I purchased a Dell laptop model XPS 15 7590 in May 2020. I came loaded with windows 10 home. I had an old desktop with windows 7 ultimate. The desktop was trashed. My question is, can I upgrade my new XPS laptop to Windows 10 Pro and use the product key from win 7 ultimate ?

Thanks

You would have to do a clean install of Windows 10 Pro but put in the 7 Ultimate Product key during installation.

You could try going into Settings and searching for "Activation settings" and clicking on "Change product key" then type in your 7 Ultimate key to see if it upgrades to Pro, but I'm not sure if that would work. Normally you would only do this with a 10 Pro upgrade key.

Thanks Chris. Not looking forward to do a clean install of Windows 10 Pro. Laptop is running fine. I would wait until I have an issue with win 10 home and need to reinstall. Then I install win 10 pro.
Then I had this idea. Partition my laptop SSD and install win 10 pro on second partition. If that works, then delete win 10 home. Comments ?

Thanks

What features are you looking for in Pro?
I don't need any extra feature from Win 10 pro. To be honest, I am retired and Covid has me house bound. Middle of winter and I needed something to do. That's it !! Win 10 home is not broken and reinstall is a lot of work.
Thanks

I wouldn't do that myself.

Did you try typing in the key to see if that works?

No. I will wait until I have a problem with Win 10 home and need to reinstall. Then I will install Win 10 pro and type my key for win 7 ultimate. I can wait
I have ideas now. You guys are the best. I check the website every day
Thanks

Just try an in place upgrade from home using the Win7 ultimate key.
I enter Win 7 ultimate product key and it took it. Screen read "Upgrade your edition of Windows . Upgrading will add new features to windows" I could choose Start or cancel
If I start, will it load Win 10 pro on top of home ? What is it going to do ?
Advise...

That is correct, it will upgrade it to Windows 10 Pro.

I need to save a few documents before I upgrade. Let you know outcome !
I upgraded. That was too easy. It took less than 5 minutes. I learned something today. It shows Win 10 Pro activated, version 1909.

Was the Windows 7 key a Retail key or an OEM key? I assume the Windows 10 Home was OEM.

EDIT: The Windows 7 Pro Retail key worked on my Dell 3880 desk top.

oem keys will activate in a running windows install, did it on the system im on now. ive done it tonnes and only had one machine that just refused to work.
also, as op found, windows doesnt really install anything when doing this, it just adjusts what features are available based on the key its given. so it only takes a few minutes to upgrade.

I had an odd one the other day...

I had a HP all in one that refused to activate the embedded Windows 10 Home OEM key, I even extracted the key and attempted to add it manually and no matter what I did it wouldn't activate. Wiped and reinstalled Windows from the recovery partition, no dice.

I was hesitant to go any further as the device was covered by extended warranty provided by HP. Anyone come across this before?

My Windows 7 ultimate key was a Retail key. My laptop came with Windows 10 Home and was OEM.
