Who is buying a 3080 and 3090?

Im stoked to replace my 1080ti ! Ill be going 3080, as an mmo player, 3090 is more than I need, I think, despite my 3440x1440 asus ultra wide

I have a 1080ti. I want a 3090, but given how hard launch day cards are to get, I’m going to try for the 3080. If I get it, great, it sits in the shrink wrap and I’ve got an upgrade if I don’t snag a 3090. If I land the 3090 that 3080 gets listed for sale in 10 seconds flat.

I think I'm gonna be in for a 3080. My 2070 is working fine but I would like to get 120+ in my games with maxed settings and I think a 3080 would be able to do that on my 1080 monitor.

My kid's PC needs a refresh as he's trying to make YouTube videos of him and his friends gaming so I'm actually toying with going all out, giving him my current rig and then building me a new one maybe with an Intel 10600K....it would be my first Intel rig since 2008.

And yes I'm aware than I'm shamelessly exploiting my 11 year old son's desire to make YouTube videos in order to justify building myself a new PC from the ground up...... Don't judge me.

I'd probably get a 3080 if I can find one on launch day, if not then I'll rock the 2080 super til the next series comes out

Gonna sit on bestbuy and nvidia site thursday morning for a 3080 fe, If I can't get that, gonna wait for a 400w part from an AIB

I think the 3090 will lose their status fast once the 3080 Ti + Super variants comes out...

Going for a 3080 to replace my 2080 for my 3440x1440p 120 Hz monitor. I've been happy with the 2080 for the most part already, so I'm sure a 3080 will be good enough for me and it seems like a 3090 would mostly be wasted on anything less than a 4k 120 Hz display or maybe a 1440p 240 Hz if you're really trying to push those frame rates in newer more demanding games.

If availability is an issue for several months, I'll wait for the inevitable "Super" refresh with probably more VRAM. I'm not paying much over MSRP for one though at any point.

Sounds like Nvidia is playing us all for fools with the FE cards.

If that is remotely accurate, it's not Samsung that will be the cause of shortages.

I'll try to get a 3080, but if I don't I'll Wait and see what comes down the pipeline.
that's bull crap

historically FE cards haven't ever gone up from MSRP at least in nvidia shop, wether you can get one in stock is another matter.

Nvidia does not benefit from shortages, they get the same money from any GPU no matter if it ends up selling for $500 or $1000 to the end user.

AIB partners also don't benefit from shortages, the only ones that really benefit are stores and ebay resellers.

Shame on you!!!!

I'm thinking of doing the same thing :D :D ;);)

Nah, it will remain top dog until a Titan is released.

it has nothing to do with remaining top dog...people are going to have buyers remorse spending $1500 when the Ti/Super cards come out sooner...

Actually, they do benefit if you read the article...

1). Nvidia can say that the "price" is $699 even though the margin on that $699 is historically low for FE cards due to the cooler.
2). When AIB have dramatically higher prices, they can say, "But the FE is only $699" and they don't want to ship it in volume because of 1). They are going to make the same money off of the AIB manufacturers regardless of what they charge. FE cards are going to be perpetually sold out at Nvidia's storefront.
3). The FE cards that outperform the $699 AIB cards are going to be the ones that get Day 1 reviews, which are the only reviews people actually read unfortunately. An EVGA "Black" card is going to be priced at $699, but won't perform like an FE card, but people will buy them anyway due to the Day 1 review of the FE card.

Not only that but the person who has written the article has been spot on about Ampere for months now. He does hold a pretty good track record.

Yeah, I was reading that article earlier today and it just didn't make any sense for the points you just made.

1) How does that benefit nViida exactly?
2) How does that benefit nVidia exactly?
3) This would benefit nvidia, but has nothing to do with a shortage benefiting nVidia. Qutie the opposite. What would befefit nVidia more, Day 1 reviews being great as well as end user experience or great day 1 reviews and disappointed end users?

All you did was repeat what the article said but did not address how it's "not" BS.

3080 with WB most likely; unless there's a major difference in 1440P numbers for the 3090.

I sold my PS4, now to try to move this 2080 super to help soften the 3080 blow

IF #3 has right, it would backfire BIG TIME. Assuming the AIB cards were not up to speed compared to FE cards, you can bet social media would destroy nvidia. AFAIK only OC versions of ampere cards are coming later. So most cards should perform as FE cards, since the specs are the same.

All fanboy-ism or did you not read and comprehend the entire article?

I can definitely see Nvidia playing pricing games and fooling people...the $700 Founders price on the 3080 is going to be significantly higher with AIB cards...same with the 3070 16GB and 3080 20GB variants...all the reviews will say $700 but the reality will be much worse

AIB != nVidia. The only way you can say nVidia is responsible or benefiting from AIB pricing is if nVidia increases the GPU pricing to the AIB's but if that were to happen, it wouldn't stay secret for long.

BTW the cooler on FE cards doesn't really look expensive. Sure its big, but that doesn't necesarily means its costly. Unless its magnesium alloy/aluminum like the GTX 690.

I'm definitely not buying an aib card. If I can't get my hands on a founders then I'm not getting one.

So the only reason I could see them creating rumours of shortages is that they want people to jump on pre order / buying right away knowing that AMD will have something relatively competitive coming and hoping you buy before realizing it.
I personally find it hard to believe that the EVGA black cards will under-perform as someone suggested. Prob the Ventus / Armor and a few other models will, but they have historically anyways if you ask me. I will probably pick up a 3080FE and then later also pick up second tier AMD but aftermarket. This is the first NV founders cooler that I have ever considered. I fully expect AMD to put out a competitive card with a shitty stock cooler.

Well remember that Nvidia kind of did something like this with the turing cards. The $999 2080ti black versions of the cards were inferior to the $1200 FE and other AIB model cards. So, it does not shock me that Nvidia does this sort of thing again.

This was more chip binning though and not so much related to cooler quality? Yeah I heard a rumour there may be 3 tiers of binning this time? I was not convinced that the differences in binning were enough of a big deal. I will certainly make a decision based on noise levels and temps and but am less concerned about +- 50 or so MHZ of boosting difference due to binning. I have both a 1080ti "Black" and a FTW3 and i find the differences between the two are minimal in terms of performance. Can't speak to Turing cards though since i don't have any.

Hate to say it but the FE version looks a lot better than most of the AIB cards. It’s like the AIB aren’t even trying anymore. I might grab a 3080 FE on release day if I can just to see how it is.

With NV cards having 80% market share it's really a gold mine for the AIB's to cut costs and reap the benefits. Until they produce real junk they'll continue to rake in the bucks. Not saying it's right but that is business. Gotta make that money.

I don't think they did that for 1000 series. Really started with the Turing cards.

Yeah, but the die size for Turing and hence the yields drove this as much as cost I believe. I could be wrong or right. Who knows?

Well it would explain why nvidia decided to produce FE cards, it keeps the lazy AIB designs in check. This is the first release though where I think the FE design is superior with regards to engineering effort put in.

Yes I think you are right that NVIDIA didn't do any binning prior to 2000 series, but I believe EVGA and other did at least some binning for Black VS FTW / Kingpin etc. It just wasn't separated at the silicon level prior to getting to them. My main point (if i have one? ) is that i am not expecting the EVGA black series to suck VS founders.

I'd love to grab one of each, or at least a 3080 (FE). I'm not waiting in line at microcenter or maniacally refreshing a page at midnight though.

Have a feeling they will be grabbed by scalpers, miners, bots etc... I am not optimistic.

I'll be looking for an EVGA 3080 FTW3 Hybrid to replace my EVGA 2080 Super FTW3 Hybrid.

Nevermind. I'll be getting a 3080 FE directly from Nvidia on the 17. Might see if Bestbuy Canada has anything before but sincerly doubt they'll have stock.

What HDMI cord will you buy? I can't find a certified 48gbs cable that has the camera code on it from the hdmi agency to verify..
