"Finding evidence for the cosmic dawn of technology will place our own existence and aspirations in a broader context. We wouldn’t have needed to invent the wheel if we saw it first spinning on our land under a rover manufactured by a more advanced species.

Currently, we have no clue for the sophistication level of the technologies that preceded us in the cosmos. But one thing is clear. If any of us would decipher an alien technology that represents a quantum leap relative to what we possess today, then that person will become extremely wealthy by marketing the same idea on Earth. The “gold rush” opportunity of mining the sky for new technological ideas offers a financial incentive for becoming an observational astronomer. In the long run, if—as many of us expect—we are not the smartest kids on the cosmic street, astronomy may offer prospects for more affluence than Silicon Valley or Wall Street."

I love it! Lets take humanity to space. We already have a big bad ass spaceship called Earth. Now lets leave it and colonize new other big spaceships. Can you even imagine some.of the elements on other worlds that we have yet to discover? Our periodic table is only our world. Imagine what others have in addition to ours.

Maybe if we got our shit together and became a space species far more intelligent life would make contact and share secrets of the cosmos we could only dream of.

Not who, but where in the hell are you John Galt?

Pretty sure he's in Boca Chica, Texas.

Most people will never have that insight ... we are space travelers traveling around the sun on a "ship" that sustains human life.

Well done and if I may ask, how did you arrive at that insight?

I have no idea but doesnt that make logical sense?

I dont mean to sound condescending, but i feel like 99% of humanity lacks vision, or IQ, or both to see past the next 3 mins much less working on sending humanity to the stars. But instead its more important to enslave, take, steal, loot, politic, war, kill, mame, and destroy each other for petty power and valuless green paper.

Sounds like someone needs more grant money.
shouldn't that add more credence to the news article with such esteem and high order? Mega6

It detracts from the article by exposing an "Agenda" by the author to promote Astronomy - specifically over Wall Street or Silicon Valley as referenced.

While a great sentiment, observing alien technology from hundreds/thousands of light years away (and then there's this other minor barrier of first needing to actually discover these aliens) is about the equivalent of a Amazonian tribe seeing a satellite streak through the night sky. They simply aren't going to glean very much if any useful information from such an observation other than "hey, look its a speedy little star!" The time/distances involved are simply going to crush any possibility of gaining any form of alien technology - unless of course it is purposefully being "beamed" at us.

The only "gold rush" there's going to be in our near future (within the next ~300 years) is our mining the asteroid belt and perhaps nearby moons/mars via colonies.

I'm all for further space exploration/development - but one has to be realistic about this stuff.

ever been abducted before tho? (just curious)

Man, you're looking way to deeply into this. This was an article that wasn't promoting any agenda, it was just talking about "what if" scenarios... which FYI there are plenty of existing methods of scanning the sky for a single source wavelength.

Everyone has an Agenda, physics is in your name LoL.

hmmm, it always does seem to be "the other people" doesn't it? But then, we're also "the other people" from their perspective, are we not?

a good read is Ludwig Boltzmann

Look him up, you might like what you read about him :barefoot:

I doubt any patent body would license a monopoly for discovered tech. You might be able to get one on manufacturing processes, but not the product.

and Mega is in yours, but I don't give it much of a second thought, and certainly don't think there's anything "mega" about you.
Way to make it personal. I'm so glad you care even though you say you don't. "Let's get Physical Baby!"

Exactly, erek!
wanna get a degree in Hypothetical Physics? sfsuphysics Mega6

i think i'm on to somethin, an opportunity that hadn't existed before ^

"Riker: "Who would want a Vulcan ship?"
Omag: "Hypothecially speaking?!"
Riker: "'Hypothetically speaking'."
Omag: "I never learned to speak hypothetical." [Laughs]

Is Theoretical Physics Wasting Our Best Living Minds On Nonsense?

"Today, we have theories that are highly fashionable, but without any evidence for them: supersymmetry, grand unification, string theory, and the multiverse."
a lot of those powerful and up and coming minds switched over to Financial Engineering :(

A lot of modern physics research is about getting grants and making a career. That is why many research physics focuses on ridiculous stuff such as manyworlds, extra universes, pre Big Bang, extra tiny dimensions, dark matter,... This way you can be making research for decades, without worrying that the experimental guys in the lab in the same building than you falsify your elegant 'theory' in a pair of weeks.

Boltzmann is that guy that ruined statistical physics and whole generations of physicists with his invalid ideas and 'proofs'.

If we ever find more advanced technology from an alien civilization, I can't wait to see what incredible things they created to watch porn

Well, from all the abduction stories, the aliens are only into anal.

You will need a degree in "Erotic physics" to understand it, though

Mining for cosmic tech never ends well. Didn't you see the Expanse or play Mass Effect? :D
