[GOG] Total Annihilation: Commander Pack

Super RTS nostalgia kick from this, such a great RTS that will forever be up there in one of the best of its time.

I bought it a year or two ago. Just tried to revisit recently and it seemed to have some real issues with modern GPUs/Monitors (and I forced it to a 4:3 resolution).

One of the best games ever, but if anyone has tips on how to make it run well, I'm all ears....

there's a few fixes out there to get it to work in 1080p but still buggy and will randomly crash.

forums still active so i'd check there.

Also, GoG now has Supreme Commander 1 and 2 for sale too. New to the site.

Supreme Commander 2 never seemed like much of a sequel. Basically the same engine, same graphics, mostly the same units, etc. Except you have extra artificial limits that weren't present in the first game, which went directly against what I liked most about the first game. I loved massive battles across huge maps, etc.

What really bums me out is that back in the day those games (including Total Annihilation) were always limited by computer performance toward the end, if you were on a large map with large numbers of units. Performance would simply slow to a crawl. Even when playing on a modern system, it's still possible for it to slow down to a crawl toward the end because the game basically runs completely within one thread. I always hoped that they would eventually release an updated version some day, that could perhaps take advantage of multiple cores. It seems like the sort of game that should be able to take advantage of that. I'd love to see what sort of epic battle I could manage using all 24 threads of my 3900X. Not to mention, a smarter AI would be nice also. I mean, even if they still used the decades-old units and graphics, it would still be an awesome "new" game if they simply modernized it to take advantage of newer hardware and AI.

Probably the most fun I ever had with an RTS, bought it when released back in 1997. Played with co-workers over the corporate network, for months, and I would fire it up, for many years after. Way ahead of it's time.

Back in the day, I loved how they kept releasing new units for free, that kept changing the balance of power. New ARM unit this week, next week a new Core unit.

I already bought it again on GoG just for the convenience, and to get all the expansions.

This. Definitely play it with this mod! Core contingency and expansions area a good idea too.

Still to this day I rate this as the best RTS ever. It works fine on 1440p, handles a million units, heaps of mods/ai/etc packs and was light-years ahead of everything else except maybe starcrack. And it works on everything that's ~20 years old. Only issues I have over many builds is save game corruption in skirmishes. So always save a few copies - if they go all multi coloured or black in map preview, then it's probably corrupted more often than not.

don't forget the various commands like +makeposter in skirmish to get a mega screenshot. That was one of my favorites to do in the biggest battles to just appreciate the lunacy of it.

TA changed how I played games. A little bit of a challenge to get it to work on Win10 but it's still so good

Between TA and Warzone 2100 (Free on steam but it's an outdated version so https://wz2100.net/ is the up to date standalone) I was basically ruined of RTS games. When WZ2100 came out in 99 it just blew my mind at what an RTS could be and still shaped what I feel an RTS should be.

Pretty cool to see so many TA fans still out there. Ive been playing it since it first released, back in 96/97 (cant even remember anymore). Got so many of my fellow dorm mates hooked on playing it over the lan. Might have to fire it up again
