Star Wars: Squadrons

My niece wanted to watch me play today so I booted it up and hopped in a single player mission. About half way through an overly long mission she looks at me and asks "All you do is float around and shoot space flies? That looks pretty boring."

She's 6 and she wasn't wrong.

I played for a couple of SP missions. Still trying to get the controls adjusted, but so far I am not impressed. Flying the basic Tie around is like what someone said above, "driving a dump truck". I cannot fathom why it has such low maneuverability especially when rolling.

I'll probably burn through the SP campaign and call it a day. I am guessing it will barely be worth the EA Play subscription.

Yeah, all the ships feel overly sluggish. The fact turning is basically done by Yaw rather then Roll + Pull is about as big a warning sign as you can get.

I'm also worried the MP playerbase won't be there either. I suspect the game will die a fairly quick death.

I switched my joystick to roll + pitch from yaw + pitch. Now things fly like they should. Put the yaw into the joystick twist action where the rudder controls are usually.

Ea prob paid him off lol

I understood the desire to express cynicism, but seriously... Have we reached the point where people can't genuinely like different things? I mean, even Daikatana and Battlecruiser 3000 AD had their fans and I would not put this game in the same category as those.

I hope they xhange their mind on no more content. They need to do a massive SP DLC. Charge another 30 bucjs for it. I bet it sells lime hit cakes.

It sounds like they could do a lot for those that prefer single player.

already on sale it appears....have it free with EA Pass, havent touched it yet.

I haven't even read or look at any reviews but is the game a lot like the online co-op mode for Battlefront 2? I'm waiting for Thanksgiving to see if it drops to 19.99 to pick two copies up :bored:

I like it a lot. The campaign gets better as you go and multiplayer fleet battles are fun. It is a good game to have in the rotation.

I'm playing the campaign on ACE with HUD disabled, HOTAS & VR and it's a blast now that they fixed the frame pacing issue. The immersive Star Wars flight sim experience I was hoping for. And I still enjoy some multiplayer here and there of course (but HUD needed to compete with the better players there :p ).

Very different from Battlefront 2. I thought Battlefront 2 nailed it. This is good as well, but this is more of a love letter to the X-Wing series than a real effort to up the anty from Battlefront 2.

The graphics are a significant step down from Battlefront.

So if one wanted to VR this one the semi cheap...how would one do it?

Economical hotas also?

the game is already 40% off?...it's been out less then 2 months...is the game that bad?

Just picked this up during the Steam Black Friday Sale for $23.99. What is a good Hotas to pick up for this game and for Star Citizen? Don't think my old Microsoft Sidewinder 2 Pro that I used for Xwing Alliance is going to work. It didn't for Starcitizen. Not sure I want to spend the money on a Warthog is there a good middleground?

Maybe Saitek x52 (or a different number) or Thrustmaster T 16000 (a lot better and more durable). This isn't a full on simulation though, a simple joystick or gamepad works too. Heck even mouse & keyboard is competitive.

Your Sidewinder 2 Pro should work perfectly fine. I have the Sidewinder 2 Force Feedback Pro, and it works fine as well. No force feedback, but otherwise fine.

The best players, the ones topping the charts and the ones who were already holding their own events are using KBM because of quicker aiming. It really depends on what you want to do.

If you want to play private matches or want to be a try hard/compete: KBM high refresh monitor.

If you want full immersion in MP or just want single player: flightstick/HOTAS VR headset.

It's arcadey, but it's not that twitchy mostly. Even a controller and a big screen TV from the couch won't be all that bad.

It also depends on what you are going to play as. For some things (bombers, support craft) you aren't turning that fast to start with so a controller flightstick/hotas is going to be the same as a KBM. You also aren't going to be going after fast targets. On the other hand if you're flying interceptors and constantly pulling drifts of all types it's just NOT going to be quick enough in those sorts of dog fights. The fleet mode is a lot more balanced among the various craft for obvious reasons so bullshit interceptor shenanigans are a lot less prevalent and you can play something that's not "weasles on acid and meth" type and still do fine. If you go in dog fight though you're going to need to be quick or be dead, probably both regardless.

mvmiller12 Thank you. Maybe my Sidewinder broke? Windows 10 doesn't seem to see it.

SOAREVERSOR I got used to playing with Joystick for Xwing, Tie Fighter and Xwing Alliance. The mouse just felt weird and you had to keep picking up the mouse with the old games which was odd. I bought a VKB Gladiator NXT on the Black Friday Sale. Will try playing with mouse and keyboard next time my friends play.

Interested in playing the Tie Defender and Bwing when they add them.

The thing to keep in mind is this is not a SIM, it's an arcade shooter with some SIM elements to it (power management, shield direction switching, ship customization). That said it can be incredible immersive, for single player or fleet battles VS AI VR + Stick is the way to go. And again, for slower moving ships (bombers) your control choices aren't going to matter.

The issue crops up that in dog fights (not just the mode but when they happen in fleet battles) it can turn twitchy fast. Both the a-wing and the interceptor can run rings around the other ships, and stay completely out of their ability to actually turn and hit them, and that's not even counting drifting tricks at which point there is no actual way to draw a bead on them. And their guns are made to sort of twitch onto someone and then spam out all the ammo they have and get the fuck out fast. Even more hilariously the current meta for builds is an interceptor with double missile builds that are quick lock and extreme homing (so you're going to get hit with multi rockets and anti fighter rockets) in the quick spam session. Or the a-wing stealth build that combines a hull that cannot be targeted at range, a shield that makes it take longer to target you, a sensor jammer that makes all missiles and lock break instantly and you can't be targeted, and then a targeting jammer that does the same thing and also vanishes you pretty much. You can see where twitch mouse comes in here.

I've tried stick, controller, and kbm and while there all valid for bombers/support you can rapidly build yourself into a twitch build and get stuck with KBM.

Am I the only one that just never gets tired of slamming capital ships with bomber beam weapons and the goliath missile? I don’t care if I am not doing any damage, when that goliath detonates I yell “huzzah!”

I think the raider and corvette ai ships could use more armor. They are a little too easy to take down.

The beam weapon does massive damage, the goliath does almost none. It's made for a big area burst for fighters, you need ion/proton torpedos really.

The raider and corvette are supposed to be easy to take down to keep the defenders from getting steam rolled.

Nice to know weeks after launch they haven't figured out how to make a targetting system. I can't see what is so hard about it, there are what, 4 enemy players on a map at a given time? 4 possible targets? Why is it so hard for the game to detect something right in front of you?

Ace Combat games have been getting it right for decades, and they can have dozens of targets within range at the same time yet manage to make locking sensible. Point nose, click lock button, prioritize targets closest to nose direction and range. You can cycle through a dozen in 6 seconds. This game you'll mash away at the lock button and the game fails to lock a single lockable target within a few miles for 5-10 clicks.

Pathetic, shit tier game.
