Star Wars: Squadrons

You play a white male in life and have played a white male in games your whole damn life as well.
I've said to read the previous post, you still insist on this strawman. If I have a choice I Almost never play as a white male, I want to escape reality not have it reflected back at me from the screen.

How do you simply not understand that hey, maybe POC want to see themselves reflected in a game where they can be a hero, for once? Or any LGBTQ, for that matter?
You can't with a straight face say that POC were excluded from games until recently.
I don't mind if they change up the characters as long as they are well written. Just don't call a game that excludes diverse.

Yes, it's absolutely the companies expanding for diversity to make more money via more appeal but it's also something that should have been done a long time ago.
Are they making more money? Because it seems to me so far all of their attempts at fake diversity resulted in massive backfires, sometimes even from the very people they wanted to pander to.

Opening up a more direct line for people to experience a game, in this instance, as themselves should be welcomed.
I find it hard to believe that someone would not be able to experience a game unless the main character has the same skin color gender and orientation as them.
But I probably don't understand because I'm not a racist/sexist myself. I loved playing as Luis in Ballad of Gay Tony, because I could identify with the character. But I hated playing as Trevor or Michael in GTAV because I couldn't identify with either of them.

I know virtue signaling is an empty buzzword that people cling on to with a death grip but seriously consider why you burst out like this in the first place: they didn't show a white male option in a 5 second character customization screen. You immediately ran to the hills, decrying the game and the agenda, declaring they won't get your money.
I already admitted that my outburst was not meant for this game alone. But I don't take back anything. I loath fake diversity, and I loath political agendas in entertainment. It's purpose is to entertain, not to spread the gospel.
I hope you're as embarrassed by that as I am for you.
Again elevating yourself above me, for virtue. I'm sorry, but virtue signaling is not an empty buzzword when you keep doing it. You should work on your self-awareness.

What is with the white supremacy going on in this forum today? It’s a game about starships shooting lasers at other starships. The pilot is you. Who cares what avatars are being featured! We all know there’s going to be a white male in there, so really just give it up already.

well the media has been doing a pretty bang up job of harping on the race bating, throw in 2020 with lockdowns and riots, and people are going to react.

games should just let you pick, even if its not full customization (which is a waste imho, anything customized looks like a trogolodite compared to the defaults).

You crack me up. You’re the one trying to elevate yourself over everyone else with your buzzwords. Lmao

I’ll pour a beer out for you tonight.

I get it, you have no arguments, and refuse to even address any of mine. Trying to reflect what I've said, really? Zero imagination.
I wouldn't want to continue this here anyway. If you decide you actually want to address the things I've argued like in an intelligent conversation instead of curling up inside an echo chamber go to the soapbox.

Actually, I'm done arguing with an idiot, and I should know better.
And why do you feel like you have to resort to name-calling? Does it make you feel like you're better than everyone? I, personally, love to have discussions on all topics with people who do not have the same viewpoint that I do because then I feel like that is the opportunity to learn something.

Also, it looks like there won't be microtransactions, so fingers crossed!

The trailer doesn't even get into the single player story so expect it to be a boring cliché. At least Battlefront 2's single player looked interesting in the first trailers. Cold weak sauce by EA, again!

Two pages of off topic soapbox arguing notwithstanding (c'mon)... coming off Jedi Fallen Order I find myself more optimistic about this than I could have imagined possible.

I certainly hope so, but JFO was Respawn, by far EA's only great studio.

Everyone should play Titanfall 2 as well, what a great single player FPS (multi was good too).

Sounds good. If the campaign is solid, even if only a 4-6 hour experience, I'm going to strongly consider this. I like Ace Combat 7 multiplayer but it is pretty much dead. I much prefer real aircraft to Star Wars but this will probably be my go to MP game if it ends up being good. A solid campaign is just icing on the cake. Maybe EA is trying hard to undo their screw ups, but I'm prepared to be disappointed.

but they are not all white dudes, and the one chick isn't half naked with giant tits. so this is clearly discrimination against white men and the fault of SJWs who just want to keep god fearing, gun owning, white incels down.

Whoa, hold on there, incels don’t tote guns they dream of having the balls to do so properly.

So what’s with the $40 price? What’s the catch?

But lets try and get back to the game in this thread. I assume there is a catch, and we'll see. Seems too good:

- Campaign
- Multiplayer with no microtransactions
- $40 price

I have a hard time thinking all three can fit into one AAA game with Star Wars royalties. Prove me wrong EA.

$40 merely gets you in the door. I suspect they'll be the standard DLC "Seasons" and you'll have keep up to play online. (or charge for specific craft like DCS does)

I don't see SWG as a typical AAA game. First Person, Cockpit, w/HOTAS and VR support is narrow the potential audience. But I suspect the game's primary audience is everyone that played X-W and TIE 25 years ago.

I can't keep up now with what's been said in here but it looks like there is cross-play support for Xbox One, PS4, PC, and VR.
You'll also earn things like weapons, engines, and shields to deck out your starfighter as you move up the ranks.

I can see that, but I don't think you can go the DCS route. Not at those prices. The level of detail just isn't there to command that price. Maybe $5-7 per ship at best. There are more radar functions in DCS F-18 than there are functions in most entire games so the high price tag and years long development per plane makes sense.

But yes, there has to be some catch. We'll find out soon because release isn't too far off. Lets hope it is something not too bad because this does seem like an interesting game. And yes, a bit of a niche. Vehicle only games are niche even if not simulators.

I got my roommates to preorder copies and we’re starting up a squadron when the game launches. We will not be defeated!!

Im super excited for this game, after Jedi Fallen Order and the revamp on Battlefront 2 I actually trust EA to keep their word about no microtransactions. My rift S is ready, im sure I will get destroyed in multiplayer as I have never been that good at flight games but the single player alone will be amazing and worth it lol.

im hoping we get some kind of Multiplayer vs AI mode for scrubs like me

Granted, it's not going to be priced like a hi-fidelity study sim. But there's *a lot* of ships missing from the preview footage. Where's the B-Wing? Where's the TIE Defender? or even Darth Vader's TIE Advanced?

When you postulate selling access to fly a Millennium Falcon for $20, the $40 entry point sounds less incredulous.

I suppose they might do paid ships (but keep maps/players the same) for different eras. Or as you mentioned, some ships from some alliances as paid. I think the main ones like a B Wing will be included, but extra overlapping ships/roles may be paid.

Considering their claim that the game will have zero microtransactions I dont see it happening, last thing they need to do right now is piss off the Disney fanbase anymore. Maybe an expansion or something down the line though but I think this is going to be one of those games set in the same universe but nothing to do with the main stories so I don't expect to see big tings linked to main movie characters like the falcon.

If Battlefront 2's starfighter combat is any guide, I will be defeated quite easily. Most likely, by star cards and people who have all the time in the world to grind unlocks.

Battlefront 2's space combat is damn good and pretty, especially since it only needs M&KB. HOWEVER, I spent more time waiting for a game to start than playing and the missions could be over in a few minutes which is absurdly short. I'd find myself holding back if my team was winning so the game wouldn't end so quickly and that is not fun.

I liked the combat, but if you weren't grinding for Star Cards early and often, you were screwed. It created a barrier to entry that made it not fun for me. However, you can play the mode now with AI bots and I fire it up every now and then and play all the offline content.

Just picked it up on the last sale, I don't notice the cards having much impact at all.

Last time I played it in multi-player was well over a year ago. There may have been changes to the game that minimized their impact. But I was getting one shot by anything that wasn't an AI and I would hammer on other player Starfighters and do very little damage. Perhaps the game was filled with cheaters or something? I don't know. But this experience was pretty consistent and it seemed like the purple star cards were pretty powerful and that's what people were saying was the issue online at the time.

I hadn't given it much thought after that. I was really good in the starfighter combat mode when the game launched but dropped it a couple weeks in when some other game came out or I got bored, had to work, etc. I picked it up six months later and it was a mess. I've always been pretty good at space combat games like that, so it seemed odd that every match I was getting destroyed right out of spawn almost instantly.

I did read purple cars where OP (part of the reason I stayed away). the star wars nerd in me won out in the last sale, maybe its an influx of new players, maybe its changes, but I rarely notice purple cards making a huge difference. In face if I notice someone has purp cards I make sure to target them.

only thing I found stupid was palpatine, he is lame cheesy.

In general its a pretty good game at this point. It runs well, looks good and for the most part, it's quite a lot of fun. The offline stuff you can do has grown enough that I can log in, shoot things for awhile and get my fun without dealing with the online community.

When I saw the "zero microtransactions" claim, I read that to mean three things:
  1. No Loot Boxes
  2. No Pay to Win / Freemium model
  3. No for-sale in-game cosmetics
But it doesn't mean they can't sell DLC. It doesn't mean they have to produce expansions for free.

I don't think it precludes loot boxes. It only precludes the sale of loot boxes for in-game currency purchased with real money. Gear drops in game are often RNG dependent, and are similar to loot boxes excluding the extra step of clicking on the loot box. Some, such as Destiny 2 have you click on the loot box, but what's inside can't be purchased with in-game currency or real money. They are random drops from quests. But that in itself isn't a microtransaction. I agree 100% on the other points as those are definitely microtransactions. And, it definitely doesn't mean that additional DLC items can't be sold for the game. That's more of a macro transaction rather than a micro-transaction.

Interesting article on PCGamer. Made me a little more cautious about the SP side seeming like only a primer to the MP. Also states that there won't be any DLC. Also like how they had X-Wing in mind as a starting point rather than Battlefront 2.

It's pretty obvious that its not coming with a 40+ hour SP campaign that cost tens of millions of dollars to produce. People will still complain about that, though, and miss what the developers were aiming for with this title.

Bring on an actual skill curve.

See now, I want DLC. I want them to commit to surveying the landscape and producing content over time to keep the game relevant, like they've done (or attempted to do) for the Battlefield games.

Also, if there's anything that will get me to buy an Ampere GPU, mount a HOTAS to my desk, and grab an LG 48CX, it's this. I'm betting that the graphics are going to be hell for anything with slow pixel response, and that having fast pixel response and detailed blacks is going to be a bit of an advantage.

They're definitely going to have to fix this. Perhaps cross-platform play will help.

I would prefer if it had 2 and 3. I don't mind buying something when you know exactly what it is. I don't agree with loot boxes with random items though.

As do I. Not that I want EA to line their pockets with our cash- but continuous content keeps the game community alive past the typical 12-18 months. But:

What we’re trying to do is trying to make a game that’s a little bit old school and it’s mentality. You give us your $40, we give you the game. It is a fully self-contained experience. It’s not, “Well, okay, here’s part of the game and the rest of it will be out next week.” No, it’s the whole game. So at this point we’re not talking about live service or DLC or anything else. Not saying it’s impossible, but that’s really not that we’re going for.

Skeptical. Unless they add new content, re-package the game as a "sequel" 12 months down the road and re-sell it like an EA Sports game. Certainly don't want that.

A space-sim geek over at Polygon asked all the right questions: flight models, energy mgmt, in game currency and level mechanics, etc. It's a worthy read.

The original X-Wing game is what got me into PC gaming in the first place. (was on 8-bit computer gaming before, so it wasn't a huge switch) But I'm still on a i7 3730/GTX 970, and haven't upgraded in eight years. I'm building a new system for SWS.

Indeed. DLC isn't bad. What is bad:

- Little content at release, with content trickling in over time.
- Seasons/DLC passes that split up the community.
- Micro transactions that affect gameplay.
- Micro transactions that affect cosmetics.

Keeping updates, adding some new ships, and some maps and the like are perfectly fine and ideal. Keep the theme and gameplay the same, just improvements and more content. I know we can't expect everything for free, but I am sure there are small things that can be paid for that won't affect gameplay that are not pink or neon colored TIE Fighters.

I don't think Live service is an improvement over microtransactions. At least with the latter you could play the campaign in one breath. Now we'll probably have to wait months to play a 3 mission mini campaign a few times in a year. And end up paying more and getting less for the money.

Hell, bring those on too if it broadens the appeal a bit and the revenue supports further development.
