The Last of Us: Part II

not the 10's across the board that fans were hoping for but a lot of high scores...

What. For all intents and purposes this is 10s across the board. Show me a single piece of media with 84+ critic reviews that is literally 10s across the board. It's impossible.

its getting 10s from all the small shilly places and the "big" guys that arent giving it 10s are being ignored.

i know shack, ign and informer the rest are who knows and when did the guardian and telegraph become gaming sites, they are uk tabloids.

I don't really care about rating scores...but this scares me: "Everything in The Last of Us 2 takes work. Every weapon reload, killing blow, and crafted item takes time and button presses. At times the game is painfully slow; even in the most action-packed sections you put in effort to move things forward."
Hopefully that means challenging, thought provoking, and maybe even unforgiving vs. tedious.

I'm sorry, but accusing all those places of shilling is a major cop-out, esp. when all the evidence you have is their consistent review scores, which is also evidence of a fair review, so it's not really evidence.

Many reviewers also gave the original TLoU a perfect score as well, which it deserved in my opinion and many others, so were they shilling then too?

I know people like to hate on IGN particularly, but I listen to both their Beyond (PlayStation) and Gamescoop podcast every week and know Jonathan (the author of that review) was just as concerned about the leaks and this game not delivering before he got his copy, so I trust what he says about it and can't wait for their spoilercast after the game is out and we've all beat it so they can get into the details of it. It seems to me that most "serious" gamers dismiss IGN simply because they're the biggest game review site and don't know anything about the staff or reviewers there as individuals.

Lol here we go with the “the game is actually terrible” controversy. Knew this was coming.

The first TLoU and RDR2 were both hailed as some of the greatest games ever. I find both of those games to be highly flawed. Good? Absolutely. Great? Maybe? Best ever? Nah. Maybe if you're just watching a playthough rather than slogging through yourself. Some of that's personal preference, but I think a lot of game reviewers these days aren't hardcore gamers.

You said nobody's doing the "stop liking what I don't like" thing but you're doing exactly that, lmao

except im not. im pointing out that the "not perfect" reviews are being ignored and that it may not be as good as is being touted. never said it was garbage or told anyone not to like it or anything you implied.

You're going around saying the positive reviews are from shills and everyone's "ignoring" the "not perfect" reviews. Just seems like you have an agenda against the game.

edit: And just to be clear, I'm not trying to "defend" the game either. I'm ready for anything, although I do have expectations based on the previous game and what was shown to the public. I'll give my honest opinion on it one way or the other once I've played it.

no agenda except the truth. im saying youre not getting the whole picture. those small sites dont dare go against them or theyll never get a review copy again, ie shilling.

edit2: look at the ign usa vs ign japan reviews to see what i mean.

people don't take IGN seriously because they easily give out 9's and 10's for too many games...plus a lot of times it looks like they want to stay in favor with the big publishers/developers so they are always kissing up to most games

overall I have around 4 gaming review sites that I trust and take their reviews more seriously because they have a history of being critical...and just because LoU2 gets an 8.5 doesn't mean it sucks...it's what I've always said about gamers nowadays- everything is either a 10 or a 0...there is no in between...you can score an 8.5 and still be an excellent game

I feel like 10's should be reserved for all time great games. Games we're going to remember 2-3 hardware generations later. Titles like the Witcher 3, Resident Evil 4, Dark Souls, Half-Life 2, Dragon Age Origins, etc. Hell, even being a massive, massive Uncharted fan I don't think I'd give any of those a 10. U2 still has that awful stealth mission at the beginning and the sponge overload guardians at the end.

^^^ shilling(not posters, sites). notice how they arent touting kotaku and polygon like normal?!

" Everything in The Last of Us 2 takes work. Every weapon reload, killing blow, and crafted item takes time and button presses. At times the game is painfully slow; even in the most action-packed sections you put in effort to move things forward. You’re paid for this work in a grim story and explicit violence. It can be exciting and beautiful, but mostly I just felt like shit. " - kotaku

"That is the game’s central problem, and what makes so much of it such a challenge to get through: This is a story about characters who seem unable to learn or grow, and more specifically, unable to consider the humanity of the people they kill. If you already think violence isn’t the answer to many of the world’s problems, the repeated lesson that killing is bad makes the game almost maddening. " - polygon

I enjoy Skill Up's reviews, I'm surprised he is so down on the game...

here is an excellent article from USGamer dealing with review scores...Universal Praise Has Never Served Anyone- not everyone loves Naughty Dog's latest, and we're all the better for it

I think good criticism helps us look at things in new ways, from new angles, so that we can understand them better...It can challenge our understanding of something or deepen our appreciation of it...good criticism is not particularly concerned about agreeing with us...that brings us to The Last of Us Part 2, another heavily hyped sequel with a particularly "passionate" fanbase...the Metacritic average is a sterling 96

It seems like most reviewers loved it, but anyone who's been browsing the first wave of write-ups knows the game is not receiving universal acclaim thanks to the growing number of outlets who abandoned review scores...these are the sort of dissenting views we didn't often see from major outlets when a big game came out a decade or longer ago...pieces that dare to say it's not enough to be technically impressive and iterate on the last big thing; pieces that grapple with the themes and message of a game instead of (or in addition to) whether or not it plays well or looks pretty

In some ways it's a reflection of the growth of the games themselves that they are now better able to support that sort of criticism, but it's also a reflection of the maturation of games journalism in general...

People that don't take IGN (or any other major reviewer really) seriously take gaming too seriously, and I say that as a pretty passionate gamer myself, given how invested I am into all platforms and hardware I've acquired for it. 9s and 10s shouldn't be only reserved for objectively perfect games, whatever that would look like given games, like movies and books, are a very subjective medium and rely on your own interpretation to determine if it's good or not. Looking back at IGN's 9s and 10s too, for the games I've played out of them so far, I can agree with for the most part even if I didn't particularly enjoy some of those games enough to give them the same score, because I understand that it's all subjective and down to the player's taste in that genre of game, which IGN's staff lead does take into account when assigning individuals to review specific games.

Accusing them of just staying in big publishers/developers favor is just blasphemy, backed up only by your bad take on their review system. They have yet to give any Call of Duty game a 10, which they're constantly accused of and have rated them anywhere from a 4 to a 9.3 on their old score system (before they moved to whole numbers only) from what I see. They just gave the FF7 remake an 8/10. They've given current Mario games anywhere between a 7.7 (Mario + Rabbids) to a 10 (Mario Odyssey), which seem appropriate for their respective titles. You can disagree all you like with anyone's reviews, but they truth is that they're all individuals with no agenda other than to review games as they see fit and have no need to "shill" for publishers or anyone else and accusing them of such just discredits yourself more than it does them unless you actually have any real evidence to otherwise show they owe anything to game publishers.

Noted. But I'm pretty sure everyone knows not everyone is going to like any game no matter how universally praised it is though. It was the same for the first game and with the additional controversy surrounding this game with the leaks and perceived political statements, it looks like the media and reviewers are going to milk whatever controversy/clicks they can out of this game as well.

I was really looking forward to ACG's review of this game though, but it seems like he didn't get a review code somehow while smaller youtubers did, so his review isn't going to be out until after the game's already launched and I've already played through it. Honestly though, this game could be getting 6 or 7s across the board and I'd still be buying and playing it just because of how much I enjoyed the first one and want to see how the story goes for myself, but it's hard to see any ND game scoring that low..oh wait, IGN actually gave Lost Legacy a 7.5/10. So much for shilling

If you're buying the digital version of the game, you can start preloading today. The download is 76.149GB on my PS4.

I just finished lost legacy. Took a bit longer than I thought it would, but it was worth it. I liked it a lot and had fun playing through it, now, onto TLoU.

As for part 2, I never go off of review scores for any game. If it's a brand new IP, I wait for word of mouth. If it's a series I like, I'll usually buy it regardless of official scores, depending on who made it. I might wait a bit if it's a new studio and their first sequel. Example, the outlast series. I loved the first one, and the expansion. Part 2 though, I was going to get, played the demo, and haven't played the full game yet, as it just didn't grab me. User reviews also aren't as good as the first.

Naughty Dog though is an established studio and they haven't made a game I don't like. Based on the gameplay videos released, it looks great and I know I'll enjoy it. Sure the story might be polarizing or social-justice-y, but, I don't care, as long as I personally have fun on the journey.

I watched a quick "things to know before playing" video on the treadmill yesterday that made the game seem right up my alley. Faster gameplay, more open environments, less frustrating stealth, fewer instant death moments, and more variety with infected. Those are basically my gripes with TLoU 1 in a nutshell.

Don't you care enough that they are trying to desensitize you and cause your mind to flop gender? I wouldn't be risking it. Surely the dlc might be winged as being young kid not understand much and sneak in a kiss, but here, they turn the protagonist into an established lesbian(ellie), and protagonist#2 a woman-less young lady! Have you seen her body build?! Except for a small hint of boobs, she's like a late teen male!!

It almost feels like they're trying too hard to shove the LGBT agenda into you, saying: "look, this is NORMAL!!! EAT IT!!!!"

taco shaking heads...🙄

I wish developers like CDPR or Naughty Dog would make a "conservative mode" toggle where it would just make everyone straight and white so they wouldn't get triggered. Like with CP2077 with the supposed crazy options for gender pronouns and genitalia and all that - just have a thing that says "do you consider yourself politically on the left or right?" and have all those options grayed out (or not shown) so sensitive people would be spared the horror.

It's not about being 'political'. Re:blacks, I don't mind having black characters in games. That's normal, being black is normal. Being white is also normal. Being taco is also very normal.

I have a problem with them trying too hard to promote LGBT. Women should be attracted to men, women have boobs, women have more delicate bodies. Not they other way around. Wtf did they do to that angry protagonist..a gorilla? They made her a rambo with very faint feminine details.

Besides, that poster someone made a few posts above "very angry lesbian", looks like it got taken down. Why? Because people got triggered. Why? "It's okay for me be lesbian, but don't ever call me a lesbian!"

Sure...

I mean, I can't believe it's 2020 and I'm talking to someone about this, but... what do you think happens when someone plays this game who considers themselves straight - "damn this gay stuff looks pretty great. I'm up for a life of being considered a lesser human being, let's get it on"??? But setting all that centuries old argument aside, why not just skip the game if you find it so offensive and leave it at that? As Jim Jefferies once said, "don't like gays? don't marry a gay person! That'll show the gays, eh?!"

And the "angry lesbian" pic didn't get taken down, it's right there...

Ummmm, sounds like you're the one triggered?

So this game is being reported to be pretty damn long at 25ish hours from what I see in the reviews for first-time runs. Anyone else dedicating the whole weekend to playing through this? hah

I took Friday off just to start playing it at midnight, but I just realized that since I'm in Italy and the game unlocks at midnight EDT, I won't be able to start playing it until 0700.. but guess that's a good thing so I don't have to stay up all night and can just keep my work alarm set to get up and start my marathon. :D

I went ahead and pre-ordered the digital deluxe edition as well with the soundtrack, art album, dynamic theme, and avatars for an extra $10.

Unfortunately I don't expect to get it before next week.

I'm off on Friday and Saturday. So I'll get through a good chunk, hopefully.

I'll probably put some time in over the weekend. At least 4-5 hours if I can help it. The first game is still fresh in my mind, so I might as well take advantage of my muscle memory for the controls.

Really looking forward to this, loved the first one, one of my top games of all time. Not sure I've ever felt such a connection to characters in a game except maybe the Mass Effect series. But it also had 3 games to build that up.

I've done my best to stay away from spoilers of any kind so ideally going into it pretty fresh unless I accidentally stumble on something this week. I think I played the left behind side quest but couldn't remember the story so I played through that again yesterday. Was a good refresher on the controls at least and makes me excited for revisiting the characters again.

That's what killed the 3rd batman game for me, they changed the controls to incorporate the batmobile and it threw me off so much after playing the first 2 games back to back
