CONTROL (Remedy)

I'm really hoping for the next generation of video hardware to really kick tail, I want to play this but my trusty 1080ti can't handle the fancy effects and I'm a graphics whore.

Control Expansion 2 AWE - Announcement Trailer

Alan Wake!...releasing August 27th...

"Over the years, we have included Easter eggs in our games that related some of Remedy’s games to each other, as you have seen if you played Control…but what if they were not all just Easter eggs?"..."What if there’s actually been a plan in place for over a decade on how some of our games are connected—a Remedy Connected Universe, if you will—and payoff for certain things is… down the line?"

Been waiting, didn't bother with the last DLC. Will play them together. Will be able to play with RTX on with DLSS 2.0 I think, so that will be the first game I try the tech on. Game already looked good so I'll see how this is.

Cool, can't wait for your impressions. DLSS is one of those items that could really change the game with good implementation.

The next 'Remedy Connected Universe' game is already in development

"For over 10 years, we’ve had a crazy dream. The idea that the tales told in some of our games would be connected to each other, a connected world of stories and events with shared characters and lore," Lake wrote..."Each game is a stand-alone experience, but each game is also a doorway into a larger universe with exciting opportunities for crossover events"...

I want this game, but will probably wait for next gen graphics cards first

Man, it's hard to follow the turncoats that are remedy. I thought they were still with microsoft, but now it's actually 505 games the lords of epic store exlusivity deals.

Steam says it's coming in august, but it doesn't even have a price listing up yet. When in august?

Honestly that sounds like it could be really cool. To be able to play some character in some storyline that moves through all their games, and to be able to re-visit games like Max Payne.

Last DLC is August 27th, so I assume it will come out around then with everything.

Remedy broke away from from Microsoft thankfully. I liked Alan Wake and Quantum Break, but MS was stifling Remedy by forcing Xbox exclusives. Ironically, after Remedy left MS now puts games on PC to.

I wanted to pick it up during the Epic sale but my coupon was used up.
So Tim S. have another Sale for the hell of it called the End of Summer sale in two weeks or so.

Finally getting it's proper and long awaited Steam release in the form of an Ultimate Edition, August 27.

$39.99 for the base game and both expansions.
Where is that price from? Steam shows no price yet.

Control Ultimate Edition- An Explanation
https://controlgame.com/ultimateeditioncommunityblog/

Last week, alongside information about the upcoming AWE expansion for Control, we also released information about Control Ultimate Edition – a Control package featuring The Foundation and AWE expansions, coming to current and next gen consoles, as well as PC.

We spent several months exploring all of our launch options for Control Ultimate Edition and no decision was taken lightly. While it is challenging bringing any game to next gen platforms, we quickly realised it was even more difficult to upgrade our current user base to next gen with full parity across platforms with our year-old game.

Every avenue we pursued, there was some form of blocker and those blockers meant that at least one group of players ended up being left out of the upgrade for various reasons. As of today, we can’t offer an upgrade to everyone, and leaving any one group out feels unfair. We understand that is not what you want to hear.

Understandably, there are still some questions about what this means for those that already own Control on current gen consoles and we hope to clear this up.

Will I be able to purchase the Control base game on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, without the additional content?
No. The only version of Control available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will be Control Ultimate Edition.

However, if you have the Control base game, the Expansion Packs or the Season Pass on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One in your collection, you will still be able to play 100% of your game and enjoy an enhanced experience through backwards compatibility.

Does this mean the Season Pass won’t be available to purchase separately on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X?
Correct. All content featured will be available as part of Control Ultimate Edition. The original base game, Expansion Packs and Season Pass will not be sold separately on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X.

I own the Control base game and Season Pass. Is this not the same as Control Ultimate Edition?
The objective of Control Ultimate Edition was not to release new exclusive content on the next gen platforms, but to offer the full Control gameplay experience to new Control players in a single, easy-to-find product. The PlayStation 5/Xbox Series X versions of Control contain the same content as the current gen game, though they do take full advantage of the power and features provided by these new consoles.

The upgrade path that we are offering is only possible when upgrading from the same version of the game. As we are only doing additional development on Control Ultimate Edition on the next gen platforms, we are unfortunately unable to offer an upgrade path to all existing Control players. We understand how this might upset a number of players but you will still be able to play the 2019 edition of Control and each Expansion on the new platforms.

Is Control backwards compatible with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X?
Absolutely! Owners of the original edition of Control on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One can enjoy backwards compatibility when next gen systems launch.

In conclusion…
To bring Control to next generation consoles in any form, we had to make some difficult decisions and those came in the form of creating the simplified Control Ultimate Edition product plan we have today.

That we took a while in responding does not mean we have not been listening. We are sorry we couldn’t meet everyone’s expectations and we hope you will continue to support Control. We thank you for your support thus far.

So I played around with DLSS in this game. My relevant specs:

RTX 2070
AMD 3700X
16GB RAM
SSD

Running all other settings at max, 2560x1440. These is what I see:

With no DLSS and no RTX, I get around 55 frame rates.
DLSS On, RTX off, I get around 85 frame rates.
DLSS On, RTX (all settings) I get around 50 frame rates.
DLSS Off, RTX (all setting) I get around 30 frame rates.

Frame rate obviously depends on the area, some places I got notably higher frame rates but these results are from the main executive room as it is simple to find/fast travel to. I find this area shows a notable frame rate drop compared to other rooms.

DLSS seems to have some visual issues. Namely, light reflections on surfaces like floors. With DLSS off it looks normal, and stays still unless you start panning the camera which will change how you view a certain reflection/scattering of the light. With DLSS on, it is constantly scattering. Like running water. It is certainly noticeable and doesn't look very natural. Will you notice this in actual game play? Doubtful. DLSS in Death Stranding seems to reduce water quality in the distance in my experience, read an article which has screen shots showing that happen in that game so DLSS isn't perfect.

Back to Control, I can't see much else aside from that. The frame rate increase is very high. Consider it sacrificing some minor visual fidelity for a huge performance jump, same as all other graphical settings. Considering my net gain was enabling all RTX graphics, one small visual setback and a 5 frame rate drop, I'd say it was worth it and played through the first DLC with RTX settings enabled. Just another tool to give you a huge frame rate boost with comparatively little sacrifice. I'd say I am impressed so far with it.

As for the first DLC, it was more of the same. Didn't find the story too enthralling but more of the same which wasn't bad. I'm hoping the 2nd DLC has a stronger story which I suspect it might have.

With Death Stranding I'd say the visual impact was larger because there are lots of rivers to see and the draw distances are far. My frame rates were higher in the game but I just left DLSS on for the whole play through. Might revisit that and check the frame rates with DLSS on/off.

Ultimate edition is $32 on Steam now until Sept 8th. Guess I'll finally pick it up now.

Picked it up this morning. I’m really enjoying it so far! Which is nice, because I haven’t been into most of the bigger (as in AAA style) games I’ve played lately. I’m running on a 2070 Super, and it flies with most RTX settings maxed and DLSS on. I only play at 1080, so no surprise there I guess, but the game is beautiful. Glad I picked it up.

I'm on a 2080 at 3440x1440. Hoping with DLSS and RTX on I'll still be able to stay over 60 at least. Based on Flogger's report above on a 2070 at 1440p proper, it seems I'll be close to that.

I beat the original game on Epic game store and can get the season pass for under $10 with the coupon. Is there anything I am missing out on by not getting the Ultimate version on Steam?

So it's my first time playing this game and I'm enjoying it so far, but it has a surprisingly simple gameplay loop. I've read that it's sort of a Metroidvania in a way, since there are places that are locked off for one reason or another that you'll come back to later. However it's mostly been doors with clearance 1... clearance 2... clearance 3... etc. All of the collectible documents are written on the exact same type of paper with the same font and everything (minor complaint obviously, but it just feels like low effort.)

Oh, and the loot system with weapon and personal mods sucks. They should have ditched that whole system in favor of a more expanded skill tree. It falls into that trap many of these systems do where you just scrap 95% of the loot you find since most of it's useless.

I'm almost done with ME2 and I'm debating whether to play Control or Ghost of Tsushima next. I'm leaning towards Control. How puzzle heavy is control?

Nice find! Tempted to grab it at that price....but is there any risk it will get bundled with Ampere GPUs given the RTX features? Probably unlikely given its no longer that new.

If anything I'd think they would bundle CyberPunk. But that's unlikely to happen at the GPU launch, anyway, they usually do that like a month later.

Just picked it up on Steam, going to lazily play thru it and enjoy the graphics :)
