Ghost of Tsushima

Why does everyone say it's not like AC, when I can clearly see it is exactly like AC?
That is not a negative in of itself, I enjoyed the combat in AC: Odyssey, and this seems exactly the same, almost to a letter, including the ability upgrades.

Game looks amazing and I intend to buy it. But holy hell the facial animations and eye movements (or lack thereof) really show how far ahead TLoU 2 is in that realm

Yeah, the main character seems to lack a lot of emotion in general too and from the couple reviews I've watched, the lip syncing is completely off when using the Japanese dub.

I have to admit, Ghost of Sushiroll or whatever its called looks amazing. If it wasn't so late in the console's life cycle, I'd pick up a PS4 just to play it.

Meh, for the price a 2TB NVME drive, you can get a new PS4 or used/on sale Pro probably. They're so cheap and considering the PS5 will be at least twice the cost and how many other great exclusives are $20 or less now, it's a killer value if you can get over the PCMR/120+ Hz gaming mindset.

I really want to play Tsushima but I'm going to resist the temptation and wait for the PS5...zero point in buying a used PS4 Pro now when the PS5 will be a huge jump in performance and visuals (ray-tracing)...plus Tsushima and LoU2 seem like it'll be better with the PS5 features

If I didn't have a PS4 Pro already, I'd definitely wait for PS5 also.

The animations don't look bad per-say, but yeah. I'd imagine Sucker Punch wasn't quite given the same budget as Naughty Dog was.

Man the samurai Ghosts of Tushytasting on the PS4Pro looks seriously AMAZING HDR on the CX!
I wish we could get that game on PC, dang consoles and their 30fps lol

‘Ghost Of Tsushima’ Is Blowing Away My Expectations So Far (Forbes review)

There are some games I look forward to for years or months and know I’m going to play for a week straight when they launch. But there are other games that are more of a coin flip as to whether I’ll cover them at all. While I always thought Ghost of Tsushima looked somewhat interesting, I had skipped Sekiro and Nioh and didn’t know if I’d get around to this, which seemed somewhat similar.

Past that, while I have liked the Infamous series from Sucker Punch, it’s not exactly one of my favorite PlayStation originals, so hearing them shifting to a samurai game didn’t seem super interesting to me initially.

Well, I was wrong.

After a full day of play, Ghost of Tsushima is surpassing every expectation I might have had for it, and is rapidly turning into one of my favorite games of the year, if not perhaps one of my favorite PlayStation originals this generation, though I’ll need to make it to the end to declare that for sure...

For those of you who bought it, how are you liking it so far?
I was about to ask the same thing. Somehow I'd trust the opinion more of actual players than "pro" reviews. Especially after the TLOU2 debacle. I don't trust any one of them, not the journos, and not the youtubers, even more so than before.

This is my personal GOTY as of right now. CP2077 is going to have to be extremely special to surpass this game for me. Honestly, Sucker Punch has a masterpiece on their hands. They’ve taken the best parts of recent open world games like The Witcher 3, AC Odyssey, and RDR2, streamlined it, and placed it in the most beautiful game world I’ve ever seen.

Edit: My only regret is that I wish I could play the game at 60fps. It actually runs at a pretty solid 30 on PS4 pro with very few dips. Tests have shown that favoring FPS keeps the game at 30 but it never goes above that. It eliminates any dipping, but it’s rare enough that it’s recommended to just favor resolution. A PS5 or PC version of the game running at 60 FPS or higher would be a sight to behold.

Still waiting for my Amazon disc to arrive :( But this is good news if what you say holds up. It's really a shame these talented game devs are forced to make great games on such shit hardware.. Why they don't release these on PC is beyond me.. Heck id even take 6months to a year later.. Just put it on PC....

I put in a handful of hours over the weekend, I’m definitely enjoying it but it has some weird design oversights. Chiefly the lack of a lock-on, it’s a mostly minor annoyance but when your face buttons are mapped for attacks camera management can get a bit awkward during battle. I feel like the camera likes to try for dramatic side views but the narrow FOV bogs it down.

By no means is it a dealbreaker but it’s definitely an important point to mention. The overall gameplay is very solid though, stand-offs leave you feeling like a true samurai badass. Combat has a good challenge and different stances for different situations. Basically the game feels good to play despite the camera issue. Handholding waypoints are a thing of the past, With a few exceptions, usually when you’re on top of the objective a waypoint may appear. Otherwise you can set a destination and let the wind guide you...or you can go full Zelda Breath of the Wild and just wander aimlessly. While I’m not a fan of BotW it is a decent comparison for the exploration component. This is a world that feels alive and fun to just go wander the island. There aren’t towers to climb and unlock the map or activities, the map is just in a fog of war until you go through the area, quests are given by NPCs as rumors to follow up on or a direct tale that you play through with the NPC

The graphics are fucking gorgeous. It’s Checkerboard 1800p (I believe that’s what DF said) and it has a fantastic eye searing use of HDR. A fantastic contrast of darker areas with the moon or sun glowing off objects. The small niggle is that character animations aren’t to the same quality of Last of Us 2 or Death Stranding, but honestly I don’t even notice. Overall it’s a joy to behold, and for anyone that likes the photo mode this one is even more advanced (and can make short gifs with animated environments as well).

Story wise it’s early to tell but it seems good and well acted, the opening cutscene that introduces the Mongol Khan is well done and shows the sort of internal character and moralities of the enemies in a wonderfully succinct way.

And just a random aside, the voice cast all sound great so far and out of curiosity I looked it up almost entirely cast from Asian-Americans (I don’t want to fully assume they’re Japanese-Americans) so that’s a thing.

Oh and anyone looking to play in Japanese with subtitles apparently the lip sync is off.

I'm bit worried about that bit. My biggest gripe with witcher 3 was that it expected the player to learn certain witcher things by heart. My take on this is that the player character's knowledge should be available to the player for free, without a learning curve. Is there a learning curve, like there are 12 stances and you have to learn which one to use in each specific situation, or can you beat the game by using one or a two stances all the time?

I also heard that the Kurosawa mode while cool is pretty pointless as it removes the best part of the game- the gorgeous colors

It becomes fairly natural once you swap between stances for a couple of hours. The game starts you with only one, and you earn 3 more through playing. That eases you in, so by the time you earn another stance, you are used to the previous ones. You could just use a single stance the whole time if you really wanted, but you'd be missing out on a lot of nuance to the combat system that can make you feel like a real samurai badass. Switching between them is as simple as holding R2 and pressing the corresponding face button, and once you get used to it, it's very simple to weave the changes into your gameplay. One thing you have to realize is that the combat is not meant to be "button spammy." You actually want to be deliberate with your button presses and timing rather than just pressing square and triangle a whole lot. It took me a while to realize that, but it randomly clicked while I was fighing some Mongols the other night. I went from taking a lot of damage to tearing through mobs once it did.

I think I have to wait for a sale, the whole samurai setting is really one of my least favorites.

Three Kingdoms all that stuff is just a cultural shift and doesnt do it for me Sekiro is good though.

It's one of my favorites. I'd play this game if I had a PS4 or if it was available on PlayStation Now.

That’s fair. I’m not huge on samurai settings myself but even so I’m really enjoying the game and setting.

This game is going to put Sucker Punch into Sony’s A tier developer list (a la Naughty Dog). It’s even being praised over in Japan. It’s one of only 4 Western made games to get a perfect score from Famitsu (the biggest game review outlet in Japan). It’s selling so well over there that they are actually having trouble keeping it stocked. That is huge for a Western game. I have a feeling any sequel that gets made is going to have a much larger budget thrown its way.

Well, lol... after 33 hours I've made it out of Izuhara. 100% everything of course, because that is just what I do. I could nit-pick some traversal mechanics, but over all the game is a win in my book.

And Japanese actors added for accurate mocap in 2 languages instead of just one.

I'll have to buy this one eventually... My backlog on PC & PS4 is already miles long. :dead:

I absolutely love open world games, so this is at the top of my list to get in addition to Death Stranding (PC).

I don't understand how anyone with a PS4 who's a fan of gaming can be on the fence about this game...it's getting universal praise...sure it has some faults but the overall gameplay seems like a total win...hearing things on this forum like "I'm burnt out on samurai games" or "is this game good?" is insane...even if you count it as 4 samurai games in 4 years that's a ridiculous argument...4 samurai games in a year OK I can somewhat understand...plus only Sekiro really compares to Tsushima...the same people coming up with excuses why they are not buying Tsushima are the same ones who buy every Assassin's Creed game over the past 10 years lol

go to some of the hard core gaming forums and read people's impressions...read reviews from sites you trust...even if you stick to just [H] everyone here who has played the game also seems to love it...after doing all that the choice is easy...

I tell you how: I was on the fence about the Witcher 3 as well. And when I finally picked it up for like $5 I was really glad I didn't pay more for it, as I didn't like it at all. Not everyone likes the same things. Many of my favorite games were divisive or outright controversial. If something is universally praised it usually means: Safe, not taking any risks. Universal praise is more a red flag than an endorsement. If CP2077 will be universally praised I'll be disappointed.

And no, I didn't buy every AC game, I played the first, didn't like it, then skipped everything until Odyssey, and liked that so I went back to take a look at Origins and found it meh.

I am intrigued by this game and realy like the visuals, but everything I read about it tells me I'm not going to like this game, the reviews I read found the game to be pretty meh, for me it should have been more like uncharted or the last of us, or even like the spiderman/batman type of games, not a souls like open world game.

But to each their own, there need to be games for everyone, this one is not for me and I'm fine with that.

This game is very very far from being a Souls-Like. You may be getting it a bit conflated with Sekiro.

Yeah....this is not a souls-like game by any means. The only thing it has in common with that genre is that it’s a 3rd person action game. Outside of that, they don’t really share much. It’s way more on The Witcher 3 and recent Assassins Creed category than anything.

I haven't fired up my PS4 Pro in a while and I really need a new game to play in a bad way. I love Sucker Punch. I'm looking into it and seriously considering it.

Some of the quibbles I've run across mention parrying and being "meh" on combat at least in the early goings. I'm just trying to get a feel for the combat to make sure I will like it.

Sorry if repeat. I tend to like these videos along with some of the other regulars you all have already posted.

" It’s way more on The Witcher 3 and recent Assassins Creed category than anything. "

That's good news for me.

It is kind of strange when you hear some irrational or seemingly "off base" criticisms about an exceptionally well-crafted game, isn't it

Tsushima is not perfect, there are legit criticisms...same with LoU2...with Tsushima some of the reasons people list for not buying it are ridiculous...they just don't want to buy it for unknown reasons and are making up excuses to justify it...nothing wrong with not liking a game but if you like Sekiro and Nioh it makes zero sense not to buy Tsushima

Ghost of Tsushima becomes PlayStation 4's fastest-selling new franchise

Ghost of Tsushima sold 2.4 million copies in its first three days to become the PlayStation 4's fastest-selling new game not already related to an existing franchise...its tally pushes it past 2017's Horizon Zero Dawn, which accumulated 2.6m over two weeks...before then, 2015's Bloodborne sold 1m copies in a week...

I'm pretty impressed all told. I'm still getting the combat timing down a little bit but other than that? Nice!

Glad to see you’re enjoying it after being on the fence and pulling the trigger.

I think at first for me my mind went a bit to the hack and slash type combat and once I forced myself to slow it down a bit, it’s much more rock paper scissors while waiting for your opponent to leaving an opening.
