so Taiyo Yuden is merged w/ JVC, and JVC is bought out by CMC.

CMC CD-R are all made in Taiwan.

does that mean if the old JVC is all gone, we can't get CD-R made in japan?

who exactly make Cd-R in japan?

Are you talking about the device, or the media?

Aren't the CMC Pro branded discs still made in Japan?

People still use CDs?

There are quite a lot of folks that still use them, such as long term file backup (nothing huge, but for smaller word, excel, and adobe files, quite a lot of them can fit onto a single 700MB disc), or even small/new bands that master their own music CDs and sell them at gigs, local music shops, etc.

nm about the cmc pro - those are now made in taiwan

I'll give it to you for gigs. The other? I would never trust a backup on a cd. You look at one the wrong way and you're asking for CRC errors.

Seriously who would use a CD over a USB stick. Every computer has a port. Barely any have a disc drive anymore. They are faster and easier to handle also.

USB sticks also suffer from degradation, just from read/write fatigue rather than bitrot (although they also suffer bitrot, it's slower). They're good if you aren't constantly overwriting data on them, though.

Sure. What ever you use you should have a back up if the data is important to you.

If you want reliable backups, use LTO. It is also one of the few formats that is legally acceptable (Chain Of Custody, Time/Date Verification, Anti Tampering, etc) via a WORM cartridge.

I need to check in the garage. Used to be a Japanese CD-R purist and I have a few spindles in there. lol

what brand name? I could buy it from you if it's made in japan.

I use CD-R for music CD. I burned 130 music Cd in the past 2 mth.

Taiyo Yuden was my brand of choice. Flashing back to SuperMediaStore in 2008!!! Oh crap that's DVD-R. Heh. Probably need to go even further back for CD-R.

I just thought about it and I don't currently own any optical media besides maybe some driver discs in motherboard boxes. I don't even own anything that would play one outside of my car.

MP3's generally sound like crap on good equipment compared to raw CD audio. Vinyl on the other hand, the crap sounds so good, who cares about the sound.

I went to that website this morning, they are all made in taiwan

A better question is: since CMC move to made in Taiwan, who do we have that their CD-R is made in Japan?

they are the same thing, minus location. they are as good as youre gonna get for that old shit.
no they are not the same thing. I have some CMC Maxell DVD+R. Burn once, and keep in storage. A year or may be few years later, I dig them out to transfer some program back to my SSD. They can't read the disk.

Somehow, some fragment of the disc becomes bad. So CMC to me is bad news.

Now, ebay has some professional grade CD-R, such as Maxell, but it costs too much

so the $1 million question is, the JVC cake box w/ 100 disc is a good price. If they are out, does that means people who wants high quality CD-R has to pay those an arm & a leg price on those Maxwell CD-R?

this for eg. is $0.9 / disc. Pioneer, made in Japan. The other day, I bought 6 barrel at $0.28 per disc + $100 shipping & tax for 6 barrels. So what would you do? Stock up some more, I have 600 currently.

Reminds me in college when I had to do a presentation and I put my powerpoint on floppy disks. The professor didn't have a floppy drive and mocked me for still using one. I felt so embarrassed. I think I was still holding out on getting a usb drive back then.

ohhh guys have we found one of those folks that still thinks its 1996 and you get the best 'burn' at 1x speed? :D

(Ignoring the fact the layer formulation is optimised for a 22x or higher speed but there you go...)

Vinyl is great if you love listening to tracking distortion after 4 minutes of playing time.

Yeah they are like slightly more reliable Floppys with 500x the amount of shit to lose. No thanks. Pressed CDs are a whole different thing though usually.

Think you misread the delivery on that one. Someone needs to invent a sarcasm font.
Nah I just love piling on how actually crap vinyl is for sound reproduction. Too many laws of physics against it.

I have old audio CD's that i've polished with brasso to work again. They don't look like they should work, but somehow do. I miss picking cassette tapes up from under my car mat and banging the dirt out on my boot and then having them just work.

Back in the day you needed quality media for PSX, PS2 and Xbox 360 backups. Japanese media was the gold standard. Many times you’d use a cheap brand and your backup simply wouldn’t work but if you put it on Yuden or similar media it would work great. I believe lots of people also used Maxell and Fuji.

Nah I used the cheapest disc I could buy for my psx and ps2 "backups" and never had a issue. I can't say anything for their longevity since my binders of "backups" got stolen a long time ago. I bet the asshole that broken in my mom's house and stole my shit were pissed they didn't get real games. They didn't take my ps2 either so all of the "backups" were useless to them. Then didn't touch my legit games since they were all in their cases.

I always said back then what I’m about to say now: cheap spindles of blank media were hit or miss and if you want to know for sure your media isn’t a problem you buy certain media and burned at slow speeds. This was just the rule of thumb and by no means meant that cheap media couldn’t be used.

I also made many a backup on cheap media that worked fine too at both high speed and low speed. I also burned plenty of cheap media that didn’t work so fine especially during play. I ended up replacing everything with good media and never encountered any issues afterward. I also can’t speak to their longevity either as I haven’t tried loading one in ages. I still have it all in binders in a closet somewhere along with a PS2 slim in its original box. I probably won’t be bothered to ever get it out again though. Might be a fun test though.

I still have a spindle of Taiyo DVD-R and CD-R discs. At my current rate of burning 1 disc per year for some random need, I think they'll last me forever.

If you have at least 500+ CD-R, and they are made in Japan, and you don't want it, I'll buy it off you, depends on the price
