I have core envy but my 7700k still games well. Haven't been [H] in awhile and it calls to me. Something AMD with quadruple the cores sounds nice.
 
I can't really answer this... which quad core? I replaced my sons 6600k with a 3700x, so yes, I did upgrade that quad core. My wife's, I did not update. My 2 daughters PC's are not getting upgraded this year. I actually upgraded my 6-core to an 8-core, so not sure if that really counts? And I built a new PC with only 2 cores... so, not even 4 cores... then my other 4-core for my 3d-printer and desktop CNC machine isn't going to be upgraded either this year.... so, basically yes/no?

Basically this.....

I just recently updated my server from E5-2643 to E5-2637v2. 4c/8t -> 4c/8t with higher clocks, better ipc & virtualization improvements...does that count? LOL

See, even my server has L5640's, so dual 6-core chips ;). And those are from like 2011. I may upgrade that to a single 6-core that is faster, lol.
 
Yes, I'll be upgrading my 4790k to a 10 core or higher.
I recently upgraded my Plex server from an 8 core to a 4 core, old FX-8150 to an i7 4770 I got from a friend when I built him a new 3900X.
 
Uhh, if I can actually get my hands on all the parts I want in time.

I'd like to go from this 6700k to a 5900x. Hopefully there's not a shortage of shit.
 
I already upgraded last year. I feel like you need a minimum of 8 cores for modern games and apps. You can "get by" with 6 cores but you are bottlenecking your GPU for sure with only 4 cores.
 
Bought a R3 1300X bout a year an a half ago on ebay for less than the price of a 1200 at the time.

Two months ago, buddy of mine offered me his R5 1600 for $50. I couldn't say no. Sold the 1300X for damn near what I bought it for.

Did I need 6 cores? Not really but, was to good a deal to pass up.
 
Well I upgraded my main computer from a 2500k (quad core) to a 5820k (hex core) 5 years ago. I've since moved on to a 3900X (12 core).

If you are wondering if quad-core is enough going forward, I would caution against generalizations and look at your specific usage. Many games and apps continue to be very reliant on single-core IPC. Even if the game itself is well multi-threaded, that doesn't mean that everything that game does is being cleanly divided among the available cores. You might have a small number of threads handling very important tasks and several others handling other tasks. You're not going to see much difference between a quad-core and a 16-core CPU if your game is only using 3 cores.

There is also going to be a difference between a Quad-core that has hyper-threading vs one that does not. Just think back to the venerable 2500k. There was very little difference in performance between a 2500k and a 2600k at the time, with the main difference being hyper-threading support. That performance delta has increased over time.
 
I wanted to see a 7nm 4c/8t and with the 3300x long gone I decided 3100 as to over pay $5 MSRP .. also my new MSI B550m Mortar has PCI Express 4.0 link as does the cpu .. so watch this video as they pair it with a 3080 RTX .



They are running 3.9Ghz boost , but my chip boost to 4.1Ghz without really being overclocked other then auto .. It's still free to scale the clocks down when no load is not there unlike a hard overclock .

Yes, I upgraded from a 2500k to a 6700k two years ago because of performance with word and referencing (either the i7 or the m.2 drive resolved the issue). A buddy of mine is partway through a no-budget upgrade, he picked up a 1080 ti and Ryzen 7 3700x to this month to play with while waiting for a 3080 and new Ryzen chip. My wife said, why don't you upgrade your computer as a Christmas present. I'm thinking 3080, 8 or 12 core Ryzen, B550 and an 850w PSU. It will be the first time I've bought new parts since my 2500k (before I decided a PhD was a smart idea).
 
Depends on what you play. Most people around here seem to think anything less than 6-8 cores is unusable, but my 4 core 4 thread 6600k is still playing everything I have tried just fine.

I'm waiting to see what Ryzen 3 brings
 
It's been so long since I've upgraded, I don't even remember how many cores I have. Sure, I could Google 2700k, but I think I'm just gonna keep my eyes on the prize. 5800X here I come!
 
The last quad core CPU I used in my gaming rig was a Core i7 920. I ditched that for a Core i7 980X and haven't looked back.
 
Still using my X58 system which I recently gave a slightly longer lease on life with a RAM (6 to 12gb), GPU (R9 290 to 1080ti) and CPU (i7 930 to Xeon) upgrade. I think Zen 3 and x570 will finally allow me to retire this rig after 10 solid years of service....and hopefully get 10 years out of that system as well.

The only quad core I have left is the Xeon X58 box. I may put it up for sale and upgrade before the year is out.
 
no upgrades for me this year because I'm broke af and my life is a mess lol. in the past 18 months I've gone from i5 2320 -> Ryzen 1600 -> Ryzen 3600 to my current FX 8320 + Vega 64 rig. It's a good ole AMD shitbox, everything all overclocked and hot as heck. I do find the CPU caps the framerate in newer games to 30-60fps so I just severely overload the GPU with Reshade addons until the CPU bottleneck isn't noticeable ;-)

I might upgrade to a Ryzen 3700 once used prices are l o w. 8c16T seems like a good bet for a midrange build, but on the other hand 3600s are gonna be dirt cheap next year so who knows what I'll end up with.
 
I have a 7700K + 2070 super and a 2920X + 1080ti.

I would love to upgrade the 7700k but it still plays games really well so it's hard for me to just do it for the heck of it, I should probably just consider selling the CPU and Mobo as a combo to offset an upgrade purchase.
 
Don't have a quad core left outside of my laptop.
Gaming went from 6700K to a 10700K, which was the last.
Workstation was a 8350, went to TR 3960.
HTPC was a crap laptop, will soon be a 1950X
NAS was a dual core phenom, will shortly be a 6 core Haswell Xeon most likely... ~shrug~

I have a 6700K that I delided, which allows me to OC to [email protected]. I can do [email protected]. I see absolutely no reason to buy a new cpu when I play at 1440, which is mostly GPU. Look at the below 1440 summary graph, you will find that most of the mid-higher end cpus are only a few % difference from each other.

My advice for you is that you keep your 7700k, get a rockit delid/relid tool and some TG conducto, and OC the shit out of that bitch. Breathes new life into it, thats for sure. I'll upgrade when 12core 5ghz are $200 and 95 tdp

I'm not upgrading my 4790k main gaming PC or 3570k HTPC until next year. I don't have the spare cash I thought I would after wrecking my car (but it was way cheaper to pay my miracle machanic than have the insurance company total the car, then double my rates for the next 3 years).

Next fall, I'll pick up some Zen 3 6 and 8-cores on-clearance (no need to jump to DDR5) :D

If you're cool with 60 fps, I guess. I definitely can't drive several titles at 120+ fps with this processor.

Warzone drops to 70-80 in a few (honestly pretty rare, though) parts of the map. I am blatantly CPU bound in these cases, at 1440p.

There's a big difference between stock 4.0ghz and 4.7ghz. with my 5700xt I get 100fps easy in warzone and cod

I'm at 4.6.

I'm generally in the 100~ range but that sure as fuck ain't the minimum. It's easy to tell because you can just enable the GPU/CPU time counter in game and in worst cases I can see CPU climb up to 13-14 ms while the GPU is at like 8-9 ms. So I'm dipping at like mid 70 fps instead of the perpetual 100+ I could theoretically.

I'd probably be close to 100 fps if averaged across the match, but the worst case is what bothers me.

Plus it's not going to be so fun dropping a 3080 in and gaining a fraction of what I potentially could.

Although I had upgraded my main system to an 8-core CPU last December, I still have a quad-core in my mini-ITX box. I had been running quad-core CPUs even in my main rig as late as this past December.

I am now considering an update of my mini-ITX box with a newer-generation CPU later this year. However, I have not yet decided on whether the new CPU will be a quad-core or has more cores.
 
Interesting. I didn't know cod showed those metrics.

I just use fps and ping. Which in xplay is horrible btw
 
I might downgrade to 4c8t, depending on pricing of the 5xxx series. It'd probably still be a serious upgrade from my 1600.
 
I voted "No" because the systems that needed more than 4 cores, I already upgraded a long time ago. Those that don't can stay with 4 cores throughout 2020.
 
I've had a 6 core for a while. Initially bought with the intentions of using modeling or editing software but really I just play games
 
Has anyone benched a RX 5700 XT on the x58 platform ? my rig needs a new power supply as my Palm crewed the ends off of my connections of the 10+ Year Old Corsair TX 950 supply for my Xeon x 5660
 
I said no because I don't have a quad core. Even the android tablet has more cores than that. With that said I did upgrade my 6 core x58 system in 2020 to a 12 core / 24T 3900X at the beginning of the lockdown
 
Yes. Been chugging away on my i7-3770K since its release day.

Was going to go 2700X way back when, but that got put on hold.

Planned for 3700X, but merely got complacent and never bought one.

Now, after seeing the potential gains that Zen3 will be providing, I'm glad I waited and have already started buying parts for a 5700X build.

If the rumors/leaks are true, then I should see around a 70% jump in single-thread and around a 300% jump in multi-thread performance. This will be the biggest CPU upgrade I've ever experienced.

Except maybe for the 8088 "Turbo" 8MHz to Am386 SX-40 back in the early 90s, but who's keeping track?
