Setting up a brand new Acer laptop for a friend and it will not allow me to install apps from anywhere but the Microsoft store. I've Googled till I'm blue in the face and the bottom line is none of the settings used to change this are in this laptop. Can anybody me? Please.

What's the model? I'd like to say it's probably either an Arm version of Windows or else "Windows Lite" (not sure of the actual name, but basically Windows without all the legacy stuff, so no actual support for many 3rd party programs)...but can't be sure without knowing the exact product they have.

I was thinking Windows S.

It is probably a Windows S, you can transfert it to a windows Home license if you want to install application not from the store:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...ndows-10-4f56d9be-99ec-6983-119f-031bfb28a307

  1. On your PC running Windows 10 in S mode, open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
  2. In the Switch to Windows 10 Home or Switch to Windows 10 Pro section, select Go to the Store. (If you also see an "Upgrade your edition of Windows" section, be careful not to click the "Go to the Store" link that appears there.)
  3. On the Switch out of S mode (or similar) page that appears in the Microsoft Store, select the Get button. After you see a confirmation message on the page, you'll be able to install apps from outside of the Microsoft Store.

Thanks guys. It is Windows 10 Home in S mode so that explains it. Just another way for M$ to milk the sheep.

upgrading to full home is free...
they are really meant to be use in a school that uses all ms.
edit: what Luke said...

Fully free to go to Home (but you cannot revert back to S easily has the security would be compromised) it is just a more secure version of windows that would only run signed application in VM (i.e. store apps).

I learned all this today by the way has a work from home coworker had issue installing stuff on is new laptop, that was a windows S (didn't knew that even exist, at first I thought it was a windows Arm device like the previous surface I had that ran only windows store app).

What a disservice to pupils that would be...
why? they need office apps and/or internet. they were meant to be like a chromebook but ms based. then when needed, like in higher grades, they can be converted to home for free.

Conditioning them to Microsofts paid products when they could use free alternatives is a major disservice. Not the least because it will bring them all sorts of extra harm later on (viruses etc).

Once again thanks guys. Got everything done I need to get done and learned something thanks to all of you.

Yep, came here to say this as well. Sure, I have decided to use Ubuntu Linux exclusively on my personal machines, for privacy and security reasons. (Objective reasons, not touchy feeling reasons.) But, having the government break up Microsoft would do nothing but provide a greater market share to the other monopolies that support them directly.

I have no issues with Windows itself and like it but, I also understand the reasons I decided to use something else, objectively. I am actually surprised Windows S still exists, since they really have not supported it in years.

Microsoft should have been broken up a long time ago. The government did the people a disservice by not doing so.

Give me a logical, objective, long term reasoning that benefits us and not the government because I cannot see one.

Actually, B00nie has a perfectly valid point. Fact is: The forced use of proprietary products from primary to high school is a blatant conditioning of our young and no mistake on behalf of Microsoft or Adobe - Or Google.

Propriatery products should be avoided as much as possible in the lower levels of education for this very reason. If children grow up and find proprietary product training is needed, that's what tertiary education is for. I believe they should all be using Pi400's, not only would it keep ever rising costs down, they could learn how to code instead of just mindlessly opening some Adobe or Microsoft product.

"There is none so blind as he who will not see."

Open your eyes and see where Microsoft is leading us all. Our freedom is slowly being eroded away and Microsoft (and others) are leading the way. If you can't or won't see this I have nothing further to say to you.

I ask again: Give me a logical, objective, long term reasoning that benefits us and not the government because I cannot see one. I am quite serious because saying open your eyes does not answer my question.

and what do you suggest then, open source linux that has its own issues?! apple, like boonie actually uses, which is even more locked in and proprietary?!

Your ignorange, and B00nie's, is showing. Just because you need to install through the MS Store, doesn't lock you into "proprietary products".
Want Open Office instead of MS Office? Guess what, OpenOffice is in the MS Store, along with several dozen other competitors, free and paid. Just install it. Done. Now you're free from whatever tyranny you've imagined about MS Office.
I could go on, but, I don't think I need to, and I don't really feel like wasting my time in doing so.

I more specifically switched to Ubuntu Linux on my personal computers for privacy and security reasons, at least locally. I have also stopped using cloud storage and pruned my android phone as much as I could. I like Windows and for work, I use it but, at home I just focus on using it just for gaming. With everything going on, privacy has become far more important than ever before.

I believe I already stated a suggestion. Why is the context of your replies always so nasty? Relax, you'll feel better.

And yet the OS is still proprietary and proprietary software is still being forced on developing minds, I know, I fix the devices. Furthermore, laptops are expensive, in fact outside the US tech is stupid expensive in certain regions and kids are rough as guts. A RPi400 gives Children and young adults a good grounding in modern computing with absolutely no capitalist influence whatsoever and it's cheap and affordable. The schools could supply the monitors, the kids supply their own RPi400.

This age of consumerism has been programmed into the minds of these Children from the moment they start school, furthermore it's no accident.

Feel free to point out my mistakes, otherwise you can keep your whine to yourself.

Your ignorance is what's showing. There are millions of people who have been conditioned to believe they absolutely need to pay for MS Office when in reality there's zero need to do that. It all begins from school where students are apparently taught you need Excel to do spreadsheets when the function of school is to educate, not lobby for a corporation.

Making students think they need Windows is akin to teaching students that prostitutes are the only way to go since paying for it is much easier than actually spending the effort to a relationship and a family.
