Star Wars: Squadrons

Did anyone of you guys hear about branded promotions for the game?

Chips, candy, soda, cereal, toys, comicbooks, apparel from the game, etc?

Usually there's Star Wars PR hype tied to giveaways, Disney never misses a chance to make a $.

There's legions of people that'll buy stuff that won't even play the game they can sell Squadrons stuff.

Well, Disney does like catering to children *wink *wink

Wherever there is a buck to be made, you can bet a company like Disney will make it.

It releases in a couple days.
You'd think there would be some promo to sell cereal.
Push in game purchases, special cosmetic item with 5 bags of Doritos codes redeemed, chance at a branded PS5 if you ate enough fast food, etc.

Easy $ grab is at least a line of game cobranded ships for $40-80/pop

I didn't see anything at Walmart the last junk food promotion wa Pringles on Overwatch esports thing which was canceled.

After Jedi Outcast I really want to support this but will definitely be passing until there are reviews, and more news on whether the SP is just tacked on 5-6 hours or if it is longer.

the $39.99 price point is a surprising move by EA...normally they would charge $59.99 no matter how short the game was

the $40 price is why I suspect the campaign is probably going to be insanely short, like 4 hours or less

edit: FOUR.... HOOOOUUUURRRSSSSS

isn't this game mainly a multiplayer title?...sort of like Battlefield which has a single player component but is mainly focused on MP

And now I don't feel as pumped about this game. I will still get it, but i might wait a bit on it.

"According to an interview with EA Motive, Star Wars Squadrons’ solo campaign is as long as a standard singe-player campaign in a multiplayer game"

:ROFLMAO: That is a such bullshitting way to say "it's short." I mean just say what the length is and reiterate the MP focus. Oh wait, it is EA, I forgot...

most people are buying this for the MP...the people that buy CoD or BF for the single player are a small minority...it's a MP focused game...I enjoyed the Starfighter Assault part of Battlefront 2 so I'm hoping this is an extension of that

Anyone have thoughts on the VR support? Like would that realistically only be viable for the campaign?

Don't have a VR headset, but I remember the virtual cockpits and padlock view from X-Wing Alliance. Only two fighters have what I'd call great cockpit visibility, the X-Wing and the A-Wing. The other six fighters have lousy visibility- the TIEs and Y-Wing have almost no vertical visibility, and no TIE has lateral or aft visibility.

I'm curious how useful VR in this game will actually be.

reviews are popping up but im not finding length, but if its 12 hours - I'm good, if its 5 hours I'll wait for a sale.

I just pay for a month of PlayPro then cancel. $15, I play the campaign, mess around a bit with the multi-player then call it good. If I really like it I'll grab it when it goes on sale.

It looks like a refined and deeper version of the Starfighter Assault mode in Battlefront 2. If that's the case, then I'm probably going to enjoy it. Space combat games were my first love in PC gaming. First person shooters are second to those. Unfortunately, the space combat genre pretty much died off years ago.

Pretty much what I am going in it for. An MP space shooter. I expect the campaign to be underwhelming, but considering the price I paid ($32) it isn't big deal. For an MP game with a tacked on campaign that is fine.

They have been very clear about this.. Nothing wrong with how EA has handled this release... ( yet )

Screwing around in some tutorial mode:

No idea what I am doing, but those are what the graphics look like at max settings.

Think using a mouse is too inefficient, might have to switch to a controller.

Edit: Played around a bit.

The default Xbox controller axis design is horrific. The left thumb stick controls throttle and roll. Who thought that was a good idea? The right controls up, down and yaw. Which makes steering practically impossible. So to go down, you need to roll with the left stick and and pull up with the right stick.

Essentially, you're using two sticks. And for some reason, one of the sticks is also a throttle. Its like these guys have never used an Xbox controller before or ever played a flight game. All axis (except yaw) should be on the left stick. That way you can properly maneuver. The throttle should be on the triggers. Ace Combat does it flawlessly and you get precise control. Star Wars Squadrons, as it is, is unplayable on a 360 controller. Yes, you can edit the controls but I am not sure if you can merge the stick axis to one stick and separate the throttle from it. I can't believe they screwed it up so much.

You may be forced to use a HOTAS for this game. Suppose I'll try that eventually to.

Edit 2: For a HOTAS, rolling = yaw. Three control inputs that they couldn't get right. Had no one at EA motive ever played a flight game before?

Embarrassing.

Played the first couple of missions on the Index and enjoyed it a lot. There's a VR toggle button, and then it all just worked without an issue. The default control bindings for my x52 (and other hotas users from what I've read) are a complete shitshow. Almost got them sorted out, but there still seems to be some odd places where it's hard-coded to a button that's been remapped to something else. Tempted to just use an xbox controller tbh, maybe I'll try that tomorrow.

Multi player games have no single player campaign. If it's a multiplayer game I don't want it, thanks. I want a spiritual successor to X-Wing Alliance. You can't have your cake and eat it too. This is the most weasely statement I've seen.

Did anyone pick up the Steam version? If so, how is it working with regards to Origin? Do you require an Origin/EA account at least? If so, I'm wondering if one can pick up the pre-order DLC codes (for the Origin version), activate them there, and it will properly attribute them to your account , accessible even connected through Steam? One frustrating element when there's a Steam version and a big name publisher-platform like Ubi's UPlay or EA's Origin is that the vast majority of 3rd party key sales and discounted versions are going to activate on Origin. Anyone find a discount greater than 10%?

If I decide to give this a go I'll have to try it both against a gamepad and my HOTAS; I may even give the VR version a shot on my Valve Index as I've not tried a "VR game that uses standard KB/M / Joystick controls instead of VR controllers" title yet.

Played a bit last night, I use a cheap thrustmaster HOTAS I picked up for elite years ago in combination with the keyboard. Which is how I played the OG x-wing and tie fighter back in the day. There are a LOT of throwbacks to the xwing/tie games here and I'm pretty pleased about it. Overall I'm enjoying it only real complaint I have so far is that even though the steam FPS counter shows me north of my 144hz refresh rate the game feels like its playing at a console limited 30 fps, hopefully they fix that soon because I want buttery smooth gameplay.

Drop down to the 60Hz setting. Appears to be a bug.

Yeah it's currently broken unless you play at 60hz v-sync. Basically the "unlocked framerate" is a lie right now. It's 60hz/60fps or stutter town. https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWarsSq...ks_like_half_of_what_it_actually_is/?sort=new

The only way to get a smooth VR experience is to force perma reprojection - either by pushing your settings too high or by forcing it on (with the Oculus debug tool for example).

A lot of people are doing that by accident and don't notice/care because of motion smoothing/ASW doing their magic - that's why some reviewers didn't say anything and some people are still enjoying it. But it's not cool with the artifacts and all, especially because the engine actually can easily push 90+ fps in VR with a decent rig (my 1080 ti can do it on the Rift S with 30-40% headroom on full ultra settings).

It's just the way in which the engine outputs frames that is currently broken. The devs said they are aware and working on it. Let's see how long it takes...

But you liked Infinite War enough. I'll play this campaign eventually and will see if it is a glorified bots mode or a proper campaign.

It does. Not sure about the rest. I went with Origin directly, paid $32.70 total.

Yeah, but Infinite Warfare devs didn't make excuses for the length/nature of the single player campaign before release. I think I'll just pay one month of origin access, and then I can play Jedi Fallen Order too, two birds, one stone etc.

I might sub to EA Play Pro and check this out over the weekend. Seems like it should be fun enough.

Fallen Order is definitely worth checking out. I'm going to get EA Play (that is such a terrible name) for this one as well and play it over the weekend. Have a rare two-day weekend this week and that should be plenty of time to get through the campaign.

Speaking of EA Play / Access, I'm glad that Steam is offering EA Play now, but it seems they don't offer the version that supports the newest / deluxe content version of games like Squadrons or Fallen Order? That's disappointing - why not give EA Play Pro an option on Steam as well, especially as both titles (not to mention future games coming to steam like Apex Legends; I'll be happy when that's not just on Origin any longer) as well as the back catalog is on Steam now ?

I hope to see more partnerships with "subscription" services that allow users full access to titles on Steam (ie Ubi has one of their own, EA, and Microsoft GamePass Ultimate would be a great one) instead of just proprietary clients - its mutually beneficial for everyone involved. However, there's no point to it if they only use limited versions where users can play older or limited back catalog titles.

OMG, this is awful. Controls are a mess. And it feels like fighting ants. Everything looks tiny compared to your cockpit. I swear it's like flying a star destroyer at least, X-Wings are tiny specks on the screen. And a Star Destroyer barely fills up my window even from up close.

I could barely get a few shots off at the enemy before getting completely destroyed. The most laughable part: Diverted 100% power to engines. And an X-Wing still blew past me like I was standing still.

But the worst are truly the controls, it's unplayable with a stick. I bumped sensitivity to 100% and still the response is delayed and tiny to any input I make. Dead zone is set to 0% and I still have to push the stick at least 50% before I get any movement at all. Thank god I didn't buy this game.

Power and shield management is needlessly over complicated compared to the classics. You achive the same basic functions, but with using three times as many keys for it.
