Are there any Bluetooth replacement technologies on the horizon?

I'm so over Bluetooth and how finicky and unreliable it is. It seriously never works reliably - it seems to just have "woke up on the wrong side of the bed" moments all too often and throw stutter and disconnect fits. No receiver or headphones ever worked anywhere near acceptable levels of reliability over any period of time.. it's maddening.

How has no technology replaced BT yet? Are there any serious efforts to replaec the technology being made anywhere?

"oh great, it doesn't pair"
*turn off BT on both devices, turn on*
"no go"
*repeat turn on and turn off*
*connected*
"oh nice, ok let's watch this now"
3 seconds later *disconnect*
*turns on and off*
some variation of the above
*turns on and off*
"works"
Until next time it decides to misbehave... which you know is just around the corner next time you want to just watch something without wires.

My BT Jabre in ears work perfectly every time with my phone and laptop, as well my JBL Flip speaker works flawless as well, also tie in my Schwiin spin bike that has BT to my computer picks up every single time...

BT isn't going away anytime soon, you're just having bad luck.

The problem is not every manufacturer implements it the best so you experience some inconsistency.

Weird, I've had these issues in all kinds of locations (work, home, outdoors) on Windows (Win 7 through 10, not sure if I used it in XP days) laptops, Chromebook, Macs, Linux, phones including a couple iPhones in the past and now Galaxy S8, all with different headsets and earpieces over the years including my latest two, Bose QC35 and QC35v2, and I don't buy low-end things.
And I'm a minimalist and have had all those things only ever connect 1-2 devices, so phone and whatever current laptop I was using (and not even simultaneously), so not like I was going around connecting it to different things every day and so maybe it gets confused ocassionally.

These things just shouldn't be happening, for so long, on so many different pieces of hardware.

I've had BT problems only on Windows. Especially Win7 with its gimped out BT stack that doesn't support streaming.

I've had great results with TaoTronics BT reciever+submitter I bought on amazon with my Aiwa ARC-1 headphones, can literally walk around my whole house without it skipping or losing connection, I've been several times brushing my teeth with the thing on without any issues. It's almost too good in the sense, the reciever has such a high priority that it doesn't seem to wanna share the audio with much else when connecting stuff to it, I've had to turn it off when wanting to connect to my TV downstairs because the BT dongle always seems to get the connection.

Tec don't like users that sets the rules. BT is better now, but still. I need 4 or 5 devices connected at the same time, and it is a mess. Disconnecting, connects to wrong thingy, reconnect fail, plundering with audio menu (press 4 for BT, 5 for settings, 6 for quit this menu)...

It comes down to implementation. Apple to Apple devices basically have zero issues, especially with the H1 chip. Even wireless keyboards and mice work on boot up on Macs.

Logitech does a fairly good job with peripherals, my MX Master 2S is always flawless and it's paired to multiple computers. But I noticed that my cheap earbuds definitely didn't work well (I moved to Airpods Pro and they're beyond flawless in terms of pairing). And now honestly I know why. You do get what you pay for.

Recently bought a Toyota Tacoma with BT. My phone, a Nexus 6 connects automatically half the time and half the time it doesn't. When it doesn't I can turn BT off then back on in the phone and it always connects then. Royal PITA. I've also had BT problems with Windows.

I have no problems with any Bluetooth device, be it speakers, my car, computers, headsets or anything else.

I have many BT devices and peripherals. Never had a single issue. You either have some bad luck or you’re exaggerating a bit.

In my experience, car connection issues is totally down to the implementation by the auto manufacture. Those OEM infotainments can be all over the board.

Also my Bang&Olufsen BT devices work flawlessly with Apple products

I just upgraded my car to latest Audi A4 (from my trusty old MB S500L 4-matic year model 2003 which surprisingly has more option extras than the Audi but no bluetooth. Hmm I wonder why :D ) and the BT implementation in that car works really well. Whenever I sit in the car, playback resumes like I never left...

It's funny how you learn to miss little details like electronicly adjusted steering wheel and seat for easy entry. They just make life that tad bit easyer.

I was also positively surprised that the audio quality in the Audi was actually surprisingly good. Easily matches the Bose system in my MB or the Skoda premium sound package.

BT is an awful standard, and most implementations of it are even worse. A possible alternative is Bluetooth Low Energy, which is a much better standard that is completely different to ordinary BT, despite the name.

For me it's the same what standard is used as long as I'm satisfied with how it works :) And I have to say the Audi sound system delivers a satisfying experience. Audio playback resumes from my phone automatically as soon as I power up the car.
