5700XT driver situation August 2020

Afterburner fan console doesn't work (unless the driver from yesterday fixed it, haven't tried).

However, you can set the fan profile in the AMD settings and that works fines.

Does AMD have an FPS overlay like nvidia does? It seems like it may have used to but I can't find it...

I've been battling the 5700 XT I got pre-COVID lockdown since I got it. Nothing but crashes on multiple driver revisions and many variations of settings enabled or disabled.

Currently trying underclocking while overvolting and NOTHING enabled including Freesync which kind of defeats the point.

settings>general enable on-screen in-game overlay

ddu and try todays drivers.

I still don't see a place to show FPS. My overlay only shows hardware metrics :(
fps is at the very top of the overlay box but only in games that will allow an overlay. some dont work right. you can also flip this to force it on then run a game or even something like heaven and youll see the fps popup.

Brand new build? Sounds like the 5700xt is defective or you have another issue causing instability (ram, cpu etc)

Make sure to do DDU safe mode, and uninstall both AMD and Nvidia drivers if they are still there.

Also, RAM timings can cause crashing (even on previously working builds). Set the RAM to default (should be 2133) and see if that helps.

Fresh Windows with 8/17 drivers, still crashing randomly. Gotta be the card itself but I think it's too late at this point for return and pretty sure I have no receipt.

I have had a few people I recommended making sure their ram is stable and bamn when they actually checked it was unstable and bluescreening during games. I think when people load games and the ram is unstable it blue screens and it is automatically assumed its the video card. One of the reasons I check if my ram is stable.

And it's great because analyzing BSOD dumps when your memory is causing game crashes will throw up error flags in gpu drivers and d3d. Naturally, one is lead to assume something is wrong with gpu hardware/software.

ran a 5700 flashed to XT for months and months, zero issues. I liked the radeon software better than nvidia too. i ended up getting 2070 super and selling the 5700, because my 2019 OLED C9 only supported gsync.

Mine is in the box waiting to ship tomorrow. I sold it for $300. I’ve had it since February and have had nothing but issues with the shit amd drivers.
When the card works right performance is amazing, unfortunately I haven’t had the best of luck with amd drivers. I found a rtx 2060 super locally for $250 I’ll use that til the new stuff drops then go from there

That's extremely disappointing to read.
I've for the most part, stayed clear of most cards since AMD took over ATI.
It seems the Canadians knew a thing or two about how to properly build a graphics card and drivers.
Maybe AMD should hand it back to them, if after all this time...they can't get their act together.
The ATI Radeon 9700 and 9800 Pro cards offered lots of performance and stability in the time I owned them.
AMD's hardware is very well built, so why the heck are they having such a hard time getting a 'handle' on the drivers?
It makes no sense to me.
Why is driver development not close to...or at the top of the list of things needing attention?
The management have got to know by now about the many complaints robbing them of market share.
Though Nvidia are not perfect themselves, they're already established as the leader in graphics hardware...like it or not.
People equate the name with high-speed GPUs that simply work for the most part. It is all about perception.
AMD will continue to live in the shadows...unless the 'niggling' driver issues get resolved...resulting in consumer confidence.

All it takes is a significant increase in the software development and test teams. But AMD is really a hardware manufacturer first and foremost.

In very broad terms, generalizing a lot, hardware companies are lousy in software, and they see software as just something to "give away" to sell the hardware. And software companies are lousy with hardware, because they don't usually realize how hard it is to design, test, and manufacture hardware in volume and at low cost. I'm sure that people will respond with examples of the exceptions, and I will in advance agree that are there exceptions. So I'll name one here: Apple. But I think that AMD is your typical hardware company.

Speaking from career experience here.

Had my reference 5700 XT since September 2019. Experienced constant freezes and crashes when playing games like Warhammer 2 and Witcher 3. After some troubleshooting I determined it was the Radeon Overlay that I was using to monitor temps, clock speeds, and framerate. Haven't crashed/froze since I've stopped using the overlay.

I’ve tried the overlay on and off, all the random anti lag, chill, ris on and off. I’ve spent a ton of time trying to get this to work and have had nothing but issues. Put my buddies gtx 1080ti in my pc and didn’t have a single issue for the week he let me borrow it. Hence me going back to nvidia.
I know I’m losing performance going with the 2060 super but as long as it works all the time I am happy.
Hell I really don’t need to upgrade to next gen cards at all, I only play siege and dead by daylight most of the time. Siege will run on a potato and DBD is so unoptimized it doesn’t really matter.

Yeah, I guess I'm just luckier in that regard to have a relatively easy environmental issue. We're about a month away from being a full year of ownership and I still haven't tried to run any overlays since. I do have a 2070 SUPER in my daily driver now and moved the 5700 XT to my wife's gaming machine in November 2019. The plan is to get us both on Nvidia GPUs (and AMD Ryzen CPUs) by the end of the year just to simplify support and maintenance.

Seeing software as something to 'give away' in a bid to sell hardware isn't a bad thing.
If that software is to be used in a critical support role and isn't doing it's job...then they may as well pack up and go home.
It won't ever inspire consumer confidence and they will buy less product.
If AMD ever wants to be a serious player in the GPU market, they'll have to 'bite-the-bullet' and hire good driver developers.
When they were a small struggling company looking at every nickel to stay in the game, most people were accepting.
Now....not so much.

Agree. Now AMD has to decide if it wants to run with the big dogs, meaning nVidia and Intel soon enough. Intel actually has a reputation for high quality compilers.

Does anyone have an idea when the "AMD has bad drivers" thing started?

I don't recall hearing that in the old days, seems somewhere along they lost their way.

The situation is weird. I had a rx580 and running the non adrenaline drivers I never had a issue. So when the time came I got a rx5700. I had nothing but issues and returned 28 days later.

When I returned that card everyone said the driver issues got fixed in the last update. I bought a new pulse 5700xt and it worked fine for a week. I got swamped at work and didn’t use the pc for almost 2 weeks. Then I went on vacation for 10 days.

I came back home and was using the pc and started having all sorts of bsod, black screen with sound still, lock ups forcing me to restart. Upon restart the fan profile was gone like it never saved. So I would do that again and make sure I saved it. Crash and restart again then no profile.

The stock profile was terrible and I adjusted it in the amd software and in afterburner. The problem was running afterburner would make cod warzone crash every time so I couldn’t use afterburner.

I messed with the card for months. I bought it in feb and it would be fine for a while like a week or so the. Random crashes. Sent the card back to sapphire and they replaced it. Got the new card in and it was doing the same shit. Had to of been drivers.

I started pc gaming on a 8800gt so I’ve been doing it for quite a while. I tried endless hours of trouble shooting and got fed up and sold it for $300

I think the first AMD card I used for a while was the 280X and never had any issues.

I've also owned the RX 480, 470, and 560 and I don't recall any major problems. I did have some glitches with Crossfire, but multi-GPU is problematic across the board, so I won't hold that against AMD.

Also used Vega 64 in Crossfire (had some OpenGL issues and microstutter but otherwise working). And a Radeon VII that was perfect with no problems (machine is still working, I gave it to my brother).

And even with the 5700 XT, it was fine at first, and I didn't update drivers for a while (since I don't use that computer much), and the problems only started recently with the black screens and Afterburner problems.

So it seems the major problems have been recent, like this year. I think AMD can fix things, and I hope they do soon, because it is really hurting their image.

7770, 7770x2. 280x, 470, 580 - absolutely zero issues.
rx 5700- was fine at first all fall 2019, then issues with new 2020 drivers but has been fine since march, i think. currently on 20.8.1 without an issue. i thought i was having issues last week, green screens, but turned out it was windows update's nic drivers.

I hated having these issues. When everything played nice the card kicked ass at 1080p ultra and 1440p high settings. I downgraded my card to have stable performance. After all these issues idk if I can buy another amd card. Their cpus are awesome and the video cards are great bang for your buck but the software issues were horrendous.

Ive heard of people having issues with nvidia but I personally haven’t ever since the 8800gt, so I’ll stick with team green from now on. So far this 2060 super has been chugging along great and I got it for pretty cheap so I’m happy

downgraded to which driver version?

downgraded to which driver version?
I downgraded my card from 5700xt to 2060 super.
For drivers on the 5700xt I tried at least 10 different versions and finally gave up. I won’t buy an amd video card again after this

I see, thanks for the insight

My 5600xt works great. Only issue is if I enter sleep mode and awaken the machine the fan profiles get flattened and the card is allowed to run towards 90 degrees. I have to manually reaplly the profile. If I never let machine sleep its fine.

I don't know when it started to be an issue because I was "out of the game" for some years. I had less issues back in the day forcing CrossFire on cards that weren't supposed to and running custom BIOS/pencil mods etc than I am having with the 5700 XT :(

I have my Ryzen 7 3700x /RX 5700 parked and been enjoying the Ryzen 3 3100/ Rx 5500 XT combo other then my bad game play ..

So I have a chance to pick up a 5700XT sapphire locally for $315, going to do it to hold me over until 3xxx nvidia cards hit.

However, I have heard that lots of the early problems with the Navi cards is based on the drivers, not the card itself.

So how's everyone's experience with the latest AMD drivers and 5xxx series cards? Anything I need to know beforehand?

I've not used an AMD card in forever, so unfamiliar with driver quirks or weird behaviors.

System: 10900K, windows 10.

Thanks.
I've heard it works great with a newer kernel (Linux). Not sure under Windows.

What software you set the fan curve with?

I don't use Linux unfortunately
