Fallout 4

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand the ever present "Lag around Greenetech Genetics" problem rears its ugly head. Again. Trying to find the cause but haven't had much luck at all. Clean & Simple is supposedly one major cause of it but I don't use those mods so that isn't a factor in this playthrough. Removed many other settlement mods I had but still no go. Disabled AI. Nope, didn't change. Damn issue is driving me nuts.

Hi everyone! Just got the GOTY on Steam for $40 CAD. I'm wrapping up my final playthrough of Inquisition, so it will be time for something new.

In terms of "Bethesda-pls, WTF is this buggy mess!?", I played through Morrowind -> Oblivion -> Skyrim, with the last of which means I have an lifetime membership account with Nexus Mods and still (kinda) knows how to use NMM.

On the hardware side, my computer is i7-4770K @ 4.1 -> 4.3GHz + GTX 980 4GB x2 SLI + 27in 1440p 144Hz screen. So, my intention is to skip the HD Texture Pack and then play at 1080p no AA but everything else Ultra. Good idea?

Then, in terms of gameplay, I want to play it as much as a Conventional Shooter as possible. So, my intention is to go No VATS + No Power Armour + only gunpowder weapons. Do you think that is viable? SPECIAL and Perks suggestions? Tips?

In terms of Nexus Mods and related to above, I have already grabbed the No VATS Overhaul and the complementary Critical Hits Outside of VATS. Any others you think will be "must have" before even playing the game for the first time?

Finally, Jo Wyatt as Sarcastic FemHawke in DA2 totally knocked it out of the park for me, and I've been missing that snark throughout Inquisition. From some YouTube videos, Fallout 4 also seems quite good in that regard. If I pick the Sarcastic dialogue response all the way through, will I regret it as being too much? Or not enough? Or just right and totally worth it sticking to it?

Dialogue responses in FO4 matter very little. While there is sometimes a minor consequence to the quest you are on, it is usually pretty obvious, and there is really not a lot of influence on the overall story. It isn't a world where decisions in one place influence the other. The main quest is decided by which faction you back, not really by and specific dialogue choice. So play your character how you want, it doesn't really matter to how things develop. Basically you can view it as a bunch of little mostly-linear separate quests. The dialogue is largely for your immersion and flavour, not really to change much.

The game is still a buggy mess. Its a Gamebryo game after all. I would suggest using this mod, especially if you dont want your framerates to tank into the 20's in the South Boston area.

Also find a good mod to deal with the shadows, the game was coded so poorly that most areas of the game will render shadows of the entire area despite being seen by the player, this also murders your frames. You can try Ultra settings with your rig without the mod above but I don't think you're going to like it without putting some band aids on the game first.

Expect to spend ALOT of time making tweaks in the .ini files while you're playing. Kind of a given from a Bethesda game at this point.

Half of my 400+ hours in the game are probably from modding it so that it would run at good frame rates.

In response to choices. There really aren't any. The game is very linear and doesn't allow you to deviate much from the original path you choose, you can even break the game like I did by choosing a different route in the middle of a main story quest. Which cost me about 20 hours of gameplay, very frustrating.

Good price, in my opinion, for the GOTY Edition

Hi everyone! Just got the GOTY on Steam for $40 CAD. I'm wrapping up my final playthrough of Inquisition, so it will be time for something new.

Get the latest version of NMM. Vortex is in Alpha and needs quit a bit of work before it is actually usable. NMM is going yo be your best bet for modding Fallout 4.

Turn off, or set to low Godrays. I recommend using SSAO for better performance coupled with great image quality.

Here's [H] performance preview for your perusal.

Here is what I do every playthrough on Very Hard or Survival Mode:

1. Refrain from picking up any of the Bobbleheads until you have S.P.E.C.I.A.L. maxxed at 10. It'll be a bit more of a challange in some aspects but when you do pick them up your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. will be at 11 instead of 10 which will give you benefits of increased carry weight over stock, to name one. Same goes with the other Bobbleheads. Wait until the respective perk(s) is/are maxxed before picking up the associated Bobbleheads. Better to get a percentage boost on the entire perk (explosives for one) to give you a bit of an edge than on only part of it.

2. Refrain from picking up any magazines - except the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. book found very early in the game - until the associated perk is maxxed.

3. Do not mod the weapons or armor until the perks are maxxed.

4. Only use found weapons to include quest rewards and Legendaries. Gauss Rifle, to include The Last Minute, is a projectile weapon.

Then, in terms of gameplay, I want to play it as much as a Conventional Shooter as possible. So, my intention is to go No VATS + No Power Armour + only gunpowder weapons. Do you think that is viable? SPECIAL and Perks suggestions? Tips?

Grab the Unnoficial Fallout 4 patch and install prior to starting a new playthrough. I is essential for having a fairly bug free experience.

In terms of Nexus Mods and related to above, I have already grabbed the No VATS Overhaul and the complementary Critical Hits Outside of VATS. Any others you think will be "must have" before even playing the game for the first time?

Sarcastic responses only have an affect on Companions when you are working to reach maximum affinity with them but not all the time. Certain phrases in certain situations withe certain companions may trigger a like or dislike but nothing more that I've experienced in over 4,200 hours of play.

Thanks for this. I usually stay away from Godrays, since I think it was in... Far Cry 3? ...and absolutely murdered GPUs back then without much gain. I thought buying the GOTY would be like the Skyrim Special Edition that would have a lot of the engine modernisations, but looks like I might still need to do some work.

Also thanks for your inputs. I will clarify that I am mostly concerned with the quality of the VAs' deliveries, and also whether or not going Sarcastic all the way through will make my character such a jerk that all the companions will get so PO-ed and abandon him / her :-P

This is what I have been going off:

...and I thought it was pretty good! Basically sold me the game.

Here is where I am coming from, and hoping that this will match or surpass:

Your responses don't change your overall personality like they did in DA2. Each dialogue tree is separate from earlier ones. For companions it isn't what you say so much as what you do. Each one has likes and dislikes (you can look them up, if you wish). Do one of them in their presence and their affection for you will raise or lower. Now some dialogues can cause this, but usually with other people. So like if a companion dislikes greed, and you choose a greedy option in dialogue, that might earn dislike. Mostly though it is actions, like some will like it if you pick locks, or modify weapons, and so on.

If you wanna just do whatever and not worry, there are mods out there to change how affinity works so that you never get any negative affinity.

I have not started yet, but here is what I have installed via NMM for now:

Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch, of course.

Vivid Fallout, otherwise not doing any graphical enhancements yet. Please feel free to point out some of the "must have" mods in this category!

From what I can see, the character creation is already pretty good and I feel fits the environment quite well, so for now I find no need to download mods to "doll up" my main character. So no mods in that category either, but again if anything is "must have" then please chime in!

Beyond that, I am doing the Modern Weapon Replacers:

AK74M to replace the Handmade Rifle.

McMillan CS5 to replace the Hunting Rifle.

FN P90 to replace the Submachine Gun.

Service Rifle to replace the Assault Rifle.

Mk14 EBR to replace the Combat Rifle.

Hunting Shotgun to replace the Combat Shotgun.

Sig Sauer P220 to replace the 10mm Pistol.

Walther P99 to replace the Deliverer.

RSh-12 Assault Revolver to replace the 44 Magnum.

TEC-9 to replace the Pipe Gun.

The rest (Pipe Bolt Action, Pipe Revolver, Double-Barrel Shotgun, Lever-Action, and the various energy weapons) seems lore-friendly enough and / or currently do not have suitable replacements, so I am leaving them alone for now. For example, it is possible to replace the Double-Barrel with the same above Hunting Shotgun, but then you will still only be able to load 2 shells into it... so I feel that I will be better served to stick with vanilla on that one.

For graphics I don't think there really is any must have, unless you don't like the style of the base game. The high rez texture pack Bethesda has is absurdly large, so you don't need to improve on it. Most of the other visual things are if you want to change the aesthetic, not just improve the existing look.

Mods I really like are:
-- A carry weight mod, since I want to pick up EVERYTHING :D
-- Advanced Settlement Turrets, since I find settlements boring and I want to easily have enough defense
-- Armorsmith Expanded, for more armor crafting options
-- Extended Weapon Mods, for more weapon crafting
-- Legendary Modification so you can detach legendary mods from items and attach them to others

The tool LOOT is good for sorting the load order of mods to make sure they are as compatible as possible.

never use weapon replacers, you will be plagged of bugs on scripted scenarios or unique weapons.. with fallout 4 it is always better to add all the weapons you want but don't touch vanilla weapons to avoid break things..

for graphical enhancements, I can't stop of recommend:

NAC + NAI

Regrowth

Grasslands (plus commonwealth connifer redux if you don't like Regrowth)https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/16509/?tab=posts

FAR

FlaconOil retexture

High resolution texture pack - valius

Bonus: Satellite world map

improved vanilla armor and clothing

with those, the experience should be great in fallout 4 without enter in the realm of ENBs... (NAC help a lot with that as you can tweak visuals in real time while ingame)

I know Fallout 4 has been out quite a while, but after searching (apparently Google is not my friend), I can't seem to find an answer.
I've finished the main story long ago, and am now just fooling around.
For some reason (a game update, maybe) I can no longer load the "Turret Override" program.
I know it only works on terminals that have a [H]ard (see what I did there?) connection to the turret, but I can no longer load the holotape on terminals that I previously could.
And yes, at this stage of the game turrets aren't a problem for me- I just like tuning them against the enemy and watching the fun ensue.
Anyone else have this issue?

Thanks!

Alright! After a few false starts (including one that I got all the way to Diamond City), I finally figured out the levelling system and so can settle on a "build". My Sole Survivor will be wielding semi-auto Combat Rifle + semi-auto Pistol, dealing damage via Criticals, and also dabbling with Crafting.

As mentioned before, I am using the No VATS Overhaul and its companion Critical Hits Outside of VATS, so unlike the usual "No VATS" build, I will need Luck as normal.

Here are the starting SPECIAL that I have decided on, and the perks I will be concentrating on in each.

S: 3
Armourer

P: 9 + 1 Bobblehead at Museum of Freedom = 10
Rifleman | Locksmith | Demo Expert | Sniper | Penetrator | Concentrated Fire

E: 1
Toughness

C: 2
Cap Collector | Lady Killer

I: 5
VANS | Medic | Gun Nut | Hacker | Scrapper

A: 1
Gunslinger

L: 7 + 1 Shaun's SPECIAL book = 8
Fortune Finder | Scrounger | Better Criticals | Critical Banker | Grim Reaper's Sprint

To be honest, I really wanted E: 3 for Lifegiver and / or A: 3 for Sneak, but just could not spare the points. So, loud n' proud it shall have to be, while Medic patches my squishy self up....

TheStiggyOne

Out of curiosity, are you aware that, Unlike Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas, S.P.E.C.I.A.L. can go higher than 10?

Yeah I have +28 Strength-+17 Endurance during the day, to just name a few in this build I'm currently working on.
But I blame that on being a lv. 206 and collecting extra bobble heads and mags, perks etc., from + 50 new land and quest mods.

While not being ideal for lower levels, a good way to cap Strength would be to us a PA frame at higher levels. Bugthesda caps it at 11 while wearing PA.

I started playing it again recently...and I hate to have to give money to a mod outfit, but they made the Chinese Stealth Suit avail again. That was my favorite thing ever in Fallout 3. Though, I feel it was nerfed a bit in this one.

Is it any good? I saw it yesterday while I was DLing the Big Daddy Ver. 2 PA.
As long as it doesn't inject 5 stimpacks every 10 sec while in battle, like the MK II one in Old world blues from NV, I'm in! :D

I didn't play NV long enough to get that. So, I can only say, "No. It doesn't." My main issue, is that the "cloak" seems a bit finicky.

Lol the cloak was the whole point of that armor smh, ol' well. Guess I'll just stick to my Deathstroke and Corpus Praesidum armors, thx.

Well, my character is also newish and I haven't maxed out my stealth attributes/skills. So, that could be an issue too. But, I've been slightly disappointed in it.

Well mine are maxed, so I will give it a go tonight and report back on my impressions of the armor.

Has anyone on here migrated from NMM to Vortex, and has imported at least 200 mods yet?
Pros and cons vs. NMM?

From what I can tell, most of the focus has been Fallout 76 but let's not forget Fallout 4 of which many mods are still being developed for. In particular is:

Megaton (Spectacle Island) by Kosuna

Modder is doing a great job of replicating Megaton within Fallout 4. I have not played the mod because I need to get a better laptop in order to run Fallout 4 but as soon as I'm able I'll definitely download and install the mod since it appeals to my interests.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR FALLOUT 4?

We have a wide variety of new creations coming, including a battle to retake Quincy from the Gunners, a high-tech combat rifle and vault suit customization options. We are also adding several workshops, each in a new location.

FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT IN THE CAPITAL WASTELAND

Travel to GNR Plaza in DC to stop an incursion of Commonwealth mercenaries, attracted by an unfortunate call for aid. This is one of our biggest FO4 adventures yet, and includes over eight new armors inspired by FO3.

I'm unsure if this is a new DLC or if a mod author is creating/has created new content. From the way it is worded it seems Bethesda a has created a new DLC.

If you've completed the game a number of times already (I've got 2,500 hrs in so far), loading different mods that expand the storyline/quests. plus different companions. Sim Settlements is great, with the added buildings. You have to be careful of the sizes, it's easy to go over the build limit and start having weird bugs. The Unofficial Patch is a must, and F4SE is required by a lot of mods, but it's easy to get versions out of sync.

Plus, depending on how you roll, Insane Ivy is a real hoot.

Creation Club. Bethesda always refers to CC content as "ours" that "we" are releasing.

Looking for a quarantine game that will last many hours, so this seems like a good candidate. I don't really feel like falling into the endless mod game after dealing with that on Skyrim.

Is the game playable enough with just the GOTY edition and the official HD texture pack? Also, does this game support true HDR on the PC?

I would still recommend going through some "essential mods" lists. There are a few for bugfixing and some content ones I would not miss, like Interesting NPCs.
That being said, the modding scene for FO4 is a lot smaller than Skyrim. It's mostly niche stuff like new guns and skins, not gameplay overhauls or DLC-sized expansions.

It's hard to get lost in endless mods with FO4.

Arioch

One can spend a lot of time in Fallout 4 with all the side quests. Talk to everyone you see and recruit companions to start their side quests.

As far as mods go, without getting too involved, here are the base must-have mods I recommend:

Note: Run Fallout 4 at least once to set the ini files before installing these utilities/mods.

1. Mod Manager: Vortex - Install right after installing Fallout 4. Ensure automatic updates is on as this mod manager is updated frequently.

2. Patch: Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch - Absolute necessity, fixes a lot of bugs in the game.

3. Valdacil's Item Sorting - Time saver if you have a large character inventory.

4. HUD: DEF_UI - Ensure you follow the instructions exactly.

These are the base mods I won't play without. Installs quickly and the results are fantastic. There are a slew of settlement mods but I won't get into those unless asked to.

Let me know if you have any questions. I watch this thread for new replies and help out where I am able.

So a little bump here.

Played FO3 for quite a bit. I got pretty far into it. Then I got hammered CTDs. I couldn't go 5m without it crashing. Sucks, because I was having a decent time with it. What's the story on FO4? I hear mixed things about the game being buggy. I read thing about people asking if the game still has issues, and they get laughed at for "asking a stupid question". So I'm guessing that's still the case? Or do the above patches do a decent job cleaning everything up?

Game is plenty stable to play. I played without any of the fix it patches and never had an issue besides some Bethesda quirks. Apparently the unofficial patches resolves a lot of that.

Hm. Duly noted. Maybe I'll pick it up then. Thanks.
