Assassin's Creed Valhalla

Only real difference is removing the gear drops, which i'm honestly fine with. Although others may hate that, because some folks like the whole item loot aspect.

I don't find leveling is any more challenging here. I'm already way above the recommended levels as I move around England following the main quest stuff.

i find it hard to be motivated to loot crates and locations if there is no gear to be found. Just resources. But that's coming in so slow. It's not in proportion with the level. I'm already twice the power recommended for the quests I'm doing, but only had enough resources to build 3 buildings in the settlement. I already did the raids I could, the rest I see on the map are lvl 150 and 200 and similar outlandish numbers, while I'm on level 50 maybe, and the recommended level for main quests I'm doing is 20. Which means I'm basically one hit killing regular enemies now.

So balance of the game is far from ideal.

The difficulty only affects their durability not their brains. I don't know how can it be this bad, all they needed to do is use the AI from odyssey and it would've been fine.

How is the AI different? With Odyssey I had them bug out and act fairly stupid often. See through things they shouldn't, while other times stand over their buddies corpse without being alerted. I only played on medium (or whatever it is called) though.

Does it seem to take a while to level up to anyone else? Granted, I have only completed the first small island, but in RPGs the first several levels normally come pretty quick.
Main quests level you up super fast.

They are completely nuts now. One of them will attack you while 3 others just stand around doing nothing. Sometimes I walk right past them and they fail to attack me, just go about their business. Their pathfinding is broken, if you go up some ledge or wall, they'll start walking into oblivion, both the friendly and enemy npcs. Once they all climbed on top of a hut for some reason in one quest. This means combat in the game ranges from laughable to frustrating when you have to find all the ones that wandered off. Oh and I forgot to mention they don't even alert each other like in odyssey. You openly attack a camp / fortress, you kill a bunch of enemies the rest will just go about their business like nothing has happened until you go right up in their faces and attack them individually. In odyssey when you were detected the entire camp was up in arms in a minute and coming for you. On top of the reinforcements if you failed to prevent them from lighting the sign. In valhalla there isn't even any reinforcements as during raids enemies spawn from thin air. Which defeats the purpose of reinforcements if soldiers can just be conjured on the spot.

Here is a weird question: With this game only (best I can see)... with multiple controllers via two very different USB slots I get occasional, brief audio drops with this game. Maybe a second or two. I'm mostly convinced there's a connection but not sure. Anything to it or is that just some game bugaboo? When there are no controllers it doesn't happen.

Also: The Raven doesn't permanently mark enemies. Is that something that can be "upgraded" or is the Raven set as is? It's no big deal I was just curious.

Faulty controller, or broken cable on one of them. Or your punishment for blasphemy :p

As far as I can tell the purpose of the raven is just to find the area you are supposed to be searching in, and manually marking pois with markers. Hence you can place multiple markers.

Hmmm i think it could be the cord. Using my PS4 controller with even a USB extension attached to it I have no issues like that.

I turned off vibration and it's gone. I've heard of that feature reacting like that before regardless of controller. Strange. But since it doesn't work for Dualsense now anyways I may as well turn it off.

Interesting.. I'm using an Xbox Series One S controller on USB and am experiencing the audio drop outs also. Mostly in menus and only for half a second or so. Audio also drops out briefly when quick saving for me. Will try disabling vibration to see if audio dropouts still occur.

I have the old school XB360 controller and I haven't had any sound issues.

I think it's a big deal as that's part of the original AC games. That's what had me confused when I started yesterday. WTH is the purpose. I don't even use it right now in the starting area. I wanted to spot enemies like it use to. No treasure marking or wild animal markings either? Get rid of the yellow and blue markers and let the Raven do the findings. Character feels real clunky on fighting and moving in general. This game needs a patch in a big way. The sights are beautiful, but unlike the last two AC's, I am getting pop in, in villages and with Raven. I should have just waited a month for the bug fixes and what not. IMO, not impressed right now. Love Origins, and Odyssey.

I like this more than origins the more I get into it. The more I play the more I’m liking it. It may just be because I find the setting in England during the time frame so interesting though.

I hear you. Get to England. Don't get stuck in Norway.

You can fast travel back whenever you want after you get some things off the ground and start becoming more "assassin" and open up some skills. It helps.

The good news is: They are usually really good about supporting these games and I expect that first patch probably will hit in that timeframe you are hoping for.

I can't get used to the fucking parrying.

Enemies have this crazy super telegraphed animation that's actually so bizarrely slow that I try to block early constantly.

I just use dodge all the time instead. Trying to parry was hit and miss, dodge works all the time, at least until you run out of stamina. But there are a few new enemy types that you can only defeat by parrying as they are untouchable with regular attacks.

aka Goneril.. She be savage.. Titties out n all.

Glad I went the Ubisoft+ route and saved $60. This game bored the shit out of me.

The game does get better later, the story picks up after about 6 hours in. I'm 15 hours in and 20% complete according to uplay. After picking up a few abilities fighting is better too. Like dual wielding heavy weapons.

The AI was never great in Odyssey but they have definitely dropped by double digit IQ points in this one haha. Still enjoying the game even though I would rate Odyssey higher. I would give Valhalla a solid 8.

Same, well we'll see about that 8 after it ends. So far it's more than 1 point behind odyssey and I gave that a 9.

It's definitely not as good, but it has strengths in other areas. The zealot system isn't as entertaining as the champion system in Odyssey. You also have to knock the score down a little for the story just because the entire start portion in Norway was a really bad opening to the game. In Odyssey, the entire thing was awesome from start to finish.

It's also missing the difficulty scaling mode that was patched into Odyssey. I'm sure they'll also patch it in here eventually, but I wish they would have just thrown it in off the bat. Without this mode the game is just way too easy IMO, as you way out-level each zone as you follow the main story quests.

seems like Ubisoft reinvigorated the franchise with Origins and Odyssey but are now falling back into the same Ubisoft open world problems of large but repetitive gameplay...they need another soft reboot with the next game

I wouldn't say there is much wrong with the current trilogy format. It's just lacking the level of polish needed to truly impress people. They keep saying, oh, it'll be Ubisoft's Witcher 3. The problem is that while it could have been like that, it just lacks that polish on release that everyone wants.

That being said, I suspect the next game will be a big leap with the engine technology, and they may change the format a bit. The series generally does things in three's at this point, the only real two outliers being Unity and Syndicate.

They haven't quite nailed the RPG and loot mechanics either. Odyssey was overkill on the loot, but Valhalla is way too sparse. Definitely a step back in terms of loot mechanics.

Yeah, when I was playing I did pick up that dual wield heavy ability - though nothing worked like a flail and a shield for me. I ended up uninstalling the game at about 25 hours. Something about Ubisoft games now bore me pretty fast - though I loved Origins and liked Odyssey despite an anti-climactic end to the story. Just way too much repetition in their titles for me now.

I figured out what is causing the sound pauses. It occurs when switching between keyboard / mouse and controller. If you turn off hybrid mode in the controls the pauses no longer occur. The controller doesn't have a quick save button though. Odyssey had a quick save on the map. Nothing game breaking but it is a minor annoyance.

I should have put resolution scale to 150% for 4k before doing these photos but oh well

I love this third one. It's like concept art from Diablo.

Controller has quick save. You hold down on dpad and hit x.

Is all gear end game gear? Is anything I get early in the game able to be continuously upgraded quality wise to be the same as gear first found later?

Yes, it's mostly just dependent on playstyle. All gear is viable throughout the whole playthrough. However you may not find gear specific to your preferred playstyle until later in the game since all gear is gated behind story progression. This is one area I don't like about the game.

Are there enough resources able to be found to upgrade a lot of gear? Or is it limited and you need to be very selective about what you upgrade?

There's enough to upgrade what you want, because you won't be upgrading stuff that you don't care about.
