Sony Is Struggling With PlayStation 5 Price Due to Costly Parts

I thought it was a good demo, nothing omg amazing until the end. That scene if fully controllable where if they wanted they could land on any roof, go in any building, etc. at that speed is imo representative of the SSD I/O improvements we can expect.

Everything else was fine, but nothing my 2080Ti/9900k PC couldn’t do at over 60fps at 1440p.

The last part no, not if it’s what I think it was. At least the speed of asset streaming.

All the console gamers I know, a handful, now have a gaming PC. None of them had a gaming PC when they bought the last gen consoles. Might be interesting this time around.

I think this has to do with gamers aging and having more disposable income. $1500 goes a long way in gaming. $1500 barely scratches the surface for most other hobbies.

Occasionally I spend a lot on computer equipment. I have a friend who restores classic cars. Now, in all fairness, he does try to sell them, but upfront, it's a huge amount of money. But, usually, he ends up with money, which he then, in turn, does it all again, etc..,etc.. But then, I have another friend that launches large scale liquid fuel rockets. I think all in all, each launch can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars... and there isn't any return there really.

My hobby is cheap.

Well, they are adjusting their guidelines on epic for quality :performance since the UE5 demo even in the low latency 8-9 effective GBps ps5 had very small streaming issues, but tbh during the actual testing I don't think that anyone noticed.

And that's the thing UE5 is scalable, you set down your assets and ideally they want you to be able to control small parameters to achieve a desired resolution:performance result regardless of the platform. They have more than 6 months of work ahead of them to fine tune this.

Sony should not assume that because Microsoft planned for lower powered Xbox series S, that the higher powered series X will launch for a higher price. MS may have put the S in cold storage — says Paul Tassi of Forbes

I say that two consoles released simultaneously with different power levels and prices is a bad idea, and MS would be better off just lowering the price of Series X and making it the system to launch this fall. Again, as of right now that is what’s potentially happening, as we have heard literally nothing about Lockhart from Microsoft directly, but that may change.

I may not fully be on board with the idea that Microsoft will slash the Series X cost down to $400 and eat an enormous loss. But it seems more likely that if Sony does push the cost of PS5 to $450 or $500, that at the very least, Microsoft will match it, and this other talk of the Series X being a $600 console will not pan out (I maintain Microsoft will know better than to release a console priced that high in the wake of a global economic meltdown).

I'll end up getting both consoles eventually, because I like gaming in general. The PS5 appears more balanced but I'll get the Xbox first if the new Halo doesn't come to PC right away.

my problem with the xbox is microsoft kinda defeats the purpose to own one if you have a good PC, I havent touched my poor xbox one in over a year outside of youtube/plex and all my game time goes to PS4 exclusives and my PC.

I agree completely. But I like to collect things and try them out. My PS4 Pro, Xbox One S and Switch are collecting dust, might as well add to the collection lol. I'm excited to fire up the 3DS again, as I finally found Samus Returns locally.

haha truthfully only reason I bought my xbox one is I found it 50% off a year after launch in a pawn shop and I cant pass up a stupid good deal even if I dont need it :p My switch has actually been getting alot more use now that my wife has discovered Mario kart, we have a nightly mario kart round (or two) with our kids before bed lol

I bought 4 One S consoles so my wife, friends and family could CO-OP all the Halo MCE games in our gaming room.

The fact you can do that on Steam now (at least with 3 games so far), with a LAN setting so you don't need XBL subs, proves your earlier point.

I can't pass up a deal either lol.

I am honestly curious as to what the PS5 and XBSX launch prices will be. Be nice to get both for under a grand.

ya, Ive got $600 set aside in a bank account for a new ps5 (hurray for my wife budgeting for me lol) so as long as its less than that im happy

I can’t imagine either console being more than 499.99. I doubt I’ll get a Series X unless MS allows you to install Windows 10 on it, in which case I’ll buy 4.

PlayStation 5 is day 1 for me. I have like 70 games and have only finished 5 or so. I just cannot play a lot of them as they are. 30fps or heavy stuttering, etc. I beat Knack 1 and 2, Uncharted 4, Diablo 3, Infamous Second Son, TLOU Remastered, etc.

I haven’t really played more than 30 minutes of Horizon, Spider Man, Killzone, Days Gone, Blood Bourne, God of War, and tons of others.

I’m hoping they all get patched and run at 60fps or higher.

MS will never allow a windows to be installed. It would open it up to piracy instantly. I wouldn't even expect a stripped down locked down version.

If Microsoft plans to support PC gaming and therefore Windows gaming, then there's no excuse not to have Windows 10 on Xbox. You're not wrong about the piracy thing, but piracy isn't something you can stop. There's no piracy on Xbox One because Xbox One is a dead console. All the piracy is focused on PS4, which has been hacked and enjoying pirated games for sometime. Nobody is making a Xbox One emulator, just a PS4 emulator.

If Microsoft wants to save the Xbox brand then putting Windows 10 on Xbox Series X is a really good idea. You can't stop piracy, but you can work around it like Xbox Game Pass. Even though I argue something like the Humble Bundle monthly fee is better because when you stop paying you get to keep the games. If I were Microsoft I wouldn't be worried about preventing piracy, since it had backfired for Microsoft back in 2013 when the Xbox One was released. Does anyone forget that Microsoft tried to prevent used games from working on the Xbox One before release? That's why today Microsoft doesn't report the amount of Xbox One units sold because people avoid that console like it was the plague.

It wouldn't save Xbox at all. The common games doesn't give two fucks if it is running windows.

It's already running a Windows kernel and plenty of infrastructure sourced from the Windows ecosystem, just cut down to what a console needs.

If Microsoft wanted an Xbox to run the full Windows experience, they could have done that from the get go with the first one!

(they don't)

He never said that it would still play XBox games with Windows 10 installed.

I would buy one in a heartbeat with Windows 10 installed as well. It's would be a perfect Windows SFF PC.

Though Microsoft wouldn't do that as it would defeat the purpose of getting the console numbers up.

All I’m saying is that if their entire strategy is to be a SaaS company they probably don’t care about the platform used. They would drastically increase sales (in my opinion) of the hardware and put more people into the Xbox ecosystem.

It doesn’t have to be Home or Pro, they could do it like Apple and only allow a Windows 10 S using a T2 equivalent chip for all I care.

I’d be willing to buy at least 2, probably 4 myself because I wouldn’t have to worry about my kids PCs, Parents, etc. and considering the costs of NUCs they’d put a dent in that market.

What, exactly, makes you think they'd drastically increase sales? The number of people that would care about that are pretty tiny in the grand scheme of things. You seem to vastly overestimate the size of the enthusiast audience.

At some point, I almost expect Microsoft to do this. However, it undermines the one console revenue generator: the actual games. People buying consoles and using them as PCs don't make the console makers money. Selling them the games does.

The main reason for them to consider letting the Xbox boot some form of desktop would be if that were tied to Windows as a Service. A 'Microsoft 365' subscription could enable this functionality, and it's not like Microsoft doesn't have the capability to provide the appropriate wireless peripherals (keyboard with trackpad etc).

And the counter-point is this: an Xbox has a bunch of hardware that's well suited for gaming, but it's designed to be in a living room hooked up to a TV. If one wants a desktop experience there, okay, but are people going to buy more than one? Are they going to hook it up only to their TV and only use that as their desktop workstation? Are they going to hook it up to something smaller and do both?

Because it’s effectively a non boosting Ryzen 3700X, 16GB Ram, 1TB SSD and Navi 2 (RTX 2080ish) for 500 dollars.

Yep, I'd get one in a heartbeat if it was a PC. Vastly better bang/buck than any PC you could build. Not to mention, it's a nice clean SFF design. It's a VERY desirable PC IMO.

Heck, Microsoft could use it to get rid of the lesser XBox chips, even as a 6 core CPU, with slightly cut down GPU, it would still be a great SFF gaming PC. Instead of junking the SoC dies that don't make the cut, they can sell them at a profit.

They would be cheap Windows desktops using some form of Windows S I’m sure. Games (or better the software) will still be available to purchase on that Windows machine.

I very much doubt they have a completely open Windows install. It’ll be like you said some sort of subscription or locked down ecosystem.

I’d even be fine with them only allowing the option for those with GamePass subscriptions. Do you have GamePass? Awesome you can install Windows S on your Xbox Series X. You can have 2-4 installs per GamePass subscription.

I dunno I’m just arm-chairing but the concept is interesting from an economics standpoint imo.

Windows S is DOA. The console is not going to be opened up for any reason, since they do not need to. Why would they cause problems or damage their XBox Live Gold service? Why would they discourage people from buying an actual desktop computer?

I take it you missed my responses and how does that hurt Xbox Live Gold? Do you think millions would jump from console gaming to PC type gaming on a whim?

I am telling you they are not even going to risk it, besides the HUGE support nightmare that would ensue if they were to do that. It is never going to happen and that is why there are consoles and then there are PC's.

Hey let some of us dream for gods sake 😂. Sony tried with Linux but MS could do it. Maybe not at first because of “gamer” demand. But once supply lines are established I say go for it.

MS doesn’t care about consoles or PCs being separate either way their ecosystem expands.

This one trick lets you build a Windows 10 Xbox from scratch!

First, buy a motherboard... ;)

Yea and you saw what problems it caused for Sony.

How so? It opened up the PS3 to piracy and putting windows on Xbox will do the same. It caused Sony to remove it and then they got sued cause less then .1% of gamers used it.

Well for starters it was all forms of Linux and FreeBSD iirc with only the video card being denied access. Otherwise it was completely open. Second, it was outside of Sony’s pervue meaning Sony didn’t control the Linux distros. Third, Sony’s sole revenue was at risk with the GeoHot (I think that’s it) hacks. Gaining that access would have killed them.

Literally all of those are mute points in this case in my opinion. MS would just allow two modes Windows or Xbox (arm chairing here) both giving access to different ways to play Xbox games. Piracy wouldn’t be much different than allowing Windows on a PC already.

I have my Gaming PC and it does great, that said I’m probably going to get a PS5 as well. I skipped the 4 nothing really interested me there. The 5 looks to hold some promise.

The people that buy Xbox specifically buy it because it's not a PC.

If you want a HTPC, you can build one in a nice SFF case for maybe just a bit more, and it would be better than whatever locked-down version of Windows MS would use.

I don't see $699 happening. Sony made the mistake of pricing a console too high once before with the PS3 and that did not go over well.

If I had to guess, it'll be $399 for the PS5 Digital Only and $499 for the regular PS5. UHD Blu-ray drives aren't as expensive anymore, but that'll offset the amount they'll lose on the digital only versions. Either way, they'll likely lose money or break even on these consoles at launch.

Yeah, I can't see $699 either, unless MS went crazy and priced theirs that high.

Likely we won't know anything until whomever blinks first on pricing.

Calling it now, which ever console releases first comes with an NDA to not reveal pricing until the other reveals it. If you want it you go to the store and sign the NDA and buy it and read the receipt to find out the price.

At least that’s how it feels these two are treating things. At the very least it doesn’t feel like they’re in collusion for astronomical price fixing if they’re too busy trying to undercut.

It is not price fixing. Its them trying to win the next console generation with the lease amount of loss. I think the $500 price point is a loss for both companies. Sony probably hoping MS prices it at $600+ so they wont take a huge loss under cutting them. Sony could release the price at $500 first and MS could say fuck it and sell it for $400 with a huge hit in profits just to win. Sony wouldn't be able to undercut them.
