ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

That's a bit high for an 1882i. There's one on eBay for $149 and they're taking offers. I would not get a 1680ix at this point. They're ancient. The 1882 series is still getting firmware updates, which is quite something (last one for the 1680 was in 2012).

hey does anyone know if you can attach drives with data, and whether they will be passed through to OS without being initialized/wiped?
 
Does anyone with a 1880i can confirm if fan speed is reported ??

Also, I am using a Chenbro expander, but no hardware info is reported.
Do I need a special I2C cable, or that info should be reported through the sff8087 ?
 
My 1880i running firmware 1.52 does not report fan speed. My 1882i on firmware 1.55 shows fan speed for both the card and SAS expanders. Your Chenbro expander might not report anything back as my 1880i does at least show temperatures from my Supermicro expanders.

Running 1.52 too.
So I guess there's no way to monitor this kind of information.
The other day I found the fan broke in the Chenbro. It was really hot and this scared me.

In two weeks I'll update to the latest 2019 firmware, but first I'm fixing a Degraded RaidSet.
I suppose I only need to remove the bad drive and install a new one ? No need to fiddle in the controller ?

I will contact areca and chenbro though, to understand why it won't show through SES2..
Regarding the hardware information, I saw there is I2C protocol in both areca and chenbro expander, could this be a potential method that allows the information to appear in the hardware monitor?
 
I've got a 1223 8i on my desktop machine. Bought an adaptec 5805 for my backup computer. Just wanted it really to connect jbod. The problem I've got is that the adaptec doesn't seem to do passthrough. So any drives with existing data will get zilched in the process of adding them.

I'm thinking of getting another areca card. Partly because I believe that they passthrough drives if they're not part of raid (so the OS will see them). And partly because if I have a hardware failure I have a compatible raid board I can swap in a hurry.

Bearing in mind that 10-12 tb disks might be affordable in the next few years, what is the oldest board I should consider? (speed is not important for the backup machine). I found a 1882i x8 for about $200US, which sounds a bit too good to be true. Otherwise its 1680 x12's that are generally available for the same price.

(or should I just save my money and get a cheap LSI card?)

Wait for the world to get back to work. RAID card and computer parts in general have gone up big time since COVID-19. I bought a 2080 ti used for cheap in November 2019 and sold it in 2020 after cyberpunk was delayed for a nice profit.

No, not really. That is not the case for server hardware. Those cards are very old now anyway. The newer one, the 1882i, was released 9 years ago. The 1680 line is over 12 years old.

I was not talking about cards older than the 1882 series. The 16xx series cards and junk in terms of features when you compare them to the 1882 series. The 1882 series cards were going for $300 or less on ebay before January 2020 and the 1883 cards were about $200--$400 if you leave out the 1883IX-24. Now sellers have boost the 1883 series cards to prices that match newegg where the careds come with cables. One last thing I should point out the 1884 series cards have been for a while and they still cost $999, you can get one for $899 if you look hard enough.
 
There are still multiple 1882 cards for $250 on eBay. I bought an 1883ix-24 for $225 three days ago as well, so one can definitely find better prices with some patience. As for the 1884 series, I don't think they sold well and are quite rare, not to mention very similar to the 1883 series.

I think very few people are looking at Areca these days because you can get higher performing LSI/Broadcom cards for less. Main thing they have going for them is the OOB management.

When flashing an areca card I do all the other files first and save the firmware for last and then reboot. FYI you should download the manual for your card and read the flashing directions OR reading the firmware update process PDF

It cannot. You can get a very cheap LSI SAS HBA on ebay for under $20 and flash it to IT mode to help with this.
 
Has anyone tried any of the 14TB HGST drives?
I've got an Areca 1882ix and wanted to soon purchase some drives with model WUH721414AL5204 (i.e. P/N 0F31052) and hook them up.
They're not on the compatibility list but that means no one tested them, it doesn't necessarily mean they don't work.
I honestly see no reason why they wouldn't, just though I'd ask here first.
Well, just to answer my own query, I did pick up 8 of the above drives which are now running for a week 24/7 in a RAID6 array.
No timeout dropouts, no issues whatsoever. The controller recognized them from the start and I was able to initialize the array.

I was pleasantly surprised to find out they are very quiet drives.
Compared to the 10TB ones (model HUH721010AL5200, P/N 0F27352) that I have, they are much quieter.

So I currently have 20 drives connected to my 1882ix-24 controller with 3 arrays set up and everything is running smoothly.

One note for those that plan on picking up these drives and using HDSentinel to monitor them, do update to the latest version.
Otherwise, the individual drives won't show up. I'm currently running version 5.61 and drives are individually listed.

It also hangs sometimes in raid mode with my drives connected. I set them as pass through devices though.

Has this system booted successfully with this card before? What Motherboard, which slot, what other PCIe devices, BIOS rev, etc?

Yes it has, but to be honest I had only done a raid 0 test, the card is new and haven't been able to really get it going. Some research is telling me that the 1gb ddr2 ram maybe bad,

I am running on a dell t5500 pcix-16 slot with a PCIe video card (quadro p2000) and two quad network adapters.

I am expecting that you meant PCI-e x16 and not PCI-X. My first suggestion is to remove your current system as the issue and try it in another box to see if you get a different result. If that is not possible, try to swap the video and RAID cards and see if that makes a difference. If you try to get to UEFI/BIOS prior to the RAID McBIOS, does it still hard lock or continue to BIOS? Does it throw up any error message on the RAID BIOS screen?

HI mwroobel, Yes I meant PCI-e x16, I will see if I can get another system. One thing that I forgot to mention is this is hooked up via the HP SAS EXP Card with bios 2.10 using sff 80888 cable. then the hdds on the hp expander are using the sata breakout cables.

I am able to get to the Dell T5500 bios, as far as I can tell it doesn't throw up any errors on the RAID BIOS screen. just sits there with a blinking cursor.

whats weird is if I let the system boot with out the hdds connected via the sff 8088 cable its ok, then I connect the sff 8088 cable it seems to work, I can check the hdds, make a raid array, etc.

One thing I forgot to try and will do that tomorrow is hooking up the hdds directly to the Areca card, but I thought I had already done that with same result.

I will also try swapping the cards.

It seems like the card is fine if I use Raid only, if I put the drives in passthrough or put the card in jbod, then it will hang at the raid card bios.

I was able to get a different computer, card is now working as expected, jbod, raid. Etc.

So it's something with my computer, how weird.

I still vet weird voltage though

This may be dumb but is there a cable compatibity list? I think I found that the sas-breatout and sata breakout cables I have dont work with arc-1880xi-12?

I have the card working with a new cable I bought.
 
Do you have forward or reverse breakout cables? They are not interchangeable.

Thank you, that's what I am doing now. The sata breakout cables worked at first with RAID, then my system died so I got a "new" motherboard and power supply. when I put it all back together is when I started having issues. Before i was just running in RAID mode, then when I got the different board etc I started looking at the card and feautres, testing jbod, Raid and passthrough and thats when started getting the problems.

I wonder if board is bad or something too?

I am first testing my system without the card to double check for any issues. I am not sure what the issue is yet but I sometimes get wrong voltages in the HW monitor on the web gui, also sometimes it will hang at boot or timeout at the scanning.

I ran memtest overnight and it passed, no issues. Now I am checking the system bios, drivers, and trying to find a way to read the voltages. Also checking firmware on the HDDs.

other than buying new ram there is no way to test the 1GB ddr2 module, right?

So just to try it I disabled the bios on the arc-1880 card and now the card is working as it should. JBOD/RAID, passthrough, etc. There must be a bios compatibilty with my workstation.

I got an Areca ARC-1220 8-port SATA RAID controller card with 5 hard drives attached. Since 1 of the drives is going bad, I decided to remove it. Now I understand that I should be able to simply hot-unplug it with the system running, but I saw the "Offline Raid Set" option in the web management console (ArcHttp) and in the user manual, so I said "why not", and I clicked it to offline the whole RAID set. All drives spun down and I removed the problematic one. Now the question is, how do I ge the RAID set back online ? I see no option for it in the web console. There's just the "Activate Raid Set" which says "No Raid Set Exists For Requested Opteration" and "Rescue Raid Set" (not sure if this is applicable). My RAID set is otherwise healthy and backed up so data loss is not a concern at this time. I understand it will become degraded when brought online but I don't see a way to bring it online again without rebooting the whole host server computer (if that will do it at all). Any ideas?

What purpose does "Offline Raid set" serve anyway. User manual says this (but I'm not sure what the point is if RAID drives can just be hot-swapped and if you can't bring the set back online after offlining it):

6.5.8 Offline Raid Set
This function is for customer being able to unmount and remount a multi-disk volume. All Hdds of the selected RAID set will be put into offline state, spun down and fault LED in fast blinking mode. User can remove those Hdds and insert new Hdds on those empty slots without needing power down the controller.

I have an old Areca 1220 in a Ubuntu system I'm trying to finally retire after 15 years or so of faithful service. I'm doing a massive rsync to the new box, and when I hit a particular file (it seems) the transfer dies. The machine chokes and becomes almost unusably unresponsive - can't ssh into it any more, Ubuntu GUI is more than the usual sluggish, and I'm forced to restart.

At first I thought the 10gbit adapter I put into the box for the occasion was overheating, but the behavior continues after removing that and moving back to the Gig LOM. I worried that I'd toasted the Areca-1220 since it was snuggled right up against the 10gbit adapter. I monitor all my boxes very closely, so I knew the RAIDs were all normal on the Ubuntu box, but if it wasn't the networking, the Areca was the only thing left that really could be going wrong I thought.

So I checked the error log on the Areca:

I've had plenty of failed drives on my Areca RAID servers in the past, but I can't remember a failure quite like this. Should I just replace the drive, or is there some other, better path to take? Any advice?

I replaced the drive in IDE Channel #06, did a (hopefully) final rebuild on the array. Rsync went fine once the error(s) were cleared. The server is off and serving as cold backup until I shuffle things successfully on the new server.

Still puzzles me the drive wasn't failed out of the array. I mean, either it should have compensated for the bad blocks with parity info from the other drives, or it should have failed the drive. Hanging on read but cheerfully showing the array as normal is a crap strategy.

My impression is that my other Areca cards have been more reliable than this 1220 though. I think I have a 16xx and a 18xx in two other servers I'm decommissioning. Both soon to be on Ebay, if anyone cares.
 
Was the drive actually bad ? Did S.M.A.R.T. show reallocated sectors or Read Error Rate or something else increase ? I think Areca's tools (I use ArcHttp on Windows) don't show any actual useful SMART data (raw data values), you need to use other tools for it. When my ARC-1220 reported Reading Errors on CH5 I actually did have Media Error Count increase to 12 on CH5 hard drive (SMART showed Read Error Count at 632 and Pending secor count 5).

Well, it could be a few things that get more involved to test as they go on. Before you do ANYTHING, make sure you have a good and current backup of your array (which is of course a MOST important thing to have at all times). First, shut the machine down and pull all the SAS cables off the controller and see if the problem resolves. If the problem persists, next try the card in another slot/machine to see if power delivery changes (though slot power issues are usually under voltage). The next option would be a complete wipe of the card and reset of the parameters. Unfortunately, it looks like the voltage regulator(s) on your card are failing and from a number of cards that I have seen exhibit this issue it may be time to replace it.

Hmm ok, thanks, I will double check that stuff when I can, I was using the hp expander but now its the hdds are hooked up directly. Luckily I dont have a raid setup going yet. all backed up. One thing I forgot to mention is it doesnt always show the weird volategs, someitmes it will show the correct ones?

How would I complete wipe of the card and reset of the parameters? I haven't found a factory default type setting.

I hope I dont have a bad card, I just got it used though just recently. ugh.

If the ram module was bad could that cause issues?
