KFC Announces New Gaming Division

I found the story on why KFC is so popular in Japan around Christmas
https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20161216-why-japan-celebrates-christmas-with-kfc

According to KFC Japan spokeswoman Motoichi Nakatani, it started thanks to Takeshi Okawara, the manager of the first KFC in the country. Shortly after it opened in 1970, Okawara woke up at midnight and jotted down an idea that came to him in a dream: a “party barrel” to be sold on Christmas.
Okawara dreamed up the idea after overhearing a couple of foreigners in his store talk about how they missed having turkey for Christmas, according to Nakatani. Okawara hoped a Christmas dinner of fried chicken could be a fine substitute, and so he began marketing his Party Barrel as a way to celebrate the holiday.

In 1974, KFC took the marketing plan national, calling it Kurisumasu ni wa Kentakkii, or Kentucky for Christmas

In 1974, KFC took the marketing plan national, calling it Kurisumasu ni wa Kentakkii, or Kentucky for Christmas. It took off quickly, and so did the Harvard-educated Okawara, who climbed through the company ranks and served as president and CEO of Kentucky Fried Chicken Japan from 1984 to 2002.

Adding to this is the fact they announced more details about the KFConsole. It's going to have an Intel CPU and a hot swappable GPU slot where you can fit an nVIDIA GeForce RTX series card in and get ray tracing and possibly 4K resolution. Of course, those aren't the tough and important questions. These are: 1. Who is going to take this new console seriously? 2. What are they going to charge for it? 3. Will people in the US buy more KFC chicken on a regular basis to truly take advantage of the chicken warmer? 4 (2-part question). What if people betray KFC and try to warm El Pollo Loco chicken or Popeye's Chicken or Chick-Fil-A chicken in it instead? Will the console detect the rogue chicken and crash the console with an "Invalid Chicken loaded" error? Out!

I still can't believe a product like this is real.

The easy bake oven was popular though. Can you just imagine the smell? Especially after a few uses and after a few times you forgot to clean it. My god man.

this cannot be real... it's too early for April Fools

Personally I feel KFC could do everyone including themselves a solid by simply focusing on making food that doesn't suck (their pot pie is excluded from this - leave that alone!). Although the idea of it BSOD when one puts something better, like Popeyes or Chickfila, in it amuses me.

The KFConsole is also VR ready and supports ray tracing. Cooler Master also says the KFConsole offers "smooth and fluid high-frame-rate gameplay at up to 240fps for all games, with support for 240Hz output on 4k displays."

But the real game-changer (so to speak) is the KFConsole's Chicken Chamber, where you can place precooked chicken to stay warm while you game.

REAL OR FAKE?

REAL OR FAKE?

This is absolutely ridiculous.

Now I know why CoolerMaster's Quality has gone down in recent years.

This is 100% BS. 240Hz at 4K? They must be smoking more than chicken for me to believe that.

WTH.....

Is KFC super popular in Japan?
KFC in Japan is a whole different animal then they crap we get here. Just check some one like Mike Chen on youtube that does food stuff around the world. All the fast food chains on Asian markets looks leaps and bounds better then what we get in the states.

Yep. I went to McDonalds in Japan and the Big Mac was the best I ever tasted. And it looked just like the pictures, with the perfect bun.

ditto in Vietnam not even remotely close to what we have here...

There was a big KFC in the 1980's just outside of the main gate at Kadena AB that had a life-sized statue of the colonel out in front. It was unbelievable (to me) the large numbers of the local Japanese who would pose for pictures standing next to it. Now, in the modern selfie era, I imagine that it's 5x worse. There was an off-base McDonalds, but I don't remember it being special in any way.

Oddly, the single biggest US food chain on the island was A&W (root beer), with about two dozen drive-in restaurants - about one in every small village and a mega-location in Naha that I have a photo of stashed away somewhere.
In the Philippines, the big US chain was Shakey's Pizza (nasty!)

marketing speak.
I'm sure it can game at 4K*
I'm sure it can game at 240fps**
I'm sure it can output a 4K 240hz video signal***
doesn't say anything about doing all three together so technically it's not lying, but putting words next to each other make them sound more impressive

*at 30fps, medium settings
**at 1080P, low settings
***for 2D content

Their console is mainly a pc mostly

  • Chassis: custom versions of the Cooler Master NC100 chassis
  • CPU: Intel Core i9-9980HK processor as part of the Intel NUC 9 Extreme Compute Element
  • GPU: Asus Dual Mini GeForce RTX graphics card – not sure if it is the current RTX 2070 or an upcoming RTX 30XX model.
  • RAM/Storage: 32GB RAM and twin Seagate BarraCuda 1TB PCIe SSDs

yep, I saw those specs too over at Videocardz

definitely not a 4K 240fps machine

That machine is just foul. They're encouraging gamers to put greasy chicken inside the computer?
That's nasty. and not the good kind of nasty.
At some level I have to think this is all just a huge marketing ploy by the Harman group (owners of KFC amongst others). Everything from paying Lifetime to make a movie (which may be cheaper than running ads over a certain amount of time), to paying some company to make a "chicken console". I mean I know it's 2020, but nothing about it makes sense to anyone with a hint of reason.

Technically Harman is just a franchisee. Yum owns the KFC brand. This is definitely marketing though. I can’t think of anyone who would actually take a KFConsole seriously on anything but an “It’s so different I have to have it” level.

I couldn't find a clip of them actually "flying the ship" but this gets the point across of what I think of when I think of KFC + Gaming:

That's really strange.
You really should expose yourself to japanese culture. This is seriously not even a stretch past mostly normal. I'm not sure its possible to understand as an american without years of study. Like PHD level shit.

I doubt this is going to be an actual product. Just a marketing gimmic. Not doubting they are getting into sponsoring eSports but doubtful this PC would be released. They would have pricing/pre-order info available. Something like this would cost too much to manufacture and not sell if someone assumes it would only be given away to eSports teams.

Also, if you find a Taco-Bell/KFC two-in-one restaurant, they should have a special menu item called the Twister burrito. Its a burrito with two extra crispy chicken strips, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and a unique condiment of pepper-mayo, which is only for the twister.

I enjoy old Japanese culture, but have no interest in J-pop.
