Big Navi is coming

I'm at the 1080 non Ti still, games that I play are playing decently so I'm kind of pumped for all of these options.
Im in the same boat brother, also using a 1080 non TI and holding out until end of october.

Well, if the 6900XT does challenge the 3080 that will only push Nvidia put out the 20GB 3080 that much faster.

The problem is actually getting one. lol

You mean announce, and give 20 to scalpers?

I believe this is roughly the performance between a 2080 Ti and 3080. Closer to a 3080 than a 2080 Ti.

I can’t wait to see everyone shocked that big Navi and Ryzen 3 is sold out for months. I wonder what conspiracy theories we’ll get for that.

I'd be pleasantly surprised, but this reeks of the planted charts that were going around for a month before Vega release that showed them +20% faster than they turned out to be. Even the chart font, legend and styling looks achingly similar.
It is a fake due to having both 3070 Super and 3070 Ti.

I was able to buy a 3700X on launch day no problem. The GPU's seem to be harder to get but we don't really know. There will be stock for next month which is the start of the holiday shopping season. People are just impatient.

That can be anything. Doesn’t necessarily mean it’s biggest Navi.
Could be, could also not be. Not sure why AMD would show off a weaker card at a time where people are scrambling to buy their competitor’s products. What benefit would there be to preview a weaker product? I imagined if they did they would’ve previewed it and then said, “and that’s not even our best GPU” or something along those lines. That would’ve significantly spiked interest.

AMD teased good 4k performance. They have a good product and will be competitive with Nvidia. This is why Nvidia was so aggressive with their pricing at launch. I think they are hold back stock possibly or trying to build up stock so when AMD releases their new GPU's on OCT 22nd it will try to steal their thunder.

Oh I’m not arguing that what they had shown isn’t good. Even if that card they previewed is around 90% of the performance of the 3080 then that is a good, competitive card as long as it is priced appropriately. If it’s the same price as the 3080 then that will be a tougher sell.

That's not a bright move. They should want to sell as many cards now before Navi comes. Those who bought now won't be buying later. But to wait for their competitor to arrive before releasing more stock...

On teases you want to show off the least amount of performance you can that will prevent customers from buying a competing product. Reveal too much way before launch and you give your competitors more time to respond/plan how to price to beat you.

Plus, most average people CAN'T actually buy a 3080 right now. I've been trying for a long time now. If the stock situation were better a bigger tease would be needed like you mention to keep people from buying. But I would guess no matter what AMD says every card is going to fly off the shelves especially since people can scalp them for double (MSI itself got into the eBay scalping game through a subsidary). I personally think that lowering expectations then positively surprising people will be a more effective marketing strategy since there's little chance a vague statement will stop people from buying 3000 series cards when even sneaker scalpers and AIBs are getting into the 3080 reselling game.

I don’t recall the last time a company previewed something that wasn’t their top performer without saying that it wasn’t their top product. Do you have an example?

Nvidia is already well aware of AMD’s Big Navi performance. It is rare that a competitor doesn’t have insider knowledge of your product, won’t be the specifics but a general understanding. Nvidia likely already reacted by pricing the 3080 lower than it was initially planned. I also wouldn’t be surprised if they clocked it higher to make it more competitive; the OC headroom is almost nonexistent on most 3080s.

And I am well aware of the stock situation. But for the next 20 days until the reveal there will still be probably 2-3 thousand 3080s sold worldwide. Those are lost customers to AMD’s potential product on top of the already 7-8K customers that have already purchased Ampere.

Yeah "Those who bought now" what is that like couple hundred people have these cards? AMD probably built up stock for their intiial release Nvidia didn't for whatever reason. People are who didn't buy will win in November

Huh? Did you forget you suggested that Nvidia didn't supply the market to wait for AMD?

It always helps to set expectations lower than overdeliver. Yes, competitors often have a general idea but keeping them even a little in the dark is valuable. Why do you think NVIDIA worked so hard to keep the exact performance levels secret going so far as to hold out the drivers from the manufacturers. Why do you think NVIDIA pushed back their 3070 launch/embargo one day after the Radeon event even though we know the general ballpark (like a 2080 Ti according to Nvidia)? You don't lead with your best performance or best price or risk having to make unwanted changes when your competitor responds... remember the whole AMD jebaited thing? Remember that last minute BIOS update on the 5600XT to try to pump up the performance?

As to whether AMD learned its lessons from overpromising and underdelivering on launches like the VEGA 56/64 and Radeon VII remains to be seen. You could be right and AMD is previewing their best product and slightly less than a 3080 is all they have and what they revealed today is as good as its gong to get. I just feel that would be a bad marketing strategy to allow the top performance to come out before your real announcement. NVIDIA went to insane lengths (causing driver crashing issues) to keep the expectations/rumors close to 10-15% faster than a 2080 Ti at the same price and then people were deliriously happy (maybe a bit too much so) when it turned out to be 30-35% for cheaper.

They probably couldn't get enough on the boat from china? . Seem's like they couldn't make enough product and bring it to market. I don't think it's totally a demand thing. I don't think there is 1,000's of people lining up to buy a $700 graphics card during time of economic contraction.

I think AMD is showing their best card. They want to get people hyped and to wait for release (rather than buying Nvidia today).

Maybe they have other surprises, like ray tracing performance, competitor to DLSS, or some other software trick up their sleeve.

But what they showed is head-to head with the 3080, and that is probably the most we can reasonably expect from AMD.

If they had good RT performance we would have heard about it. Same goes for something like DLSS.

That's what the 28th is for. This tease was just to get impatient people interested in waiting that long.

Maybe. They released gaming benchmarks though. If they had killer RT performance to go along with the raster performance they would have shown it IMO. I could be wrong though, maybe they do have nice RT and a DLSS challenger. I'd like to see it. Guess we'll know in a couple of weeks.

I think we are going to see very competitive raster perf and lacking perf in terms of ray tracing. While DLSS is all the rage for talking about, the resources to implement it seem to be well beyond the abilities to add it into a vast number of titles. I think we will likely see an improved Radeon sharpening tech that will work in all games.

there are some decent profit margins sitting at the $1000 to $1500 range nvidia has laid out. It could be worthwhile to spec a big die and throw a heap of mem on a pcb especially when your competitor is haveing issues selling those $1500 cards to a line of customers.

I think "lacking" is a relative term though, most games that implement low/mid/high RT don't see much difference between mid/high, so hopefully it works well enough. If raster is there and it can at least do ok with RT I think think it'll sell just fine (especially with 16gm ram).

Not necessarily. They may want to save some surprises for the event.
AMD rarely if ever sandbags when they show off a product. Remember when they showed off an 8-core CPU (that would later be revealed to be the 3800X) and said it gamed better than an 9700K? They were technically correct because it was Forza Motorsport that it was gaming in, and it was still a great product, but they showed it in the BEST POSSIBLE LIGHT.

Chances are those benchmarks shown have Raytracing disabled for a reason, and the selection of games is probably hand-picked to show off the BEST numbers they have to offer.
