Netflix raises prices on standard and premium plans

Still worth it, cheaper that TV from any provider for 50 channels of crap for $30 a month here in Canada. I find NetFlix foreign shows (got to use subs) are 1000x better than their north american shows these days.

They need to get more money to make one season shows. I wish some of their shows went else where.

I am digging Hulu now after the UI change.

Honestly seems to be less and less value over time but with prices that keep going up and up. Might have to reconsider.

Doesn't work when using the build in app on your TV.
Don't use those? Lots of my TVs are "Smart" TV's but I laugh at this idea and stick a PC to it. The Zotac Zbox are plentiful on Ebay and anywhere from $40 to $70 depending on specs. They range from an Intel Celeron to an AMD Jaguar like CPU. I'm actually working on one for a friend to stick onto his TV, with Linux Mint 20 installed. Ad free YouTube is the least of its capabilities.

this is silly. Content output dropped from the rona so the move is to charge more? I will say the latest chess series/ barbarians / evil has been great. but it doesnt make up for the months lul we had and justification for price increase. This meme is getting more accurate every day:

There is enough free content out there that piracy is also obsolete.
Piracy is for kids with stingy parents. Let's keep on the proper path.

Quit Netflix, activate your adblock, and enjoy free stuff on blockchain hosted video platforms, and the popular platforms too. Pay if you want it. Don't pay if you don't want it.

I canceled about six months ago - don't miss it. Netfix got too 'woke' for me about a year ago and since then they're just doubled and tripled down. The whole getting rid of viewer show ratings to protect Amy Schumer's horrible unfunny 'comedy' specials was really just the start of their downhill plunge. Now, they're going to defend Cuties right up to the end, no matter how many subscribers it costs them.
/the Netflix stockholders need to get seriously pissed and purge out the entire board fast, if losing subscribers and money is ok, just to make a social statement that nothing's inherently wrong with pedophilia

When it comes to good content, nothing beats a well written book.
You uhh, are aware that Netflix costs less than a single "well written book" (hardcover at launch anyway.)

Likewise, you don't have to choose. I've watched 3+ netflix series this month and also read three novels. Netflix, in theory, was actually *cheaper* than my books.

I like media in all of its forms. Netflix has shows that I want to watch. There are books that I want to read, there are games that I want to play over multiple consoles, movie theaters... essentially stopped existing.

(Yes, yes, I know I could have gotten the books from the library, and two of the books were rereads from our in house library, even though I previously never read one of them before, and likewise none of the books I read this month actually came out this month so i'd be having to compare to second hand prices and I could have stolen them just as easily as I could have stolen the netflix series and blah-blah-blah.)

I'm old enough to remember when cable was introduced. Yeah, it cost a monthly fee, but it was ad-free. Pick your channels and just enjoy the content.

Now? Well, years ago I cut the cable due to the bundling and ads. Nothing like 13 minutes of commercials every 30 minutes...and I pay for that. And the surcharge to add 280 channels so I could get the ONE I wanted? See ya.

Hulu...they suck. They bombard me with crap. If you pay extra for ad-free, that does not mean squat. Most of the content still has ads and you cannot fast-forward past them. (In fact, you can try, but it'll reset you back before the commercial. Kinda like saves in Dying Light. And just as fun. Not.)

Netflix: they bombard me with their left-wing political bias. I'm pretty tolerant, but I'm getting sick and tired of all the SJW content, the kiddie porn, the extra fees, and the rest of their crap.

Nothing like ruining a good business model.

What the heck are you going on about?

Aww come on, at least show the version with music if you're going to nostalgia bomb!

....also, for your bonus viewing pleasure, the long version of the lewd-ish animation (made by Fred Perry; there are uncensored versions but this is one I've found on youtube repuploaded; sadly the original creator took it down concerned about COPPA last year.) that is the more infamous cousin of the "LOL, Limewire" version. Note the Clover on the hats - this was back in the days when imageboard gloriousness created the vast majority of memes as opposed to serious political pol-yps. Link, because the embedded version seems to show "video not available"

Edit: For those unaware, the song originally came from a kids show and is completely divorced from any of the animations, memes, or covers (there's a cover by pirate metal band Alestorm that's really quite well done. In my younger days I used it for some of my installers and modified for cracktros). The kid's show, "Lazy Town" was known for its catchy songs and...lets say some not-entirely-well-thought-out-for-the-upcoming-Internet-age poses and camera angles , that made it a common source of memes. This has been your Internet Meme History Minute.

That said, Netflix still has the most content out there and I have to give them some credit for being the first one to really invest in their own originals. I don't like that they're raising the cost, but the whole bloody streaming ecosystem is flailing now and they're being pushed by content owners/creators, pulling their content. Back in the day, all you needed was Netflix and maybe one or two others (Amazon Prime video was a nice addon for those and "free" for those who had Prime anyway), but now everyone is starting their own streaming service and pulling their content from all the others. Its frustrating that almost every platform has at least one or two shows I'd like to watch, but there's really no way that I can subscribe to them all for a discount, either. This is to say nothing for the way they use big data and user viewed content, privacy implications and more.

Ultimately, this has driven me back to YARR HARR FIDDLE DEE DEE again more vehemently (not that I ever actually stopped, but for a time it was less..necessary). Thankfully I get the Netflix top tier version included for free in my T-mobile account so it won't bother me, but stil I lament watching streaming continue to fragment and become more "cable-like" than ever. I'll try to support some of the better ones (including Netflix for the moment) and I actually am not in opposition to having a full on IPTV subscription too, but its just gotten kind of crazy.

Hulu is horrible. Even with the new UI change.
Hulu embraces Hillary. Taco saw it on youtube during an ad. She was portrayed like she was some hero or martyr. 😡 it's worse than horrible! Agenda!!!!!

Except that I can ignore that and watch what I want. They are not pushing their agenda in my face, it does not even pop up in my feed, unlike Netflix, where avoiding and ignoring it became impossible, besides the fact that they had mostly garbage by the end.

Netflix pricing is still reasonable even with the price increase.
Plus they have tons of great in-house content.

eh their stock situation is not really reflecting that. look how it significantly dropped when they pulled the move. ino its stocks but i think it shows something.

NO MORE WTB RTX 3000 Series Threads!

That is all.

Yep I remember when I was a kid my Mother paid extra for the Disney channel for me and my Sister to watch but it had no commercials like they do now. I have Charter Communications (AKA Spectrum) I wanted one channel but I had to get the "Gold" package for the one I wanted that was an extra $12 I could not just get the one I actually wanted but 29 more then the only 1 I am actually interested in.

They didn't tell me. Maybe this is US only?

Streaming platforms... once our saviour and alternative to piracy.

Now cable TV wars 2.0 and everyone spinning up their own platforms and pulling content from others.

There is enough free content out there that piracy is also obsolete.
Piracy is for kids with stingy parents. Let's keep on the proper path.
The point behind piracy is to teach content providers a lesson and to compete with it. Competition usually brings better products and prices, but as we can see with the current streaming service providers, that isn't happening. It was fine when it was just Netflix, but now you have Hulu, HBO, Disney+, and the list goes on. Most of these streaming services are full of crap but have this one or three shows or movies worth watching. We're basically right back to cable.

As much as you think you have a choice, you really don't. This legal monopoly that we call copyright prevents other streaming services from providing the same content but cheaper and better. There are still some devices where I can't install Netflix onto because it's a Chinese made off brand tablet. There is no effort from Netflix to fix this. This also goes for Disney+ and HBO. You know what does work on every device? Piracy!

Remember that piracy is responsible for why Streaming services exist, because that was what they needed to do to compete with it. Otherwise we'd be paying $60 for a Blu-Ray movie, and $600 for the machine to play it, like in 2006. Blu-Ray was clearly superior and it clearly failed to the cheaper and lower image quality of NetFlix. Not only was Netflix profitable but it helped create the many other streaming services that exist today. So the proper path is to pirate. If Netflix and other streaming services want to compete then they better offer cheaper prices and better content.

A good spoof by RLM of all the new streaming services, queued at 8m30s (whole thing is good). I'm gonna sign up for FX+++++ and Warner Archive.

No, the point of piracy is to get shit for free.
I pay for a netflix subscription and still torrrent netflix shows because it's more convenient and versatile.
Who wants to pirate to get shit for free is not a potential / lost customer, so they are irrelevant.

Also since there is steam and other digital distribution platforms I Have not pirated a single game. I explicitly declared in numerous threads that I'm not interested in free game giveaways. Yeah I just want free shit, LOL. No, I want convenient and good service. 12 different shitty apps for 12 different streaming platforms is not good service.

So maybe you can pull your head from under the sand and notice that there is a service issue, when there are dozens of "competing" services, that you need to subscribe to all at the same time to get your favorite shows. Sg, that only needed one subscription on cable. So in a way streaming is now worse than cable. Especially since cable here now offers steraming as an alternative. I can stream almost everything for a week after it aired with my cable subscription.

Piracy is 100% about convenience.
I enjoy and consume Media. There's a reason I have 40TB of Plex media as well as pay for Netflix, Hulu, etc.
It's honestly more convenient for me to spend the $18 a month because of the sheer amount of shows on Netflix that I want to watch than it is to download them all. Especially because I'm trying to transition all of my media to 4k.

I stopped pirating games years ago, and most of what I download right now are things that are hard to get on streaming services, or shows that I don't want an entire streaming service for one show. (Such as Warrior, which is fucking awesome.)
Or for media that is leaving a convenient service and I want a backup of.

Meh, I'm a filthy pirate so they can jack the price up all they want.

Yo ho yo ho, a pirates life I lead,
Sailing across the digital seas,
Pirating all that I can see,
Wondering what that can be,
Let me take it so I can see,
Yo ho yo ho, a pirates I lead.......

Keep your filthy subscription fees,
For the shows that I want to see,
Not paying your increasing fees,
For the shows I don't want to see,
Yo ho yo ho, a pirates life I lead......

Yo Ho brother!

No, the point of piracy is to get shit for free.
The point of piracy is to think you have some inherent right to digital entertainment at a price point and usage style that you want, and that the creator of that digital entertainment has no say over how their product should be priced/used. Now more often than not that price point is "free", but there are people who think that if TV costs too much they'll "fight back" by getting it for free thinking it sends a message. Or perhaps they think they should be able to have a movie in a file format to watch anywhere so they don't need to chew threw data or something.

But yeah ultimately piracy is telling the owner and/or creator of digital content that they have no say.

When I was a broke college student I pirated, but now id much rather purchase physical media. Sadly many of these streaming originals never release on bluray. I'd still wouldn't pirate as I now find it to be morally reprehensible considering I have the means to buy it legitimately.

Piracy is not a convenient way of getting content, and yet often it is. I think Netflix now changed it that only 2 logins can access content if you pay the $14 monthly fee. Four if you pay $18 a month. Only one if you pay the $9 monthly fee. That's just NetFlix, and not including other streaming services.

So maybe you can pull your head from under the sand and notice that there is a service issue, when there are dozens of "competing" services, that you need to subscribe to all at the same time to get your favorite shows. What people are starting to do is pay for one streaming service and pirate the rest. Which streaming service depends on the person, but it's usually NetFlix.

No, the point of piracy is to get shit for free.

For the vast majority of the first world population (those with disposable income to purchase in the first place) the point of piracy is to access content, the cost of it is relatively irrelevant. There is a percentage of people who pirate anyway, they will never be customers and thus nothing is really lost (particularly in digital where physical product doesn't even move) other than the hurt feelings and aggressive bean counters bottom line.

Netflix a decade ago is a testimate to how untrue your statement is.

The fracturing of the digital distribution model makes it harder to get content, for example I want to watch the Mandalorian, but I have no interest in the Disney catalogue at large. So do I pay for the entirety of Disney's service just to watch one show, adding and removing accounts as something is released on a distribution system, or do I just give up and pirate?

Streaming platforms... once our saviour and alternative to piracy.

Youtube showed people will watch endless digital entertainment. Netflix showed a successful business model to capitalize on it. Became a mega corp and now everyone had to copy it. Not that surprising as all industries do that.

I'm happy to say I don't subscribe to or use a single streaming platform.

Piracy is not a convenient way of getting content, and yet often it is. .
It is convenient. I go on a list click on what I want, and 10 minutes later I Can watch it on any TV in my house, without using third party app. For example netflix only works on smart tvs and the app ranges from complete garbage to mediocre depending on the make model and year of manufacturing.

the third option that a lot of people forget about is “don’t watch it.”

sorry you want it but don’t feel like paying for it, but don’t use that to justify pirating it like it’s okay.

While you have some good points that video is such fucking bullshit, filled with half-truths and a total lack of understanding of the industry. It is a REALLY bad video to use as part of your point.

I will say though: Why do people keep assuming that you have to use every service all the time? The fragmentation sucks, but we need to stop comparing it to cable. Cable is all-or-nothing. Outside of premium channels you don't get to pick and choose what to watch or what you get. This is not the case with streaming services. You don't need to be subscribed to all of them all the time. Watch what you want, cancel, move on. Hell, use free trials to watch stuff over the course of month and make sure to cancel the moment you subscribe (so you don't forget to do so later on). It's inconvenient, but still a fuck load better than cable.

The whole getting rid of viewer show ratings to protect Amy Schumer's horrible unfunny 'comedy' specials was really just the start of their downhill plunge.
I never found the ratings all that useful to begin with. If I remember right, they didn't show the actual rating, just an adjusted rating based on what they thought you might like.

Online ratings are suspect now anyway because it's pretty common for political groups to mobilize armies of "downvote trolls" and tank the rating of anything that might offend their political sensibilities. I remember before First Man released, its audience scores were crazy low, because a bunch of snowflakes who hadn't even seen it decided it was bad. Their reason? It didn't show the American flag being planted on the moon.

I watched a few minutes of Amy Schumer's special and it was crap. But I'd rather see no ratings than bunk ones.
