Folding@Home bigadv EOL 2nd Anniversary Challenge: The Race is over.

Yes I have a 3080 and a small handful of 3070's they get around 4.7 and 3.3 respectively at around 75% power in windows
Good call on the power limit. These cards are hard enough to get. My 3080 is in my primary rig so I'd like to have it last a while. I'm only folding with it for this contest but at 75%.

Previous testing for the 1080 showed that the optimal points per day per watt was somewhere between 50% and 60%. Different generations of cards will have different results, but given how far on the (non) efficiency scale Nvidia set the 30X0 series, I'm guessing you can really back it off to about 50% with minimal drop in ppd compared to drop in power usage.

That's also true for gpu BOINC projects. https://hardforum.com/threads/gpu-crunching-efficiency.1921249/
Also, one can gain a little bit more on power efficiency by tweaking the voltage-frequency curve but not sure how to do this in linux. Linux by itself is already running the gpu card more efficient than windows in FAH, so adding the power limit can get additional efficiency gain.

I didn't realize I wanted to do a build in a Compaq Presario case until just now. Sweet case! 👍

I just looked and there are a bunch on eBay but most of them the plastic is all yellow, and they're way overpriced. Maybe a better thing to get from a thrift store or Craigslist.

I just lower the power limit.
For nvidia cards in Linux:
sudo nvidia-smi -pl 180
"-pl" is "power-limit" and the # is watts.
If you have more than one card, the command above will change the power limit on both cards to 180 watts.

If you want to change the power limit in the card at device "0" (usually top pci slot)
sudo nvidia-smi -i 0 -pl 180
If you want to change the power limit in the card at device "1" (usually second pci slot)
sudo nvidia-smi -i 1 -pl 180

I was wondering about F@H GPU in Linux. I have the same card as I did last year and I'm putting out much better PPD this year. As in around double the PPD. For the contest last year I had my RX570 running full time as well as my son's RX570 part time. I only have mine running this year and it's putting out the same or better PPD than two of them did last year. The only major difference is that I've basically abandoned Windows and have been running Manjaro exclusively whereas last year everything was run under Windows. I figure there could have been some changes with F@H and the work units but I would never have expected a increase this large.

Stanford added CUDA support to FAH. That's why the big increase across the board for Nvidia cards, close to double on everything NV. Radeons use OCL so no change for them. Probably better to steer team Red to BOINC

Coal is so dirty and inefficient....and yet, I find myself tossing buckets full of it into the boilers! Hang on [H]! I am taking the ole steam boilers to 115% rated capacity! (In other words, I have added 5M ppd...far too little, and far too late, probably. :( )

Looks like he woke up. I was MIA for awhile, when did he defect to TAAT? 10esseeTony added 5M too from post above.

Think it was a couple of years ago now but he was on the forum here somewhat till more recently and now is a deleted member.

Thx motq. He was a real steady on the forums and we were Steam friends briefly. Hopefully he wasn't banned for something serious. I don't want to hijack the thread tho. We need to find some moar ppd - only 2 days to go ...

This one is going to be close right to the end. Great race, and a ton of Folding has been accomplished on both sides.- it will end up with over 2.5 billion points combined by the end of the race!

Didn't realize there was a race going on. I added 3 computers, with not terribly old GPUs. It's winter time for me, so electric cost doesn't matter since I need the heat anyhow. TBH, completely forgot about F@H for quite a few years.

How do I set them at 50% or 60%? Do I just use the web client interface and set power level to Medium?

So i would keep the folding power slider at full unless you are finding the rig to be too laggy to use for other reasons. If you want to reduce power and heat the easiest thing to do is load up MSI afterburner and lower your GPU power target. I have mine set to around 75% on most of my GPU's and this helps keep temps down quite a bit without too much of a dent to the overall points output.

If it were me, and there's not a compelling reason to do otherwise I would leave them at the full power target until the race is over. Using a little bit more electricity for such a short time period / it being a bit less efficient shouldn't be a huge deal across 3 computers for under 24 hours. Unless there is a compelling reason like it's on a circuit with a ton of other stuff and may trip a breaker, or the GPU's are overheating or something else I wouldn't worry about it. On such a close race every point could end up being the difference.

I'm also from the opposing team, and this advice is against my own team's best interest, so take it with as much of a grain of salt as you'd like :ROFLMAO:

Motq you're showing 32M ppd right now so I'd imagine the needle on the power meter must be zooming around in circles, power target be damned. Then again maybe you've got a small "arm"y of Raspberry Pi's but with only 8100 WU's I'd say its mostly GPUs. Remote farming? BC Hydro might have decent electricity prices but that's gotta hurt if all in one location. Whatever it is keep it up. I'll gel the hair and put it straight up for easier mowing in a few weeks. Can't get a haircut during this lockdown anyways ...

Make sure to tell them thanks for all that ETH they left on the table while they were switching over their mining rigs for the comp.
