I have a desktop that I wanted to implement a 2 drive mirroring, so if 1 drive goes bad I can still get my files from the second then replace the bad drive and have it join back that mirror. Window has two ways to do a 2 drive mirror using disk management using dynamic disks or storage spaces using storage pools.

1.Whats the difference between disk management and storage space 2 disk mirroring?
2.Which one is more reliable?
3.Is Windows self healing REFS (Resilient File System) reliable?
4.Why did they remove REFS (Resilient File System) from windows 10 is there something wrong with it?
5.Online show I can still force REFS (Resilient File System) by commands would that compromise its reliability?
6. If I were to get a PCI Express RAID card and have the two drives in RAID 1 mirroring can my windows drive C still be AHCI (not raid)? I read that you can only choose one?

Thanks!

3. Yes.
4. They didn't, it's available in Pro for Workstations.
5. Huh?
6. Can't be AHCI if you have the RAID card manage the array.

Why not use MBO's RAID 1?

Because my OS drive is normal AHCI, if I were to choose RAID1 mirroring for my 2x storage drives it I would have to switch my os drive to raid setting. Will that mess up my OS drive?

If you're really concerned about data integrity, get a NAS, and do backups to cloud etc.

Also, what you're really asking is just RAID controller vs. OS RAID, and NTFS vs. ReFS.

So I'll say this.

Doing something simple in Disk Management will provide all of the benefits and none of the drawbacks of the other configurations. ReFS may be a better filesystem (or not), but it's not very portable, while at least NTFS could be read by just about anything.

I'd suggest asking yourself the question, 'how hard will it be to recover my data in the event of 'x' failure?', and expand 'x' to beyond just a drive failure, but also OS corruption, system failure (board/RAM/CPU), and so on.

It should work ok, with a couple of possible pre/post steps. Backup before any of these procedures, of course.

I’ve used REFS in a raid zero (2x14TB). It would get ridiculously slow sometimes. Like 5 mb a second.
Formatted to ntfs. Never had the issue again
