“Arctic is readying its first new high-performance thermal compound in over a decade, the MX-5. 4-gram syringes of the compound started surfacing on Amazon UK, where it's listed for £13.59 (includes UK VAT). The listing does not mention the all-important thermal conductivity or viscosity figures for the compound, but mentions that it is not metal-based (doesn't contain metal particles), is electrically non-conductive (so you can use it on bare FCBGAs/FCPGAs without an IHS) and is designed to hold integrity up to 8 years after an application. The listing mentions a "ships by" date of March 15, 2021, which is also its release date.”

I still swear by gelid gc-extreme. when I switched to that from arctic silver 5 I dropped like 8 degrees is non conductive and have never had it dry out.

makes me wonder why they are saying mx5 is good for UP TO 8yrs so I take it that eventually it will dry out?

AS5 isn't MX-4. AS5 has always been garbage, in my experience. By contrast, MX-4 is the best all-around thermal paste out there, in my opinion. If MX-5 improves on that formula in any way, I'll take it.

MX-4 has been my go-to for quite some time now. I have no complaints for any of the applications that I have used it for from desktop CPUs to mobile chipsets and everything in between. I look forward to the independent reviews hopefully showing that it is within 1° C of the other top of the line options out there...

I wonder if this has a burn in time, MX4 has been my go to due to the cost/performance/ease of use (spreading) combination.
I like Noctua's NT-H1/H2 for slightly better performance and the 0 burn in time for testing, but its pricey and doesn't spread quite as easily.

I'm interested to see the numbers on the MX5 if it has similar cost and usability.

I just got done with a tube of Artic Silver I bought in 2011 I picked up 4 more tubes a few years ago there us some fake stuff out there or people just load them up with Colgate toothpaste and resell them. Thinking of making a key chain out of the tubes they look like bottlerockets.

I did use mx-4 when I recently did my new build cause I couldn't find my tube of kryonut. It is fine and no complaints. Kryonut did the lord's work quiting my old ps4 pro but I am sure mx-4 would of been fine also.

I'm gonna hold out until someone releases Designer Thermal Paste

mx4 and as5 are my go-to's and have a tube of each on my desk. if im out and need some now, ill grab as5 locally. if im running out of that, i order mx4. i actually prefer the as5 for how it "handles", prob 'cause im used to it from using it for so long. ill try this next time, probably.

nope. maybe. ok a bit. but why specifically? that i flip flop based on whether i remember to order some or not? or that i still use as5 cause im not chasing the last .6c difference?
edit: you did ninja edit out the calling me crazy part....

no offense mate but read SLOWLY what you posted LOL .. really I can't stop laughing; not at you but what you said. Do you not see the humor in it?

How long do you all keep your spare thermal paste until tossing it?

I have some old as5(like 15 years old) that still looks good. I probably won't use it unless it's an emergency because I have newer stuff.

I still have a small bit of MX-2 in a syringe that I purchased probably 13 or 14 years ago. I last used some of it about a year ago and it was perfectly good. I'm pretty sure I had an application of it on one of my Q6600s for around 10 years. I eventually pulled that system completely apart to clean it thoroughly and when repasting and remounting the heatsink the temps hadn't changed one bit.

That's why a syringe of MX-4 was purchased when I last needed some new paste. Price is cheap enough, it spreads pretty easy, it cleans up pretty easy and it lasts forever in a syringe and after application.

Thanks for the laugh.... made me think of this

I never needed to buy thermal paste, there is always some leftover laying around that came bundled with some cooler. I bought one tube once because I've had some leftover store credit that I needed to waste on something.

dude as5 is trash. you couldn't pay me to put that stuff on my components. but if you're still gonna use it just make sure you check it after a few years because once it dries out, and you have some kind of vibration and you break the seal it's basically not gonna be doing anything because now there's just a layer of dust between heatsink and heatspreader. and could possibly make components overheat and cause damage?

I think that's what happened to a GTX 280 i bought off of ebay a long time ago. Luckily i got my money back on it. it would boot to desktop but as soon as you tried to run a game it would crash. the paste was all dried out. original owner was probably thinking he was doing good putting that crap on there.

I still have tons of GC-Extreme and NT-H1, but sure, let's add more thermal paste to that supply lol.

I struggle to see what good AS5 is anymore. Perhaps in a few limited situations its worth the hassle. The cure time with the old hassle of putting it on naked cpu cores back in the day meant I moved away from it back in 2007 and never looked back.
