Baldurs Gate 3 - Official Discussion Thread (2019)

Yea. Their philosophy is they don't want to spoil the story but they want to provide enough content so they can test, adjust and balance mechanics. After the game is release they will continue to balance the later part of the games for several years. That is one nice thing with Larian is they will fix most of their games (the only exception was that dragon board game they dropped real fast and never touched afterwards). Even today they will fix their oldest games if problems are found.

If I remember correctly D:OS 2 early access was actually discounted but not sure since i got it via the kickstarter (which was discounted a lot).

Full price, content offered is dictated by dev rather than an accepted standard. Most EA stuff trickles out content, but if the dev does this like DOS2 it will be the first area with ~20 hours of gameplay that you are basically testing and all the rest will come at launch.

I love Larian as a dev, but their testing method for DOS 2 resulted in a very polished first Act and then an increasingly rougher mechanics expeirence from then on. It really highlights the benefit of extensive testing in a single game.

This will mostly be a first for me. I've only briefly played the Divinity games and I've never done the early access thing.
I'm very familiar with Baldur's Gate, the classic D&D games from the 90's, NWN, and even the Neverwinter MMO, though.
Looks like they put a lot into the character races and powers from what I've seen. I like to play a pretty vanilla human thief, so most of that will be lost on me. My main hope is that the NPC's you can recruit are as well-curated as the old games. I always had a ragtag bunch of characters that bickered and hated one another, but we made it work.

Going to wait around until 12:00 thinking of calling into work.
Took some more vacation like a week in Nov. so I can either play this game or snag a 3080RTX.

I can't buy the damn thing. It keeps giving me this
"There seems to have been an error initializing or updating your transaction. Please wait a minute and try again or contact support for assistance."
2020 is officially the year than online stores won't take my money.

Finally got it

60 gig download so I won't be playing today :D

Yup, mine finally worked. I'll probably test out the character creation portion this afternoon (if I have a few minutes to break away from work), but I probably won't seriously dive in for a few days.

I've been on the fence about getting this in EA. I generally dislike beta testing, not because of bugs or unfinished things. I just hate when something is known and devs ignore or don't fix it and release a broken game.
But I think I'm going to jump into this one.

I fired it up and everything seems to work fine. I got scared there were no options at first, but it turns out that was just for the pre-game launcher.
I'd love to know if there are any visual differences in DX11 vs. Vulkan. There probably shouldn't be, but in some games there definitely are.

I don't think you'll regret it. Larian has a good reputation for a reason. I bought into Divinity OS2 early access mostly because 3 friends wanted to play it. I didn't regret it and the quality was there from the begining. I think I will wait and see what the general consensus is on BG3 but I will probably buy it in EA.

This person's review is pretty awful. For one thing they're tearing the game down based on "characters hating the player character" as though that's some kind of innate flaw rather than just a part of the story. Also, this line stood out to me: "Punishing dialog with frequent feat rolls practically demands save-scumming." If this person was a "hardcore RPG player" as they claim to be, they wouldn't save scum, they'd role play with the results they got, just as you'd do in a tabletop session. I mean what the hell, dicey dialogue rolls have been a staple of a lot of CRPGs for a VERY long time. Very cringey.

I'm having issues getting used to the controls, granted I've been able to get in about 15 mins today, but not quite as intuitive off the bat. Maybe my opinion will change as I get further in. Super stoked its in early access now though. *note, huge OG Baldurs gate/icewind dale player back in day and enhanced editions.

yeah i read that article too and thought the same thing when i read that line then just dismissed the rest of the article at that point.

I'm inclined to agree, I find it much more fun to roll with the punches rather than shit going your way 100% of the time.

Love how the character creation is a complete monster factory if you let it be. I made Beardella, a Tiefling Warlock seductress with a silk tongue and a raging lady boner for an equally bearded but still all woman Halfling.

Also, didn't realize you could actually act at the same time under certain circumstances and my partner accidentally shoved someone out of my line of fire

He doesnt say HE save scums. He said the game lends itself to wanting to.

But what specifically makes BG3 lend itself to making him want to save scum? You could say the same thing about literally any roll-based choice, and my original point stands: that's been a thing in RPGs since forever, and I don't see what makes it different or worse in BG3. I guess maybe the sheer abundance of them maybe gave him the impression that "I should be winning at least one of these choices" but that's an illogical sentiment.

He does come across as a bit of a baby wanting the game to be designed a different way rather than accepting it as designed.

So is this game worth a crap or should I wait for a sale?

Its early access, which I have plenty of exp with and am not interested in the concept at this time. Larian makes great games though, so I'd totally check it out when its full release. in fact my gaming group is looking forward to multiplayer in it, we had a blast trucking through Divinity original sin 2 (and love that the acronym is Dos!)

Thanks, yeah I'm going to wait until the full product is released. I've done early access a couple of times before and got burned. Granted this is a AAA title but don't see the point in getting used to something with the possibility that it could be changed.

I'm just going to play 20-30 minutes to get the jist of it see if I like it or not.
Then I'll wait for the final release maybe a year from now.

This game is Epic really like the ablity to Zoom close by your character or way out in the distance. Think I'm done though untill final release no idea if the saves will keep ect so it might be a wasted effort think I spoiled it enough in my 45 minutes of play. That Drow is hot lol good motion capture...

I watched some of a live stream of it last night. It looks great. It seems very similar in gameplay to the original.

There were bugs though. Even if I didn't see any, I no longer buy EA games. I've been burned by them enough. I'll buy it on release though.

Quill18 is doing a lets play of the early access. If you like Divinity, you'll likely like this. I would say with the one major change of BG3 plunging you much faster into the narrative aspects of the story, where as Divinity has a lot more meandering in the early game.

Just as a standard sort of streamer warning, the first video he spends a lot of time just talking while rolling his character and it takes him a while to get going. But in the subsequent videos it's all gameplay, combat, and character story interaction.

I'd skip watching any/all of it though if you don't want spoilers.

Based upon early access, game looks great to me - nice and story centric with you in the middle. Combat looks good. High levels of interactivity. Game engine looks fantastic for a game of this type. And it has a macOS version. I'll likely wait until launch and then pickup a copy.

It's an ok read, but that's 15 hours of early access, but is it the same early access as what was released for purchase not quite three hours ago?

Anyone confirm it still plays as Ars mentions?

I personally am interested in it, but know better to purchase till a few patches come around.

I have not had time to play more than a few hours but I did get to one of the encounters he mentions. It was not hard and I thought it was very obvious solution.
Kill the mindflayer, took one arrow, and you don't have to kill the fishermen

Liking it so far. Looking forward to more companions and classes.

Article is literally about a quote straight from the developer so I don't get whatever point you're trying to make here
