LG 38GL950G - 37.5" 3840x1600/G-Sync/175Hz

Same thing as the LG 38GL950G, but without the Gsync Module and no fan, but with HDR600 support. And thunderbolt also.
These are really meaningless outside of price. Thunderbolt is useful if you're going to... use a Macbook and hook a DAS up through the monitor? HDR600 likewise; if it's the same panel / backlight array, then that bullet point likely comes from a relaxation of standards. The fan could be annoying... or not. Who really knows.

But if it's half the price?

It's $1600. 👎🏻

It has local dimming to achieve the hdr600, and the panel itself is the updated version of the panel used in the LG 38GL950G, according to tftcentral.

The screen is based on a similar, but slightly updated LG.Display Nano IPS panel as the 38GL950G.

I don't like fald technology in any shape or form in its current implementation, but hopefully it can be turned off if needed. Overall, this looks like a solid PC monitor. Looking forward to reviews and user feedback.
The fan basically kills any Gsync ver.2 monitor for me. People are definitely bothered by it and I am sensitive to those kind of things.

At its price point it most likely has very limited local dimming. I don't expect it to be a particularly great HDR display.

Nobody argues with that. Still, noticeably better than than the hdr400.

Where do you see yourself using HDR? I tried it a few times, wasn't sure I was doing it right. Wasn't necessarily bad, just different and kind of weird, for what I do, the SDR is great.

HDR on this thing looks like ass. Tried it a few times and it just doesn't have the contrast to pull it off like a VA Panel/OLED does.

HDR600 is just max brightness; if that's useful, cool, but otherwise it seems pretty extraneous if the local dimming isn't also effective.
Brightness is the same on both monitors. The HDR600 is achieved by deeper blacks, thanks to edge lit panel used on the 38WN95C.

Afaik HDR600 mandates some sort of local dimming solution. I hope that means it has at least say 8 zones like a cheap LCD TV does. Man saying that sounds so wrong considering how expensive these things are...

Average brightness, possibly, but max brightness should be higher. That's what the number in the certification is for...

This is why I just don't care for desktop or gaming use. 400 is bright enough, really beyond too bright, for the desktop. So make it cheaper or... whatever, really.

Initiated a return on my $1800 GL950 so I have about a week left to send it in, meanwhile purchased the $1600 GL950 while they were on sale from lg.com. My GL950 is on for ~14 hours day and half the time is for work with my PC in quiet mode; the fan noise is always noticeable like a hissing coming from behind the monitor. Has anyone successfully modified their GL950 to upgrade or remove the fan? I would consider the GN950 but if not having a g-sync module means poorer sync performance at low FPS then I'm hesitant; despite having a 2080ti some games such as Arma3 will dip to below 40fps during multiplayer.

Nobody yet removed the fan. I don't think it's possible without further damaging the display. They say there is some kind of frame compensational technology that engages when the fps dips below 40, that eliminates (kind of) the stuttetring. Check out the LG 38WN95C, probably the new king in town. personally, my eyes are on this display. Very interested in how it performs. And yeah, all modern G-sync monitors come with the same fan. Since it's built in to the Gsync hardware module. Or accomodate the LG CX48...

this guy did. see pics here:

he also replaced the GSYNC module fan and the hissing is gone. read the thread from the point i linked to.

Interesting post. I just check my on time for my monitor and it's 2728 hours (basically on 100% of the time).

I usually leave my monitors on all the time and turn off the sleep feature (which is often buggy) but these habits are years and years old and it's probably time to rethink them.

From what I understood from the video I posted earlier, is that hissing happens especially during the sleep mode. So maybe it's not the cockroach in your ear, but you really don't hear it because it's simply not there?
I persoanlly would never use the sleep mode, I'd just turn it off. There is always some buzzing when a monitor goes into sleep mode.

...always? Not an issue I've really even experienced, so I wonder if it's not mains power related or something else?

Backlights will fade and burn out eventually; not sure there's a synthetic light source that doesn't degrade in some manner with use. I'm wondering how you arrived at the conclusion that running them constantly was better?

Used to have issues with NV surround losing the array or having other issues when things would go to sleep. This was years ago in the GTX 480/680 days. I got in the habit of just leaving them on.

Ya definitely time to re-think. All it does is create excess heat, cost/waste energy and wear out the device as fast as possible. Not to mention fans have a limited life-span, and this monitor has two of them.

Figuratively speaking - always. Literally - quite often. Don't ever rethink.

I used to replace my monitors every 12-24 months and they never had fans so it wasn't an issue.

I turned them (the 38 plus the 21" on top) both off last night. That's fine, but I'm not sure I'll always remember. I set Windows to turn off the display after 30m - is that good enough or do I need a hard shut down?

Also, I thought the fans were only running when you're gaming? I'm only gaming a few hours per day at most - the rest of the time, I'm on my corporate laptop (HDMI), working (email, excel, web, etc)

My unedrsanding is that fan(s) operate when the monitor is on and\or in sleep mode. In sleep mode the fan rpm is so low that the fan wobbles and that creates the especially unpleasant sound. There is also coil whine that this monitor emits, and you can't fix that at all, unless someone is an advanced electric engeneer and is able to solder different power components that don't "whine". The coil whine can be confused with the fan rattling too. So, any monitor with the G-sync module ver.2 is basically a dud for a normal PC user.

Have not heard any coil whine. Maybe I should get an Alexa plug to just automate the power off at night....

Don't know about the plug, maybe you should get it, but possibly your unit doesn't have the coil whine. In the overclock UK forum people suffer from it, I also read about it in other internet places before reading it on the OC UK forum. Dangerous monitor, you can get it, have all the smoothness of the g-sync world, and yet, remain unsatisfied. And pretty much significally unsatisfied, to the point of wanting to return the device! Incredible. But, if you're lucky you will not hear any of these downsides. Somehow! Maybe they will not be there for you... or maybe you hearing is such that doesn't sense these sounds. Or maybe you're just in a noisy room with tons of kids and the coil whine is the last thing on earth that would bother you in such conditions. Who knows.

I use mine in a quiet office and never hear it. Not sure what the coil whine frequency is, but I have good hearing up to 17,200Hz

Well, the UK also has a very different power delivery environment. Can't say that's a reason or if it's just unit variation or user variation or something else, but it's also not necessarily an 'always' thing.

My unedrsanding is that fan(s) operate when the monitor is on and\or in sleep mode.

I'd consider this an annoyance personally, but only because my workstation is in a space used by others. If it's going to be on when I'm in the room and off / asleep when I'm not and I'm the only one that uses the space, then whatever?

So, any monitor with the G-sync module ver.2 is basically a dud for a normal PC user.
That's a bit of a broad brush ;)

[perhaps monitor makers, LG in this case, skipped the 'creature comforts', or it could just be normal variation; obviously these are issues for buyrers to check once receiving their unit, but they're not really show-stoppers]

As a pilot I get a hearing test every year and still get really good results. I don't hear any coil whine or the fans from my 38LG. As a reminder, set "Deep Sleep" to "On" to ensure the fans turn off when the monitor is in stand-by.

Just to add to the discussion about the fan noise. I do not hear it but with all the talk in this thread I decided to put my ear up and listen and sure enough there is a slight fan noise coming from the monitor in the back.

The concerning part was my monitor was off. Anyone else have the fans still on while the monitor is powered off?

I hear mine during quiet-time: work/non-gaming operation and I also hear it at night when the monitor is off. In fact I hear it 8 hours later when I wake up and I'm getting ready to start my day. The fan never stops. I can't believe this.

ARRGGGGHHHHH.

I'm still happy with my 38GL950G, but damn it why can't I have it all?! Maybe the overdrive tuning will be screwed up and then I won't feel as bad :p

Here is my two cents. HDR will probabily get alot better on computer lcds further down the road. For me I am saving for LG for now until HDR improves standard for HDR and SDR. Each seems have advantages and disadvantages until technology gets better (for now will be trade offs). Also comes to which type of games you play. Seems LG does better with non HDR games.

HDR getting better down the road is sort of a given. How far down is the unknown. Each year should be improvements however.

Just bought this and my Device Manager is showing "LG Ultrawide (Display Port)"

6-21-2020 10-00-28 PM.jpg

Is this what everyone else has? If not, where do you get the drivers for it? I can't find them anywhere on LG's site...

Monitors don't have "Drivers" per-sey anymore. Monitors offer up the to video card Extended Display Identification Data (EDID), which is a metadata format for display devices to describe their capabilities to the video source. The data format is defined by a standard published by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA).
