Is a Maximus hero z490 really worth the price tag? Is it worth paying 200$ more than say a msi mpg z490 carbon? What real benefit will come from this extra cost?

An absolutely miserable return process. You'll feel obliged to traverse this miserable excuse for one because of the money you dropped on the board lol

So wait don’t buy it if I haven’t yet right?
What would you suggest because I’ve got i7-10 series 3600mhz 16gb ram 980 pro m.2 blah blah blah I’ve spent a lot of money want to have really good system but I haven’t decided on board yet.

Let's be honest here, ASUS makes amazing boards. I can't comment on why that board is so expensive, but in my experience all electronics can suffer some faults.

That said, ASUS has one of the worst track records for RMAs. Just a thought to keep in mind should you have an issue.

Would you go MSI ACE or Carbon then?
I’m not mentioning godlike because that’s crazy price.
I have experienced the dead on arrival that asus randomly provides that’s for sure. I don’t know gigabyte but a lot of the reviews on Amazon are bad for aorus board line but that all could be related to Amazon some things you should stick to Best Buy. I had a msi mpg gaming plus it was ugly but it got 9700k 3.6 to 5.0 smoothly.

Based on my quick research I would pick the ACE. I don't particularly need onboard video outputs, but it supports more m2 ports.

I was bouncing back and forth between the Maximus xii Hero and the Strix z490-e. I ended up going with the Z490-e. I could not see the bump in price for an extra m.2, a few extra fan/headers and two ethernet ports. They appear to be almost identical, same 14+2 power stage same vrm cooler etc.

Really the next step up that would arguably be an improvement would be the xii Formula.

Generally the other vendors will have the same base specs and the price differances will come down to the parts they use, and whatever flashy features they will hang on the board. You can only really just look for reviews for each of the components you are on the fence about and make comparisons yourself. Of you are lucky there will be a review comparing the two boards you are looking.

I have used Asus for years and have rma'd two mobo's and a GPU and never had an issue. Biggest hitch being a mobo taking a couple weeks for the replacement to get delivered.

That being said like every other manufacturer to include EVGA, sometime they drop the ball and the end user has a bad experience, and like every other product people who are scorned scream the loudest.

I also bought the Z490-E, prices are whacky on anything better.
Coming from a previous Maximus Hero.
