Asking 9900K owners

Who's seeing AMD owners drop in the new processors on their motherboards feeling sour about it? I wish I could drop in a 10900K. :(
 
Yep super lame as always but that's intel's style. I'm moving to AMD so need a new mobo anyway lol

Try dropping one in a b360 board and see how you fare, while AMD "supports" their socket for a long time, the old motherboards are useles for the new CPU's, you need a 500 series mobo atm to use them, with some luck early next year a 400 series might get an updated bios to use them too without all the nice new features like PCIe4.0.

If you had a 8600 you could pop in an 9900k in the same motherboad, the same as AMD currently works
 
If you have a 9900K and want to upgrade, it doesn't matter. You'd need either an AM4 or LGA1200 motherboard to upgrade. Existing X570 owners can upgrade as soon as they can find the CPU they want in stock. However, X470 owners will probably have to wait until Q1 of 2021 for UEFI BIOS support to arrive for their motherboards.
 
This was a big reason why my latest build was based on AMD (Zen2 + x570 board). I would have _liked_ to go Intel, but with the limited upgrade path and security holes, going red made much more sense right now. I won't be upgrading until probably mid-2021, but it is nice to know that it will be there waiting for me to just drop in a new processor (and probably RAM at the same time).
 
There's not really a big difference between a 9900K and 5800X no?
 
I almost never upgrade my CPU alone. I figure if I am going to go through the work of a cpu upgrade, might as well do the motherboard as well. Motherboards hold value surprisingly well. Actually managed to sell my last one (Asus IX Hero) for $300 making money on it.
 
Nah doesnt bother me. Every platform comes to an end. My 9900 rig has treated me very well. I generally build when im bored or my interest is tweaked. The latter this time around. AMD finally has Intel beat in gaming procs and i want one!
Annnd im out of back up rigs. I sold off all but my retro rig and my main rig(9900kf). So yeah, i need to build something and it may as well be a badass gamer or whats the point? Was planning a 3080/5900 rig but we see how thats turning out. Im not going to spend days or weeks or months trying to luck my way into a cpu and gpu. Dont really need another rig and i could wait for ddr5 blah blah but thats a long boring year or more away. So fuck it. Im updating my powertool collection and will be finishing off the old ladies honey do list.
Porter Cable and Dewalt are more than happy to take my money!
Ill revisit a new build this spring if i dont run out of shit to keep me occupied this winter.
If i happen upon a 5900 and something gpu in the meantime, well all the better hehe.

Stock or overclocked , 3200mhz or faster ram . . . a tweaked out 9900k will still be faster more of the time including desktop , but will use more power be hotter and not have pci 4 no big points but just points , but definitely not a upgrade if that's what you asking. the 5900x is another story
 
Nope, not sour, platform works, stable no issues.

Meanwhile,
10900k has latency issues
With AMD 5xxx: MSI reports overvolting, Asrock unstable AGESA, Gigabyte potential boot issues (not sure if these are resolved), Asus issues with peripherals

Not at all, the 9900k@5 ghz is still a beast in games and matches both the 5900k/10900k in games at that clock.
 
I would say come to the Red side, but the AM4 socket is supposedly end of life. Might as well wait for AM5/Ryzen 6000 series ( or 7000 whatever), or you be in another Intel like situation.

It is a no brainer. Go to the side that has supported a socket since 2016. However, I would not recommend making the jump this year since it's supposed to be the end of AM4.

But if you want to break it down into performances, games, benchmarks, tools blah blah blah... That is a whole different conversation and not what my post is about.

I have a 9900k, there is no compelling reason (in the software I run) to go for a different processor at this time.

Makes perfect sense. I think most responses in this thread share your view, hell so do I. Jumping from either side for 1-2 FPS, 3 seconds off a blender render, or to save 30w of power is asinine.
 
i sold my 9900k build to go to zen 3 , but it's not much a difference in games unless you play cs go. I'm sort of regretting it at this point cause i'm going to be stuck with this 3600x for awhile now. This msi bios for the x570 board is trash also; on my gene I could easily boot into the bios if my memory overclock wouldn't post, on this board I have to reset bios and type everything in from scratch.

Should have waited for rocket lake.
 
I would probably switch over if I didn't value my 9900k at the same price as the 5600k, it may have better performance due to the extra cores but I bought it because it was the best thing out there at the time (and right before zen 2 came out). I'm not really interested in what amounts to a lateral move (and some ways worse performer), about the only benefit I would get would be pcie 4.0 which amounts to a minuscule fps loss for when/if I can get a 3080.

By the time I'm ready to upgrade again, I'm optimistic Intel will be competitive again with a 7 or 10nm chip, or AMD will be smashing even harder.
 
I'm a different scenario, I sit on a 8600K and see 9900K as a very compelling upgrade atm, at first I was thinking going AMD but the more I think about it seeing the dropped pricing on 9900K (might go KF as it's actually like $30 cheaper) Here the 9900KF wasn't long ago costing like 539€, currently the lowest price here is 376€ (when do you see pricedrops from Intel like that? Yea never), very tempting. That along another kit of G.Skill DDR4-3200 CL14 16GB which is really cheap atm as well for total of 32GB. I think that should be holding up well until future DDR5 setup becomes viable.

Thats still high from what im seeing, I saw the 9900k on sale new for like $320 usd online, and $299 at microcenter in store.
If you really want to upgrade I'd wait and see if there are any holiday specials.

Yea I do plan to wait for BF but 376€ that's with 24% VAT so still good price, doubt it will drop a lot for BF, maybe 349€ I'm guessing.
 
This really does not matter much to normal users. The gains from one CPU generation to next are fairly minimal these days. For me my last system (4c haswell) lasted over 5 years. The only reason I upgraded to 9900k+new mobo is that my old one was starting to fail.

By the time you have a meaningful upgrade it means new DDR standard, new PCIE and hence new MOBO anyway. There is no reason to hold back new designs by keeping around old sockets.

The same thing is coming to GPUs now that they are running smack against power wall. The days of meaningful upgrades from one gen to next are coming to an end on GPU side as well.
