I might be insane but I'm considering returning/exchanging the card for an Asus TUF (which is the 3080 I really want)...I still haven't opened the EVGA FTW3...I'm hearing a few stories about the FTW3 Ultra dying (I'm assuming because of the insanely high power draw)

I can't sell the card because Micro Center has a policy of only 1 GPU purchase per month (for the new Ampere/Navi cards)...so if I sell the card then I can't buy another one from them for 30 days...if I return it I can get a new one right away

Sell the card at cost to a member here. Hav your sig other get you a card and reimburse them?

This is the exact card I was looking to get, just as I am sure MANY members are.

How are they enforcing that policy? Do they require identification? Do they allow cash purchases? If the later two just borrow a buddies drivers license and bring a wad of cash.... hide it in your sock though otherwise when you get mugged for hanging outside Microcenter at 3am they only get your wallet not your stack o cash :D

I paid with a debit card and they required ID...I think with cash purchases they still require ID...when I was there I saw them kick one guy out for trying to purchase a 2nd card...they don't want people scalping which is the reason for the policy...

You have an account and they look up your history based on that.

My $0.02 on EVGA FTW3 versus TUF. TUF is great, but EVGA is better - meaning I'd rather own an EVGA supported card than an ASUS supported one.

You can return the card, but they will look down on that too - so be prepared if you stand in line in the morning to be shot down because you already had a 3080 and returned it (they must assume you could not make a few bucks on eBay so you returned it?). They did that to me over a 6800 XT (ironically an ASUS TUF) that I returned because I couldn't stomach the new tariff price ($1k+ after tax). I even returned it like 8 hours later. It's a good policy but unevenly enforced, IMO.

ASUS Tuf pretty much universally acknowledged to have a better cooler this go round (ampere). EVGA pretty much universally acknowledged to have the best customer service and warranty support in the Business (any go round). Which to buy depends on which you value more I suppose.

I would NOT return an EVGA card to the retailer for fear of failure, and heat and performance is probably largely inconsequential on these cards outside of bench stats.

The main reason I would want a Tuf primarily over a FTW is that the Tuf has two HDMI ports. (If that matters to you). HDMI 2.1. One to OLED monitor, One to Home Theater Display is hopefully my future setup. Whether you need 2 HDMI 2.1 ports or not is probably the clear and only real deciding factor to me, since the EVGA only has a single HDMI 2.1 port. I don’t expect either card will fail during warranty timeframe.

they can't deny me a return if it falls within the return window period...it's an unopened box...I literally bought it yesterday...I want to do an exchange for the TUF if they have it in stock otherwise I'll do a return

EDIT: I mis-read your post...you were referring to them denying me a 2nd GPU purchase within a month

performance/cooling/temps matter more to me which is why I prefer the TUF...I've never had to RMA a GPU so the customer service/warranty is secondary...with the FTW3 Ultra temps are excellent but I think it uses the most power of any 3080 card

It only uses the more power because it has a higher power limit for more performance if you want it. You can turn down the power limit in Precision X1 or Afterburner to have it pull the same amount as the TUF and get the same performance.

The only reason there was to get a TUF is because it was an incredible value. But since ASUS jacked their prices way up, the TUF OC isn’t that great value wise anymore at $840 (they apparently stopped making the cheaper non-OC variant). Especially next to the FTW3. Not to mention the ASUS Ampere cards are notorious for bad coil whine. The 3090 TUF I had before had such bad coil whine I had to return it.

Wow so the single place where getting a card wasn't a wild west like crapshoot, because they only sell in store and not that best buy level of "in store" actually you need to go to a store where the card is physically shipped to prior to anyone knowing it's there, and they add one more layer of protection by checking ID? Damn props to Microcenter... also fuck Microcenter for leaving the area around here many years back :D
 
I picked up an EVGA FTW3 Ultra from Micro Center on Wednesday (Brooklyn location) but I went back again today (early morning) to see if I could snag my preferred Asus TUF or Strix and do an exchange...the Gaming Gods were not kind...they had 1 model of 3080 in stock- MSI Gaming X Trio but I think my FTW3 Ultra is better so I passed on that...they also had a ton of 3070 and 3060 Ti cards in stock (one 3090 too)...you didn't even need to be one of the first in line to snag one

does your local microcenter.com storefront show these as "in stock / in store only" or were they unlisted and literally luck of the draw when you walk in?

Q&A section says this is the Rev 1.0 model, which has two 8-pin power connectors instead of three. That is probably why no one is buying it. Also doesn't help that there are no pictures or description on that page.
 
Prices for MSI, PNY and Zotac 3000 series cards have apparently gone up again on Newegg. This could be indicative of the rumored second price hike due to increases in GDDR5/6/6X costs. Newegg was the first retailer to increase prices due to tariffs last time so this may be credible.

For example, the MSI 3080 Ventus OC is now $1059. This used to be a $750 MSRP card I believe.

crazy...makes my $850 3080 FTW3 Ultra seem like a bargain...I can't believe that I even spent $850 on a GPU...by far the most I've ever spent on one
 
Far as I am concerned both sides cards can rot before I will pay these prices. A video card should not cost more then a Asus Dark hero motherboard and 5900X cpu that I got.

Well when you think about how much more robust a GPU is than a CPU........traditionally it always seemed a little weird to me that CPUs used to cost more than GPUs — and that motherboards could be found so cheap.

Yeah a high end video card is basically a processor + memory + a partial motherboard + a high end cooler. A high end CPU is just a CPU and typically doesn't even come with a cooler.

And a GPU matters a hell of a lot more than a CPU for gaming. Wayyyyy more bang for your buck. Most people could have the lowest end current generation CPU and not tell the difference for nearly any task including gaming. But the difference between the lowest end GPU and the highest while gaming is night and day.

Guess I'll be trying to score one while I'm here in Europe then, esp. since I can get stuff here without VAT/tax which would have probably been cheaper in the first place than trying to buy one from a US retailer and having it shipped to me.

I remember they advertised 30x series cards as much cheaper and more poverful than 20x series. I bought my 2080TI for 1400 EUR. And when I saw 3080 advertised for 800 USD that is almost twice cheaper than 2080ti and more powerful I was sad I bought 2080ti. Not anymore.

Another 2080 ti owner here, the only reason I want a 3000 series is hdmi 2.1 for the 8k display on my desk.
 
Guys if you want to trade your 2080 Ti for a 3000 series card, I have a 3060Ti I'll trade you but you have to add $600 plus your card.
