Is this possible?

To run audio through my PC's external audio card so that the DAC is used first before going into my Anthem MRX 710 and out to my speakers?

Like an output directly from my PC into my receiver. So that I can play Spotify. Would that work?

Sure, that is what we used to do before the gods invented Optical and HDMI: It's called RCA jacks.

If your high-end sound card doesn't come with RCA outs, you can covert headphone jack to RCA.

If you have multiple output choices on your soundcard, Line-out will give you the best quality connecting to a receiver. Just match the colors with the jacks in the back of your receiver (or you get flipped channels)

I haven't purchased my sound cards yet.

I'm building a PC as we speak. Still searching for the right sound card.

This sounds like a win win here. I recently found out that Amazon has lossless music too. So this should be quite an improvement over my current streaming setup!

What about taking the xbox/apple tv/Playstation and running it through he PC sound card and then sending it back to the receiver? Is that a thing?

I used to do this, back when I was poor, and wanted to run multiple PCs off one monitor/speaker system, but you may notice a hit in quality unless you do digital to digital.

When you have a receiver, you can just route everything through that, and then select when you want to listen to.

You're just talking about using your PC as a soft mixer, so why no use the dedicated hardware?

I like the Anthem a lot, but I know there are better external DACs out there. So I am hoping to use an external DAC before going into the Anthem.

I was hoping I could use the computer to do this. But I don't think I can.

You're going to have to buy HDMI inputs for your PC, which are not cheap (especially if you want 4k). You will also run into DRM-protected content pass-through issues.

Your best option would be going with a DRM-approved HDMI switch that had an optical output, and use that to drive your DAC -> receiver -> Speakes

It meas you will only be using a single input on your receiver, and controlling everything through that switch.

Thank you so much for the help!

Is that product also a DAC? Or do I get that and then buy my DAC?

So basically it would look like this...?

Source > Monoprice Blackbird > DAC > Receiver

Is that right?

correct - the product features optical out extracted from the HDMI you have selected. You can rub that through a DAC.

That sounds EXACTLY what I am looking for. Thank you so much for the help!

Any DAC suggestions?

You're asking the wrong person - I'm perfectly happy With a Xonar DGX on my main music system, and for my TV, -> speakers I have some cheap $20 DAC from amazon.

If you're the picky type, I'd ask in Computer Audio. Just be sure to give them a budget, and tell them what you listen to.

AudioScienceReview's two reviews of Anthem AVRs confirm this. They also show that the DACs are the best part of the Anthems. IOW, an external DAC probably will be bottlenecked by your Anthem's amps.

Oh... haha Well that's good news. But also a tad upsetting. Was hoping for ways to improve!

The Amp is a powerhouse. It sounds clear. I'm really happy with the setup. But like most of us here, we crave more and more. I am starting with Amazon HD streaming service and then going from there.
