I haven't purchased my sound cards yet.Sure, that is what we used to do before the gods invented Optical and HDMI: It's called RCA jacks.
If your high-end sound card doesn't come with RCA outs, you can covert headphone jack to RCA.

If you have multiple output choices on your soundcard, Line-out will give you the best quality connecting to a receiver. Just match the colors with the jacks in the back of your receiver (or you get flipped channels)
What about taking the xbox/apple tv/Playstation and running it through he PC sound card and then sending it back to the receiver? Is that a thing?
I like the Anthem a lot, but I know there are better external DACs out there. So I am hoping to use an external DAC before going into the Anthem.When you have a receiver, you can just route everything through that, and then select when you want to listen to.
You're just talking about using your PC as a soft mixer, so why no use the dedicated hardware?

I was hoping I could use the computer to do this. But I don't think I can.
You're going to have to buy HDMI inputs for your PC, which are not cheap (especially if you want 4k). You will also run into DRM-protected content pass-through issues.
Your best option would be going with a DRM-approved HDMI switch that had an optical output, and use that to drive your DAC -> receiver -> Speakes

It meas you will only be using a single input on your receiver, and controlling everything through that switch.

correct - the product features optical out extracted from the HDMI you have selected. You can rub that through a DAC.

AudioScienceReview's two reviews of Anthem AVRs confirm this. They also show that the DACs are the best part of the Anthems. IOW, an external DAC probably will be bottlenecked by your Anthem's amps.I like the Anthem a lot, but I know there are better external DACs out there.
