Red Dead Redemption 2

I"m about to finish this for the second time (first on PS4, 2nd on PC). and I did not know this, so thanks for the heads up.
I'm on the wrong side of 40, and have been playing PC/console games since early 80's. I can safely say I have put more hours in this game than any other game I've played. I just can't stop playing it.

Is it worth buying Red Dead Redemption to play on my XBox One? (Yeah, it is a 360 game but.....)

Definitely. I purchased a cheap used XBox One ($80 shipped off ebay) just to play RDR1 before I got to play RDR2. No regrets.

Now...I just need to sell this XBox One...

It's crazy that it's already been a decade. I don't think I saw sunlight for three weeks when RDR1 launched in May 2010.
Good lawd! Decade eh? Yeah I loved RDR1 and Undead, just fantastic. Guess after second play though on RDR2, I'll have to hit that back up.

Just to let everyone know who wants to play the original RDR... if you have a reasonably [H]ard system, check out RPCS3 the extremely performant (though not always perfect for all titles yet still impressive and quickly improving) open source Playstation3 emulator. Likewise, Xenia - an Xbox360 emulator. Honestly i'm, not sure which is better at this point but if I had to only pick one I'd likely try the PS3 emu - its a bit further along. RDR1 is one of the desirable games for that platform that the emu targets, much like Metal Gear Solid 4 (and the whole MGS Legacy Collection), or Persona 5 . So yeah, before you grab a used console to play an older title it may be worth looking into emulation but just be wary, there are LOTS of garbage fake/virus-laden emus out there - stick to major projects preferably open source ones!

That said, after finally clearing out AC Odyssey of my open-world-game backlog, I'm ready to give RDR2 / RDR Online a chance. Anything I should know when getting started? I'm on PC, have the top tier Ultimate Edition etc. Should I play a certain bit of the single player title before I try Red Dead Online? Also, I see that Online seems to have some sort of "battle pass" setup but it is currently not taking more members now. Are those items exclusive and/or will they be back? Besides the "battle pass", i see a LOT of items available on the website for "gold bars" which seem to be a premium currency. Can these be earned in game at a reasonable pace and/or are the items otherwise unlocked?

Any tips you have for someone just starting the (both single player and online) game? Finally, if there are any Linux users who have played on Proton or similar, your experiences would be especially appreciated; I can only hope Rockstar's launcher allows the game to patch properly and that there isn't some sort of anticheat that is totally unfriendly to Linux users via Wine/Proton etc. Thanks!

The two have nothing to do with each other.

Most people are pretty divided between both. I know some people that never even touched the singleplayer, which is crazy to me.

What do you mean, the two have nothing to do with each other? From what I understand, RDR2 is a prequel RDR is a continuation of the prequel story line.

I was commenting on the multiplayer and single player.

Red Dead 2 seems very divisive...even a lot of people that loved the first game don't love the 2nd...I don't know why Rockstar decided to go into hardcore horse riding/resource management sim mode with the sequel...were they worried about repeating themselves too much

it is not hardcore at all, you brush your horse once in a blue moon and give some money to the camp to buy upgrades.

imo
The biggest issue is the 'twist' about 2/3rd of the way through where you switch from Arther to John, personally I hate that shit so i did everything else but that and have since never beaten the game.

I think the first one is a much better game, but the world isn't anywhere as detailed. RDR2 is as much RPG as it is an action game or GTA'ish clone. The first one really is just GTA in the wild west. You don't have to worry about having dozens of meters and things to micro manage. Gunplay is a lot less automated, too.
The world feels far less alive, though.
I have mixed feelings about RDR2. It's a great world with great characters and there is a TON to see and do. Yet I consider playing to to be a constant exercise in frustration because of how much time everything takes. The game is much longer than it needs to be because it's padded with load screens, riding for hours, sloooow walking in/around camp, random encounters, etc. Plus, inventory management is tedious and could really use a streamline.
Yet here I am at around 60-70% complete with my second playthrough. It's compelling in spite of its flaws.

Anyone messed with RDR2 mods? I'm speaking of

- Significantly longer days and nights
- Less aimbotty NPCs
- Enemies that go down with one Winchester shot to the chest, spaghetti Western style
- Permanently removing weapons you don't want
- Giant rideable boars, wolves, mountain lions

Have spent a couple of hours playing this, but decided I might wait until my next big system upgrade before investing any significant time. Daddy needs a new 3080ti for some silky smooth frames!

In my second playthough I'm discovering that a lot of the weapon unlocks aren't actually good. The Volcanic and Sheffield pistols are the best pistols in the game. You get access to them in the very first town, Valentine. Ditto with the Lancaster Repeater, which is provided in Strawberry. You don't get anything comparable until the very end of the game and it's debatable if the Litchfield is actually better. Thanks to the game's auto-targeting system, the bolt-action rifle is better than the other rifles. Again, you get it super early.
Last time I think I was just excited for something new.

Meh, I found that weapons are nearly irrelevant anyway since 1 headshot from any gun will kill almost anything in the entire game.

Plus deadeye becomes utterly broken once you have the manual targeting and it becomes trivial to just drop everything in sight in seconds.

I actually never use deadeye outside of those shooting challenges where you have to. I do use the lock-on mechanism since I'm playing with a pad, but it tends to aim for center mass rather than the head. The game is never hard (I've only died twice and both instances were wonky), but weapon choice definitely affects some fights.
I think the single hardest thing in the game is catching that one legendary fish with the old veteran.

So what is the lowest price this game has ever been on PC? About $40 on Epic is the lowest I can find. Trying to see if I can get it for $25 or so.

use your epic coupon, you have one right?, to knock it down to $30.
i paid full price and then the next week is when it dropped to $40. i was a little pissed but i have gotten my monies worth out of it.

$40 is what I paid, too. It's worth it for sure. Just ignore most of the random meters and stick to the main missions early. It's easy to get distracted and overwhelmed, but the game is long AF even if you do nothing but the main story.

yup. i think im at about 80hrs and only 2/3 through because of wandering.

Riding the horse every where became exhausting after a while so I had to take short breaks to keep my sanity.

I did enjoy the game however. I put in 51 hours at least and that's with just the main storyline, haven't touched the online portion of the game yet.

no need to ride everywhere. you buy the map upgrade in the main camp and then when you setup a travel camp you have access to fast travel points

Fast traveling is WAY better on the PC. At least if you have a quick hard drive. On the console, you might as well just ride there. At least unless you're going from St. Denis to Blackwater. On the PC it only takes a few seconds to setup camp and maybe 15-20 for the new area to load.
It's worth riding to places and seeing the sights for the first half of the game or your first time to any new place. After that, fast traveling is the way to go.

I agree, I think it took me like 80+ hours or something to finish the main story. And that's with me just blitzing the main missions for like the final quarter of the game.

I can easily see it taking in the 100 range if you really go out and about and explore the world and dick around. There's a _ton_ to see, the world is, for the most part, immensely detailed. It's a pretty darn long game.

I also strongly enjoyed the deep metagame of walking into serious cutscenes with 12 pounds of horse shit and mud caked into my wizard beard and colorful clothes. Motherfuckers could smell me 20 minutes before I would arrive in town.

Seems like $40 is the cheapest then. Will think on it. Reason being I have a few other games I do have currently that I can play but never did, so I don't feel like paying near full price when I have other games I can play for free right now. Mafia 2, Borderlands The Pre Sequel, Just Cause 4. I tried all but Mafia 2 already but quit early on, but thinking of giving them another chance. I'm sure if I look, I'll find a few other games in my back log.

Edit: Does the EGS version require Rockstar Social Club?

The rockstar launcher is inescapable as far as I know.

Sounds like it, not seeing it on the EGS page but everyone claims it does. Tried to load up GTAV again and the Social Club thing didn't auto sign in, had all kinds of issues. I just downloaded it a week back I believe. I'll think on it. I'd be okay with EGS, Steam, Uplay or Origin, but Social Club always gave me issues.

Maybe this is a sign that I should just play the games I already have and work through the backlog.

One of the very best single player games of all time. Just well done now that they have it running well. I am doing fine with a 4.2 3770k and a 980 ti 7 gb amp extreme @1440.

One issue is that I cannot get reshade to work. It installs fine. Just will not activate. It's a random thing apparently. Some people can get it to work no problem and others nope. Regardless of experience level with reshade.

Any preference for mouse/keyboard or controller? Considering there is shooting I can't imagine using a controller, but for other stuff like horse riding I'd think a controller works better.

I played though entirely on a mouse and keyboard, was fine.

If anything it makes dead eye completely and utterly broken because of how fast you can aim in comparison.

A couple of questions. Is this worth playing on a PS4 Pro? I have a opy that came with the console when I got it for my son. Second, are you playing as a criminal the whole time?

Yeah but everything *outside* of dead eye was designed for a controller. You ever see what hunting is like for controllers? It auto-snaps to heads. Watching them hunt the small animals like squirrels or w/e was insane. Stuff you can BARELY hit with a mouse cuz it's so small, the gamepad crosshair just locks on and follows it.

iirc you need to hit headshots for perfect pelts, with the mouse you are pretty much required to use dead eye for the critters cuz there's no way you can pull it off manually. unless you really take your time.

I guess, but you have practically unlimited deadeye anyway. If you loot bodies, you will literally never run out of items. I was perpetually capped on everything.

And you'll have so much money from looting anyway you can afford anything with ease. Near the end of the game I was just going around buying literally everything just for the sake of owning it and I still had money to spare.
