Multiple questions Re: CPU temp, fan speeds, UEFI settings

Good morning gurus. I have a handful of questions on my new system.

System build (Newegg link)

1. Put together a machine with a Ryzen 5 3600 sitting in an ASRock B550 Phantom Gaming 4, using stock AMD cooler. I have the stock fan in the Phanteks P300 in the rear, and two CM 140mm fans that I transferred from old system in the front doing intake, and feel my temps are too high. Temps are only 1-3 degrees cooler with the side-panel off.

Temps for CPU are showing 70-80 in BIOS after a few minutes.

CPU-Z usually reports 3592ghz which is what I expect, bouncing briefly higher to 4091 every few seconds as I type and download over Battle.net client. Is this normal boost behavior? Windows Task Manager shows 4.03ghz continually.

I already got scared and re-seated and re-pasted the stock cooler using a bit of a different paste application (I usually do a pea in the middle, this time I did an X as AMD advised).

After a while I read Ryzen Master software shows an accurate temp reading, so I installed that. I am not touching any settings. The CPU Clock Speed says 4,113 current and 4,200 maximum while on default setting. Also CPU voltage shows 1.377v but goes up to ~1.45 while I'm noodling around.

I have an old Hyper 212 Evo from 2015, but I read I may have to order a bracket for the AM4 compatibility? I wonder if this will be free or if I should order the whole new cooler (budget is tight now).

2. By default, the fans are all set to Silent mode, and the three chassis fans are set to monitor M/B (which seems to stay cool). The chassis fans are all hovering around 500rpm at this setting. I can get them to spin faster (at least according to the UEFI, though I don't hear them spinning faster) if I change it to monitor CPU, or change to standard rather than silent. Temps still stay at the same level though. The CPU fan reports ~1900rpm

How should they be set?

3. The motherboard had sockets for CPU power - 8-pin & 4-pin. I plugged power into both of them. Is that neccessary if I am not overclocking, and could that be leading to higher temps? If only one is necessary, which one?

Well if you can live with temps and don't want to mess with it you should be fine with stock heatsink. Personally I like a quiet system, so you can keep the bios fan setting to silent, or you can setup a custom fan curve to say go faster after 70c, and even break up based on which fan. It may take trial and error, but load up a stress test, make from CPU and the gpuz test to see were your max temps get to?

Is that 70C at idle or under some load? Yeah, re-seating is normally recommended when you are having odd temperature issues with an AMD system, so looks like you've tried that already. If your MB and VRM's are staying cool, then you should be fine with your case fans especially if increasing fan speeds made no difference in temperatures, I imagine you have enough cooling (what GPU do you have?). 1.45v is normal if it's just a single core clocking up. With the new power plans the CPU's tend to stay at higher frequencies, you can try balanced power plan and see if you like it better.

For the CPU power, MOST MB's say you only need to plug one 4-pin in if you aren't overclocking, but if your PSU has both and your MB has both, plug them both in. This will have ZERO effect on temperature, it just ensures there is enough power AVAILABLE, it's up the system/cpu on how much of this power it USES. So, leave it plugged in .

It's normally under heavy loads to hit 85*C+ on a stock cooler (at least for my 3700x it does, and i've heard similar for other CPUs). They don't throttle until 95*C, so as long as you're not hitting over 90*C often, you're fine. If you don't like higher temps you can get a new bracket for your 212, not sure how big a difference the stock 3600 cooler is compared to the 212 (I think the 212 is similar to the 3600x cooler, well, there were many revisions of the 212, so it's hard to say exactly?)

Also to note, what kind of ambient temperatures do you have? They can have a big difference as well.

tl;dr: He's running around 85*C under load with idle around 46*C (and you can see as more cores ramp up his voltage goes down) on stock cooler. After installing the 212 he is sitting closer to 65*C under load and 37*C idle. So, you can imagine that it should do similar for you, about 15* difference under load possibly, but really hard to say as there are a lot more things that can affect it.

Is that 70C at idle or under some load?

That was 70+ in the bios idling. In windows I idle around 38-40 now. Hovers around 50 if I'm scrolling or whatever. Temps still high if i am under heavy load but it's been stable. I only hit 95 when I run cinebench or something similar.

Thanks for the tip on the CPU power cables. I'll leave them both in.

My ambient temps are around 65-80 depending on the weather. My other temps in the case seem normal.

Sorry I did not reply sooner, I got lost in researching and tweaking. I will have to pick up another EVO cooler, I'd be a lot happier with temps in the 65 under load range!
