Some of us do, but remember that Cyberpung RPG that had a humanity stat that lowered the more body parts you replaced.
Not seeing a downside. I feel like "upload my Brain to a hard drive and live forever" is an attainable goal in my lifetime if we get started soon.

As long as I can download it later into an android or cloned body I am game....

But are alive still at that point? What makes us human and alive? I mean is it you are that point or just a copy? Your body is dead still and something else is living on. I really don't know how to feel about that concept.

I think therefore I am. I am my collection of memories/experiences. My body is nothing more than a meat sack to carry my consciousness around this world.

Are we tho? The analog to digital conversion weirds me out. I just don't feel like it is you anymore once you are uploaded. Anyone or anything can screw with your memories once it is digital. It just feels like you would be missing/losing something I'm the conversion. I don't believe in a soul or afterlife so idk what to think of that process.

I do know how I feel about that concept.
Totally awesome.

I'll worry more about the ethical ramifications when mind transference actually becomes a reality. I don't believe in a soul or the afterlife so this seems like the best way to extend my lifespan beyond my fleshy prison.

In the meantime some of the cyborg enhancements I would like are things like the ability to see ultraviolet light or even just something as simple as having a vital sign monitoring device built into my wrist and powered by my body.

Idc about the ethics of it. You are on your dead bed and close your eyes for the last time. I don't feel like that is YOU that is waking up in the synthetic body. You are still dead. Meh I am just over thinking it and really doesn't matter since it won't happen in our life time.

How do you know an electronic consciousness is you, not a copy of you? If it's a copy, and there were other copies, would you care? Would the other copies care?
In my situation, we'd have been considering this situation for decades and plan on fully embracing it.
There's a reason why Jamie Maddox is my favorite X-Men.

What you do with your body and consciousness after you die is your decision, I want to live forever virtually or in a synthetic body, or probably both - simultaneously.

Not with that attitude.

They've been working on it for a while and I definitely think it'll happen in our lifetime. It won't be perfected, it won't be neat, it won't be nice, but it'll happen.

Well, or you're OK with a copy of you doing so. :) (Sorry, coalescing this with your reply to me; I never liked X-Men much so I don't have a reference for your Jamie Maddox.)

Multiple Man.
Basically he can clone himself and then each of his clones can have a unique experiences and he can re-absorb those clones and gain back their memories.
Sometimes they don't want to be reabsorbed, or turn evil, or fuck his wife, you know, typical X-Men things.
(Madrox, not Maddox, I typo'd up above.)

Ah, thanks. A newer take might be Harem in the Grrl Power comic, although there's only one consciousness there.

Sprogging copies and then reabsorbing them is a different thing, though, from what I was talking about. (You don't have to have the same opinion as me, I was just curious what yours was. I'm of the opinion that a copy of me isn't me. The copy might be OK with that, but I wouldn't appreciate it that much (except I'd probably be dead so I wouldn't care.))

you both need to watch the series "Altered Carbon" ;)

I have.

How do you know an electronic consciousness is you, not a copy of you? If it's a copy, and there were other copies, would you care? Would the other copies care?

The ability to not make copies is solvable. Though if it were up to me I would spin off different "copies" of myself (even now) to perform tasks and then merge to collect those memories.

I do believe we are the summation of our experiences. Our thoughts are what matter. If I can transfer myself to something else what does it matter what happens to this meat sack? Sure its a really nice one but its just meat. It can be replaced. Religion aside what besides your thoughts makes you well you? Why couldn't you be you if we could transfer your thoughts to a new physical meat body? I.E. not make a copy but actually move your memories and thoughts from the meat brain to an electronic equivalent?

I know this is even further out there but would you still be you if you went through a Star Trek style transporter? Where you are broken down and reassembled somewhere else?

I don't think, on a metaphysical level, that's true. For one thing, if you assume (for the moment) the existence of the soul, you're going to have to figure out how to measure it.
Religion aside
That's kind of a big thing to throw away, is all I'm saying. :)

My point is you die and the copy is not YOU. Sure it has all your thoughts and memories but YOU died. It is not like you fall asleep and you wake up in another body. The new body while have all you stuff is now a new existence. YOU are still dead.

That's something I've considered before... I dont think unless we figure out what consciousness/sentience really is to us aside from our physical selves that we can answer it.

Hey, this might be a way I can leave the house safely, but my owner said no :(

Yall are over reacting. Just need to wear an rfid blocking jumpsuit and you're all good. ;)

The scariest part is being on the IT-side of things having to repair these constantly...
I'd imagine that there would be some sort of USB (equivalent) port built in.
Or It will all be powered by WiFi or phone wireless (equivalent). Repair would be more similar to tattoo or a flu shot than surgery.

At least for the most basic devices. Once you start actually replacing body parts it gets a bit more complicated.

..it's all fun and games until the latest firmware update gives the user stroke like symptoms ..

part of my current job is testing the firmware with the OS...lets just say the last update has issues ;)
as in catastrophic hang the OS type of issues
