Old video cards worth running?

My wife is getting my old 7700k and debating if an old video card is worth installing. She's been surviving with onboard graphics for a decade. Would an 8800 GT or Gtx 260 be worth the heat and power over HD 630 integrated graphics? Online video as demanding as she gets. I think it's probably a complete waste.

I think I have an 8800 GT in a GTX 260 box or vice versa in the garage but it looks like a cat may have pissed on it... Probably why I never sold it. Whatever happened I'm a little leery about just throwing it in to try.
 
Even if the card hadn't been pissed on. Its not worth installing. Modern Integrated graphics are superior to those old gas guzzlers.

I'd just OC the 7700K & if you want get a decently priced GTX 1030 2GB card. IF you can find one cheap enough, like $60 bucks cheap. That should be enough to stream even 4K without dropping any frames.

Good luck finding even one of those at a reasonable price. I remember I paid $64 bucks for one last year. Now , theyre selling for over $100 and thats just not worth it.

I would think the 7700k integrated would do that too. Don't they have hevc enc/decoders?

I'm not sure... Should. Ark.intel says 4k at 60hz is OK

"Hardware accelerated support for the H.265/HEVC codec starts with 6th generation Intel® Core™ processors." So it should work fine. :)
 
I think 8800GT would beat onboard video


Onboard video struggles on a 7700. I have one in my kitchen/family PC. My girls can’t even play simple games esport games without poor framerates.

touche' I read the O.P. too quicikly. For just video streaming it won't make a lick of difference.

A more pressing ethical dilemma might be, what if the piss-card was a GTX 3080? Would that be a compliment to the wife or an insult?

Latest driver for 8000 series is 2016, surprised it supports Win10

Win 10 came out in 2012 🙃
 
I know Win10 is 2015, I mean I'm surprised the driver was updated to 2016 even. Ten years of A-tier driver support is not too bad, what other industry supports products like that for so long?
 
Probably a waste but if it's sitting on a shelf collecting dust why not? I just did a quick shelf check and found I had a Gigabyte GTX 1060 6gb collecting dust... was replaced by a 2060 I bought from Kyle some time back that is in my older son's rig.. forgot I had it. My younger son will be getting an upgrade this afternoon.. thx 4 starting thread. :p

^^^^ To you fellow old farts reminiscing.. my desktop PC is running the same Win 10 install which I upgraded from an original Win 7 install that was never refreshed since release. I was in the Win 7 BETA program and cannot remember if I reinstalled. I have not done a fresh install of my desktop OS since 2009 at least. Some of the items in the default My Documents folder (which I do not use) are pretty nostalgic... BFBC2, Nero, 3DMark11... lol.

I have an old Lian Li case in my closet that's rocking an FX processor... EVGA 7900 GTO (512MB RAM!!!) and a Kenwood 72x CDR...

I still have my 8800 GTS 320Mb OC in the LeadTek Winfast box ..

side note .. if the RX 570 was still $129 new .. it offers a lot of tech for the price and maybe 125 watt card .

Nero...that's great. Back in the old physical media days. Yessiree.
 
The GTX260 might possibly be faster. Just keep in mind about driver support. The oldest Nvidia card supported by the current driver is the GTX 6xx series (GTX680, GTX670 etc). The oldest AMD card supported by the current driver is the 7xxx series (Radeon 7870, 7770, etc). Anything older than that, and you're using drivers that are just getting older and older. I still have a desktop using a GTX 470, the last driver for that was released in 2018. Driver support for the GTX 260 was dropped a couple years earlier than that. Some older drivers have issues with flickering in Windows 10 after the latest feature update, but fixed if you disable transparency effects in the GUI.
 
I am going to vote against the grain here and say whatever card is in the cat piss soaked box should be installed in the machine for your old lady. If she refuses your advances sell it on ebay.
 
The IGP is actually better for what she does. It has H.264 and H.265 decoding. Neither of the GPU's you found has H265. I'm not even sure if they have H264 codecs.

Yeah if all the OP's wife does is watch videos, I'm not sure why the OP is even asking this question. If the OP's wife did do some casual gaming though, I wouldn't let H.264 and H.265 hardware decoding be part of the equation at all. I have a stock i5-2500 (not 2500K) in my HTPC right now and even that old CPU at stock clocks is enough to do software decoding of 4K H.265.
