Zen 3 is rumored to be flaunting monumental IPC gains in early testing

I'm in the same boat, I've been itching to upgrade my 6600k, but just don't have a need.

I think a ryzen 4600x or 4700x may be in my future with next gen consoles near release.

Im going 4700x for sure. With the consoles being 8 core 16 thread that seems to be the way to go. At least you can still get a decent amount for your 6600k on the used market to help cover a little of the upgrade cost.

the 3700X is also a great deal for those who can't wait...8 core is definitely the minimum you want to get as a gamer for a new system upgrade...I'm torn between waiting for Zen 3 or just getting a 3700X and calling it a day (that way I still have the option to get a Zen 3 CPU in a year or 2 and can just plug it into my mobo)

With the new stuff being so close to coming out I’d suggest waiting. If you have a pc that can hold you over that is.
I’ll rock the old i5 3570k rig til I find a deal on something. It’s got 16gb ram, 1tb ssd and a 2060 super and it plays dead by daylight just fine which is my most played game.

At this point the only thing that would make me upgrade is a $200 3700x or if the 4700x has at least 10% IPC improvement. I’ve got a X470 max board, 32gb ram, 2tb of ssd and a Corsair rm850 in a Lian li pc 011 case just chilling next to my desk.

Im in no rush and have $1k saved to blow but it’s gotta be worth it. I’ll probably grab a 3070 gpu and a 4700x and call it a day, who knows.

I got impatient and ended up order 2 3700x's. Got them when they came down to $260 and $270 respectively, one was with ac Valhalla which i was going to get for my son anyways, so ended up $210 for the second one (bought the first one 2 weeks before the promotion, lol). Anyways, I'll see what zen3 has to offer, I'm not against upgrading another PC or passing one of these down to my wife or other kids. I have 6 desktops at the house, so buy a PC part means lots of moving parts around and upgrades for more than just one box, lol. If zen3 is 20-25% faster than my 3700x in the same power levels I may jump on it still, l although I think I'd be better served with a GPU update at this point. (I mostly do dev work/compiling, some blender and VR development, some transcoding for my Plex stuff. Barely play games anymore besides things like Minecraft with the kids on our home server).

Looking forward to AMD pushing their high-core count CPUs to be competitive in single-threaded stuff as well versus the competition. That'd be a great counterpart for Big Navi or Ampere!

waiting for this release very impatiently! Very interested in seeing what the 4950x will do compared to my prior 3950x... Sold off all my intel stuff to wait for this new tech to arrive in our hands. RTX3090 and 4950x should make me happy for a short while.

Just like AMD came roaring back in the CPU dept. They are in gpu as well. Yet everyone is saying "oh what a failure NAVI 2 is and how it wont come close to 3000 series".

Have we forgotten what you just said about AMD? You said it perfectly. Thus I cant wait to see what these Zen 3 chips can achieve as well as Big Navi.

I think so too. 5700XT and 5700 were untouchable performance wise for their price. Even if AMD can’t take the crown them having a high end competitor with aggressive pricing only helps us consumers.

I currently have a Ryzen 5 3600 with DDR4-3600 and PBO turned on. It works decently. Really hoping to get an 8 core single CCX Zen 3 if IPC is much better. If not, this works good enough...
 
I'm waiting eagerly on Zen 3 as a gaming destop upgrade. Been playing a lot of Far Cry 5/ND where the game is CPU limited even at 1440p w/ my 1080Ti. I currently have a Ryzen 5 3600 with DDR4-3600 and PBO turned on. It works decently. Really hoping to get an 8 core single CCX Zen 3 if IPC is much better. If not, this works good enough...
sooooo, when i had my 3950x @ 4.6ghz ccd0 4.5Ghz ccd1 FC5 @ 2560x1080 would avg 110ish fps with my 2080Ti... I sold off that cpu/motherboard combo and switched to an Intel 10900k @ 5.3ghz and FC5 was the only game that I play most often (I love the arcade) sky rocketed to 160-200+ FPS.. That game really loves Intel arch for whatever reason. I then at that point capped the game to my monitors refresh rate @ 144 and the smoothest game play ive ever seen, up until it would eventually crash to desktop cause unstable OC LOL! I say all that to come to this.... I hope AMD changed the ccx's, ccd's, and mem controller to make that platform just a little easier to OC on and get better FCLK speeds, then at that point it will be just an insane platform.... I personally, like i said in my above post am very excited to see what the new 4950x cpu will perform like.

Yeah that game doesn't scale past 4 threads. What kind of framerates are you seeing at 1440P? From what I remember when the benchmarks came out on Far Cry 5 that a 1700X + 1080TI was still GPU limited at 1440P.

Well, currently playing ND right now and I'm seeing: 77-120 or so. Typically anything under 85fps won't show more than about 65-75% gpu usage (under GPU-Z) on my 1080Ti in ultra with AA off. probably 89-105 fps is most typical.
 
I agree dev I think the 8 core 16 thread is gonna be the sweet spot for gamers because of the latency reduction of the single ccx. Cant wait to see how it affects single/low thread count apps , benches and temps.

Yeah, I am excited after seeing the 3300x vs 3100, figure we can at least expect that much performance % gains which would bring some of the higher core count (3700x, I'm looking at you) CPUs closer to Intel offerings.
 
Do we have a date yet? I've got $700 burning a hole in my pocket right now and I so desperately need an upgrade. 2600k has been running strong for many years but it bottlenecks the 2070 and I can feel the sluggishness in many newer titles.

not that i've seen but i'd assume we'll see something before the end of the month with limited launch in october or november. we'll see though because they definitely need to launch before thanksgiving(US).
 
I’m really torn; I waited on buying my new workstation cpu and mobo because I have hardline and couldn’t be bothered doing it twice with new gen graphics coming, now with ampere imminent I’m stuck in that trap I always laughed at people for. Do I just wait, if zen 3 TR gets announced on schedule in November I’m gonna be pissed if I build in October. Keeping it for 5 years so the IPC and Hz bump would be nice. But waiting is dumb.

Even so I’m tempted to just stick my new card in on air and see if there’s an announcement before holidays.

There are definite annoyances about this new low leak AMD
 
zen 3 TR likely won't see the light of day until march or april.. other than initial launch dates their time spans between launches within series has been very consistent.

1800x launched April 2017, TR 1950x launched August 2017 (4 months)
2700x launched April 2018, TR 2950x launched August 2018 (4 months)
3800x launched July 2020, TR 3970x launched November 2020 (4 months)

rest is up to you to decide if it's worth waiting or not. given black Friday and Christmas is coming up chances of getting a 3960/70 at a steep discount might be worth it.

They’ve already dropped a bit, could be supply picking up, could be dollar shift. The money doesn’t matter that much, but hassle has a real price, hence why I’m looking at such a long life. I kinda need to let ‘build’ go and just pay someone as I don’t have time but I can’t

Anyway timing is a fair point, I’ve been putting a bit much stock in the roadmap. I should just do it. It’s not like I actually need the extra performance, and if it were that much difference that it makes a qualitative difference (unlikely, especially for me) it *should* work on the existing motherboards and I can just replace it. (Fuck those mobo prices) Dunno why I’ve had this commitment problem, never had before.

I also suspect they’ll be running it on that same schedule just because they want Milan out and there’s _massive_ demand from market for it. Whereas previously Epyc was still getting traction. Genesis Peak only really makes sense after Milan given the relative return and likely lack of capacity.

You're also not looking at product lines. I didn't use numbers because specificity will get mired down in the details we don't, can't, and shouldn't have. 10% of a fab's production like TSMCs is still a lot of dies. Further, Nvidia parts tend to be smaller for the same level of performance on the same node for gaming (since the Steam survey was referenced), at least up to Turing with extra core types mixed in; but AMD will have to do much the same with RDNA2, so that trend is likely to continue.

Ergo, Nvidia is making more dies per wafer than AMD, just comparing GPU lines, and each percent of production goes further for Nvidia.

So the question that your guess alludes to as to whether that remaining 10% is enough for Nvidia still stands. We don't (and again, can't, and shouldn't) have hard numbers, but it does stand to reason that since AMD is trying to supply the market that Intel is now undersupplying, they're going to demand more production from TSMC, however, as a matter of percentages of volume, this doesn't really shine any light on how TSMCs other customers are affected. Particularly since we don't know what their current allocations are, nor what they are planning, nor the effect of capacity increases in 7nm production will result in the number of wafers that each percent of production actually represents.


Also, given that Nvidia essentially makes more money per product than AMD and that Nvidia dominates the GPU market, especially the high-end GPU market for consumers and businesses, I'd expect TSMC to have whatever capacity that Nvidia thinks they need dutifully set aside. After all, Nvidia has been a much more reliable customer.

Looks like you were all wrong and I was right. TSMC did not have the capacity Nvidia needed and they went Samsung as they were late to the table. Of course I expect you to spin it rather then just admit you got it wrong after you get back from your vacation.
 
My goal to meet -----> Obtain 4950x and a RTX3090 by Feb. This should be obtainable, i know stock is gonna be terrible on both items for the first few months, but come Feb, I need my FarCry6 PC ready!

This is one of those posts that are really hard to believe with respect to a 3950 vs. 10900. It goes against all sorts of facts. But, whatever, sounds like you are happy and that's important. Will be interesting to see the next AMD series.

looking at some certain articles the other day, you might want to return that 3600 ram, cause it looks like we might be able to do 4133+ 1:1 on zen3... and you know how important mem bandwidth is on that plat.....

I just bought 2 3700x's in the last 2 months. I'm impatient and figured worst case if zen3 is that compelling, I can just sell one or put it in one of the family/kids boxes and buy a 4700x or w/e is the best for my use case ;).

I read something last week that says we may not be getting 8C single CCX 4XXX series CPUs. Don't know if true, but I'm hoping it's a BS rumor.

I haven't heard anything about it. I guess it's possible they could give us 2 CCX's that only have 4 cores each? That seems like this could be a 4700(x) and a single CCX with 8 cores could be a 4800x giving an ACTUAL reason to buy the 4800x over the 4700x. Other than that, it would be slightly disapointing, but if the performance is there and the price is right, I don't care how it comes. If they have a single CCX with all 8 cores and it doesn't hit the clocks to make a 4950x... what else would they do with it? Disable 1/2 the cores and throw it in a 4800x? Seems they would rather just sell it as a single CCX chip with slightly lower clocks... that'd be cheaper than interposing 2 CCX's together.

I haven't opened the memory yet and have a month to return it...4133 is a pretty big jump from the current sweet spot of 3600...I want it to be true but also don't want to return my new G.Skill (it's Samsung B-Die)

as long as its a decent bin of b-die, 4133 shouldnt be an issue @ say something like 18-18-18-38 for starters @ 1.4+ Vdimm.. i'd keep what you have
 
I heard Zen 3 will have between 10-20% IPC gains for single threaded performance tasks, and as much as 10% when all cores are loaded.
Supposesdly this is in large part due to the fact Zen 3 has 8 cores per CCX now where Zen 2 maxed out at 4. As well

So what I don’t fully understand is how the majority of IPC increase comes from having 8 cores per CCX vs 4 on Zen 2. L3 cache has apparently remained the same, so are the improvements in IPC (mostly) due to the fact the L3 cache isn’t split anymore between 2x4 core CCX’s, rather its unified now?
