10900k for $329, and two more 5600X @ $279.

There are so many high performance-per-dollar 8-core offerings now, that even at $429, 5800X is in a weird position.

Yeah, the 5800X is about the same bad value that the 3800X was, and without the (much better) option of buying a 5700X for 98% of the performance and ~20% less cost. I'm still looking to upgrade my 2700X that I really don't need to upgrade as it doesn't seem to be holding me back any at 3440x1440 @120Hz, but I feel like I might as well since my X470 mobo allows for the easy swap and it's a big IPC improvement to Zen 3. But I only paid like $200 (used on FS/FT) for my 2700X 2 years ago and don't want to pay much more for a newer 8/16 core/thread CPU, so it seems I'll be waiting a bit for that price point for Zen 3 or I can get a 3700X now for around that price used.

I was in the same school of thought.. Did get a 5800x though.. But not till I could snag one for 400 shipped (from the FS/T forums so no tax). This made it slightly cheaper then the 5600x per core. Which I already had, but I needed another CPU for my kid. So instead of her getting a 3600x for 213 (incl tax) from BB I got a upgrade. Been wanting a 5900x since the 5k series dropped, but havent been able to find one for MSRP or even remotely close to it.

I dunno. I was in the same boat. Coming from a 3900x I wanted at least the same core count. Ultimately I couldn't justify it. The computer is mainly for gaming with some music production with Ableton. May be slightly slower but whatever.

I feel like I typed that as I red it b/c that's basically exactly the position I'm in right now. Same 2700x, same $200 original purchase price, same upgrade goals. Crazy.

This was similar to my position, only I had a 3600. I needed a CPU for one of the kids who was still rocking a Pentium G3258 and it just doesn't cut it anymore, even for minecraft. I really wanted the 5900x but those are simply impossible to get at MSRP, or even very close to it. So when I saw that MC had discounted the 5800x I decided that was the move.

My 5900x dreams are over, I don't see me upgrading again on this platform. The next upgrade will be a GPU and that's probably 2 years away, assuming the RX 580 holds up.

$20 whole dollars off for a pretty overpriced cpu. And you have to drive there to get it.....

Wow, the tragedy of having to drive somewhere to pick something up. Oh the agony, how ever did people do such a thing? Where's my FedEx driver?

There's an entire world out there. You should check it out at least once in a while. It is a pretty cool place.

Also, $20 off isn't huge, but considering this is a new product that was sold out for months and is still highly in demand, it is not a bad deal at all. It brings the 5800x much more in line with the 5600x and 5900x. They also give you another $20 off if you buy a motherboard, and there's no reason not to if you need one because they are price competitive on boards. I paid $80 for the x570 board I'm using now (it was open box, regular price is $110).

PS - if you are such a penny pincher that a discounted 5800x is a horrible deal, then all three Zen 3 CPUs are a bad purchase for you. The ultra parsimonious must wait until the non-x CPUs in the series are released. There is no equivalent value to the $200 launch price 3600. Given supply issues, you could be waiting for quite a while.

Im unsure of what your point is here. I think you probably typed all of that not using your brain first maybe. A two hour drive to save $20? If youre really suggesting that driving 2 hours to save $20 is worth it, financially you might be in trouble! Also, some peoples time have value as well so....

Also, it is pretty much widely agreed upon that the AMD 5 series CPUs are pretty overpriced.... The 5800 of the pack being the worst priced of them all. Theres no way a 5800x is worth $450, or even close to that. So saving $20 for an overpriced cpu is still not a good deal. When the 5800x hits $350, then we can talk about something.
