Hi all,
I have an Acer Nitro XV273K 4K display HDR400 monitor 144Hz.

At 4K at 120Hz monitor should run at 4:2:2 and suffer of chrome subsampling.
At 4K 60Hz monitor should run at 4:4:4

Why I can't tell the difference with this test image in the two modes?

chroma-444.png

everyone says that this image should look different in 4:2:2 but on my monitor is exactly the same.

is it because on
4K 120Hz HDR windows is using 8bit+frc
while on
4K 60Hz HDR is using 10 bit?

sincerely I am trying various test image, can't tell the difference between 4:4:4 and 4:2:2

4:4:4 vs 4:2:2 should show a difference on the bottom two rows especially. The red and blue background text will be blurry.

Make sure you are not scaling the image but viewing it at 1:1 size.

scaling is set at 100% during the test but I still can't tell the difference.

Looking at TFTCentral review it seems that 4K 120 Hz 8-bit should be fine without chroma subsampling while 4K 120 Hz 10-bit requires it and finally 4K 144 Hz requires 2x DP connection but disables Freesync/G-Sync.

thank you found the answer to the question.
now the question is...

is it better to run the monitor at
4:2:2 10 bit or
4:4:4 8bit + FRC?

It's completely up to your personal preference, what looks better to you. In games, you will probablt never notice you are seeing 4.2.2. If none of your content is effected, it won't matter much.

ok thanks, so why people complained so much in past about chroma subsampling if 8bit + FRC is so good?
4:4:4 vs 4:2:2 won't really matter much in games. It's desktop use where it becomes more of a problem and even then 4:2:2 isn't horrible like 4:2:0 is.
