Official PS5 Thread

I am really liking the new controller. It probably the best one I ever used.

Yar, really liking it too. Still in the honeymoon phase with it, so too early to say if it will dethrone the Switch Pro Controller for my top choice but its easily the best Playstation controller.

I absolutely love it. It fits my man hands better than the xbox or dual shock. I think the adaptive triggers add a lot of immersion. I have only played a bit of black ops with it but I was pleased. Sadly my KDR was something like .1, so I had to plug in my keyboard and mouse.

Ill practice with it more after my demons souls obsession is over.

I'm curious about the long-term battery life for the new controllers. I think they drain pretty quickly right now and they're only a week or two old. Some of that = games trying to use the new features just to do it, but the lifespan is still only about 1/2 of a Series X with Eneloops in it.

My very first thought when I loaded up Astro's Playroom was "damn, this is going to KILL the batteries..."

For those curious, there is a coil whine lottery. Video I took of my two PS5 units at the same exact location in Astro’s Playroom:

EDIT: for some reason the YouTube video makes the first console’s coil whine seem a lot quieter than it is. The original video is much closer to reality.

Of all the complaints I saw about the DS4 battery life, I never had an issue with mine except for when TLOU 2 came out and I burned through that 24ish hour game in one weekend. But then I pulled my chair up to my TV to get more immersed and just played with my controller plugged in. Otherwise very rarely do I play a game long enough to kill a controller in one sitting and I always put it on charge while not in use.

Anyways, picked up my PS5 right after work today. Skipped my gym routine to bring it home and get started with it. :D

No issues so far other than initially thinking Astro's Playroom was running at 30 FPS and kinda choppy and was disappointed by that, then I realized my TV wasn't in game mode on the new input and that fixed it completely, heh. The game transfer process from my PS4 and easy and painless as well, though most of the games I wanted was on my external drive. I was a little put off by the slightly larger size of the Dual Sense over the DS4, but I think I'm already used to it.

All is good so far and look forward to playing some of these exclusives I missed in the PS+ collection now. Considering picking up Demon Souls even though I didn't get that into Bloodborne very well, but the bad performance in that game didn't help either.

Any update on when can install additional storage on internal m.2 slot

Currently have PS4 games on external USB

Nope. I'm surprised I haven't seen any youtubers like DF try to put any existing drives in it just to see what happens though. I would be curious at least.

Edit: apparently the current PS5 OS doesn't even try to use the expansion slot yet and tells you to remove the drive.

not sure if I just lucked out or if its because I sit about 10ft away from the console but I hear 0 coil whine or fan noise, both my xsx and ps5 are absolutely silent

Mine, too. My cable box makes more noise most of the time. Both my Xbox One X and PS4 Pro were loud as hell so this is a welcome change.

Probably lucked out to be honest. I had three PS5s and only 1 of the 3 basically had nearly inaudible coil whine. I can only hear it when I’m a few inches away so it’s a non-issue for me since I sit about 8-10 feet away when actually playing. The other two with much louder coil whine I can distinctly hear from over 8 feet away without a problem. Need to turn up the surround sound volume quite a bit to drown it out.

crazy, guess I'm glad I got lucky then lol

Yeah it seems to be a pretty common and unfortunate issue. Seems like the PS5 Reddit mods are trying to sweep it under the rug too because creating any new posts with any mention of coil whine automatically gets deleted.

I can hear it on mine playing Astro only if I put my ear up to the console and it goes away when I back out to the console menu. Definitely can't hear it more than a few feet away though or over the game audio.

Wow, now I'm extremely glad I lucked out with my PS5. No coil whine at all, and I'm extremely sensitive to it. Also my console is literally like 2.5 feet from my left ear, lol.

My ps5 has no coil whine and is silent. The disc drive is stupid loud tho.

Same with me. When I opened my first two PS5 units and heard the obnoxious coil whine I almost didn’t want to play at all. It was extremely distracting and ruined the experience for me.

This third one is golden though. Have to be right next to the console and put your ear up to it to hear a slight buzz. But it’s drowned out by the fan anyway as you can hear from the video. From my normal sitting distance I can’t hear it at all.

Had my first 'crash' yesterday. Valhalla froze and the system rebooted.

Today's firmware update fixed the issue where the PS5 wouldn't charge controllers while in rest mode. Not sure how widespread that was, but my machine was one of the ones that wouldn't.

Nice, mine wouldn't either. Glad they got it sorted.

Anyone notice that the USB port on the front is upside down? Also, another random observation; it doesn't charge my phone nearly as fast (on the USB A port, haven't tried the USB C port yet) as my PS4 Pro does, hah. I sit close enough to my TV/console to plug into it most of the time so sometimes I charge my phone off the console as well.

You notice if after one of the recent system updates charging is faster? I know one dealt with the controllers not charging properly (mine experienced this issue), so I'm curious if its related.

I updated yesterday and just tested it. My phone picks up the PS5 as a "USB charger" instead of an "AC charger", so it will only draw .5A from it instead of ~2A like it does my PS4 Pro. Not a big deal and it may be dependent on the phone as well since my phone has detected certain chargers differently than other phones in my house.

Have you tried the other USB ports? IIRC there is a difference between the back and the front USB ports when plugging in the VR system into the PS5. I think I read that the adapter needs to go to one on the back USB ports of the unit to work properly.

Updated my system and now my controller has no feedback. And...my system completely shut down even though I always select 'rest mode'. I had to manually start the unit and then got a 'repairing' screen and a notice not to unplug the unit while it was running? WTF..it was never unplugged.

Now EVERY time I put the unit in rest mode it shuts down. I have to manually restart it and then it 'rebuilds' and then I get a message warning me that I should not unplug the unit while it is running. WTF. I havent unplugged it!

Seems for right now the only solution is to turn Rest Mode off in the settings.

Do you have external storage connected?

No external storage. Reading around the net it seems the only solution is to never put it in rest mode. My controller still has VERY limited feedback, certainly nothing like when I first starting using it.

Silly they didn't launch with VRR as standard. Such a crucial item this day and age. Also this 32 GBps HDMI 2.1 port limit is very odd, limiting to 4:2:2 chroma at 120 Hz. I mean I basically play only single player games on my PS5 at 4K/60Hz but still seems like they cheaped out.
