Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning (remaster)

That literally looks exactly the same as the original version... this seems more like a PS4/Xbox One version than anything else

I had this game back in the day, got to one of the final zones before hitting a wall with my build. It never really felt right, no jumping in particular felt like a massive limit.

It was a MMORPG without the MMO part, so all the worst things (imho the actual gameplay of mmorpgs is very lacking compared to single player games) about that genre. I didn't hate it, but didn't really like it either.

weird that they are remastering it, but strangely curious if they will have an audience.

Already posted, ignore.

Yeah not much to see, but waiting for a comparison video.

Seems basically pointless for PC owners. Looks just like they cranked up the resolution and left everything else as it was. It might be a decent buy if you never owned the original (or sold your old console), but no way they're getting any $ from me for that.

hopefully that was video from the console version...otherwise it doesn't look much different then the previous version

Yeah, apparently it is the console version according to the THQ community manager. The youtube compression doesn't do it any favours for sure. Will be interesting to see how it looks in person at 4K. Thing I'm looking forward to the most is the complete changelog of tweaks, bug fixes and updates. One feature confirmed is ability to map 8 abilities instead of 4.

September 8 presumed release date and no preorder ready and no stated price yet. That's a little odd isn't it? I wonder if that date is going to hold. I am going to be interested to see what the asking price will be for this, too.

Apparently they are definitely on track for Sept 8th release date.

Here's the pricing:

The Collector’s Edition for an SRP of $109.99 / €99.99 / £99.99.

Here's a round up of info they have released so far.

Just announced:
50% discount on steam digital copies for both versions of the game for people that already own the game on that platform.

This means Standard edition will be 50% for people that own the game, but also the FATE EDITION that INCLUDES the new expansion set to release in 2021 will also be 50% off for people that already own the old game.

This also stacks with the 10% launch discount, so 60% on BOTH The remaster and the remaster + new expansion.

This will run for 2 months after release, until November.

At least newer trailers show that the game got a little additional polish. Those first few looked just like the older game. With the 1/2 off discount I might bite this fall. I put so much time into this game and I really did enjoy it.

The more I see the less excited I get. My only pro was that it's been so long since I played the original I would've forgotten most of the game, but TBH, the game itself looks mostly forgettable.

To be fair, I think the target market for this game is really the fans of the original. Fans have been clamouring for gameplay balancing and bug fixes for years but have been thwarted by the lack of modding accessibility. Supposedly they are looking at potentially making modding more accessible but nothing is official yet.

I have a bit of a soft spot for Amalur. It's like the McDonalds of RPGs. Very casual, relaxing and almost meditative in the gameplay. Is it for everyone? Probably not. Am I gonna take it for another spin? Hell yes.

I remember remember combo attacks that you weren't truly able to take advantage of until really far into the game. You could do some half-ass attack strings early, but the large multi-hit juggles that they teased you with weren't accessible until 20 hours in. By the time you got to the good stuff, there were other approaches you could use or most players had already bailed. The game was insanely long and they held too much back. At the same time, the last areas were a throw-away.
That weird pacing was my one major gripe.

Yeah I remember getting to a certain point and just quitting. I was supposed to head to a castle and there were these large open swamp areas. I just ran around kiting and killing and it was boring. I did want to like the game. I gave it a fair shot but it wasn't worth finishing.

Here are some new gameplay details that were recently released.
  • Level lock has been removed
    • The original game determined the level of a zone on first entering, this was stored in the save file. In Re-Reckoning we re-calculate the level every time entering or re-entering a level
  • New zone Level calculation
    • The original game has all zones marked with a minimum and maximum level. on entering, the current player level was clamped into this minimum / maximum range and stored as level
    • We now use the current difficulty level as a means to determine the level before clamping into the minimum / maximum range. On Casual difficulty, the player level is reduced a bit, on hard and very hard it is increased. We also increase the maximum values for hard and very hard difficulty
    • The XP gain has been reduced to cater for the increased level of enemies and we made sure that XP is not increased when playing on harder difficulties due to the effect of beating higher level enemies
    • The result is that you can still out-level zones – which is desirable if it doesn‘t happen too quick. It is part of the power fantasy to be able to come back to initial zones and be over powered – but out-leveling zones you play for the first time should only happen rarely
  • We also made the zone Level calculation easier to modify by modders (PC only)
  • Loot level lock of Containers removed
    • Loot containers now only store their generated loot when they are opened while before they used to store it when entering a zone and were generated to the current player level
  • Loot generation was changed
    • In Re-Reckoning loot generation rules are altered so that you will more often get items that fit your characters skillset. Loot is mostly randomly generated but we increased the weights of loot that matches the players skill lineup better and we have a virtual counter that increases the chance of better loot drops when you didn‘t find anything good

I have the game in my amazon digital library. I just tried downloading it and the amazon download keeps timing out. It's probably not on their servers any more. Watching the reviews made me want to load the game up again.

Think I'm still gonna get it and replay the game, if not only for lack of other things coming out over the next couple of weeks. Feeling a little nostalgic after watching these videos.

As long as you know what you're getting, it's still a solid purchase. There aren't many bigger games out there. You could keep busy for months.
Considering the general lack of new games due for the next 8-10 weeks, the timing works.
Does the original have the ability to be played at higher resolutions? With the improvements being kinda sparse, you might be able to play the original for super cheap.

They did some QOL updates around loot tables etc., I'm not concerned about the purchase price. I don't own the original game any longer, so NBD buying it.

Considering Curt Schilling is the biggest douche to walk the planet, no, I won't be buying this remastered POS either, only if I get to go back into DROWs vent and bitch him out.

Damn, it really sucks they couldn't have at least given some extra LOD options or TAA or something. This looks 100% identical to the original PC version at least graphically.

I bought it, have been playing since it launched on Steam earlier. Still an enjoyable game, been long enough that I remember next to nothing about the the story etc. Pretty decent single player WoW like experience.

The original has UI issues above 1080p.

the game itself sounds very good...it's just the 'Remastered' part that people have issues with...graphically it looks basically the same but the QOL improvements alone (FOV slider) might be worth it (along with the new DLC) if you're a fan...it still sounds like a game worth playing

im kinda tempted with the discount. i still have the original installed, i could compare. i wonder if i can transfer my save some how...

108hrs, i think i was at like 80% complete, never did finish it and steam says i havent touched it since dec 2017.

Would buy it if I got a big discount, but I own it on Origin also so they aren't even selling it only renting it if you subscribe to their EAPlay BS. I'll wait for a 60-70% off sale on GoG then buy it then. I am in no rush to play it. IIRC I never finished the original game but got bored at some point and never went back.

It wasn't. I have no idea why it is getting a remaster, it was never a very good game. You can tell that what they were looking to do was make an MMO. There is lots of MMO elements, including the overarching story. Then at some point they clearly decided that was too expensive and shoehorned it in to a single player game. The result is just so very "meh". There are just far too many games that do the kind of thing it does, but much better.

Personally I'd recommend picking up an actual story driven MMO (FF14 would be a good choice) instead of it.

Against my better judgement, I bought the remaster and tried it out. It's not terrible - some stuff like higher res textures do look quite a lot nicer and looks MUCH better in person than watching a Youtube video. However, the one thing I could not stand was that the performance was surprisingly shitty around the small towns/villages/cities. For example, the very first little settlement you run into (Gorhart) would drop my FPS to the upper 50s. By comparison, the original version is 120+. The visual difference doesn't even come close to accounting for such 50% or greater performance loss.
