I am building a new PC for my nephew. His budget is around $1,000 and I have him in a 9700k with z390, but am debating moving him to 10700k and z490. I believe LGA1200 is dead after this generation, but am not certain. I am going to lend him my 2080ti and sell it to him for $400 if he cannot get a 3000 or 6000 series GPU in the near future. Is it worth the jump? I will cover the spread if the consensus is it is worth it. Thank you.

If the difference is not huge I would do it. 10700K is a pretty great value right now from Intel hahaha.

Nice! Based on the options, unless the 9700K and z390 is significantly cheaper, I would go with the 10700k. He can always upgrade to the 11th gen while keeping the z490.

The 2080ti is better than the 3060 and in the same league as the 3070. For $400, that card is a great card for him. I don't think it's worth the jump.

There are z490 boards wired for pcie4 and that have the m2 socket to support it. Get one of those boards. Gigabyte has them z490 ready. Just fyi.

only thing to check is if this is one of those god awful chips they artificially locked behind a paywall, low pcie lanes, ram speed locked to 2933mhz, pigeon poop tim, 9th gen is probably safer if wanna avoid the headaches,

10th gen/ z490 is better in all those respects.

Same thing with the 9th Gen, and also previous gens. They are all artificially locked behind a paywall as well. In fact, some 9th-Gen CPUs have their RAM speed locked to 2666 MHz (aka DDR4-2666). And if you pick a K CPU but a non-Z chipset motherboard of any generation, the RAM speed will be locked to Intel's official specs of either the CPU or the RAM (whichever memory spec is slower).

All of Intel's CPUs are like that since it adopted x86-64.

here i thought it was something scummy they introduced in the 10th gen because they thought themselves gods, and ignored the ryzen amd cpus. thank you for this now i know to pick my 9th gens a lil more carefully and look closer at there detailed specs pages.

will rocket lake work on any z400 chipset or is it only z490? I'm trying to decide if I should get z490 or one of the cheaper options. according to this you don't need z490 to overclock: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_1200
z490 is the only "z400" chipset, do you mean 400 series? z490 is the only chipset that supports user OC by changing CPU multiplier. The others only support Turboboost, which is auto OC behaviour.
