Problems with Firefox Portable

First of all I should say that my preferred navigator program is Firefox, and particularly in its Portable version.

Couldn't make Chrome work for me, quite lacking in its available dictionaries, which do not include all the ones I need, and other things I didn't like in it.

And the problem I have with the "standard" Mozilla Firefox is that I change my c: HDDs quite often, and I don't want to fill in all the passwords I have for everything, and I never learnt how to transfer that data from one HDD or SSD to another.

Well, some years ago I discovered Firefox Portable, and it became my choice. I can copy it completely to another HDD, and I will not only have all my passwords, but also all the pages I had been using on my previous HDD.

The problem is that something has started happening, that when I launch the program after 4 or 5 times it says there was a problem, and when you run it again it crashes, and when you run it it has lost all the pages that were open before the crash.

The solution I had found to temporarily saving me is to Winrar the program, one that does work fine, and when it crashes just to Unrar the file.

Perhaps someone can tell me what might be happening, why it crashes and how to prevent that not to happen again.

Let's hope my explanation was clear enough.

If you create a Firefox account your bookmarks and saved passwords will migrate to any machine you use...

Yeah, because that sounds totally secure. /s
As secure as any password manager you use. Nothing is guaranteed. You can always choose not to save passwords to any sensitive sites.
So, what is your suggestion? Start carrying files on USB sticks? Do you know how insecure THAT is? lol.

Unfortunately none of the comments to my query came up with a solution to my problem.

I continue not to understand what causes it. But I does seems related to Firefox updates, so I will definitely block any FF update that might pop up in the future, whatever risk that might bring.

Fortunately I have a winrared file of a working condition, with all the windows and passwords working fine. The problem are particularly the windows, which I want to return to how FF was when I closed it.

But it's a pain in the butt, that's why I'm asking for another solution that might be to my situation. Why does it lose (or refuses to) the register of which windows were open on the previous time?

Can anyone answer me that specific question?

You mean 'browser tabs' by 'windows' right?

If im understanding correctly, you want to close firefox, and when it opens again, you want all your tabs to be the same ones you had open last time?

If you open the menu for firefox, do you see an option that says "Restore previous session"? Would that work?

Yes, that is what I always do. But something happens now and then, and now I'm pretty sure with FF updating, that seems to change that: the previous session does not open.

As I said, what has saved me is that I winrared the FF Portable directory, which has all the information I need. And when above's happens I simply restore the old folders.

But I wonder if there's another way out, try to see what in the FF update erases the tabs I had open.

For now I'm rejecting every pop-offer to update, and I guess there's where the problem is.

Pity there's no way to stop updating completely, as Windows allows.

I'm not sure it would be any use asking Mozilla about this, as the questions to them I have seen do not seem to solve any problems.

Do you have another drive that is persistent through new installs? You mentioned your C:\ drive changes frequently, but maybe you could just use the regular version of firefox (or waterfox, my preferred) and symlink the default profile location to another disk? You could also use somthing like mozbackup to backup a profile including all passwords and saved logins, ive been using it forever and it works great.

When it seemed the problem was over, as I was not paying attention to any update FF asked to make, today it stroke again. Twice.

No one can't seem to suggest where is the problem that, after several loadings of the program, the program shuts off by itself, and when it comes back it lost all the windows that were opened.

My guess it is a file that saves all this information and I wonder why it loses the info.

It's very frustrating, and I don't know what else I can tell here that makes someone tell me what to do.

Have you tried asking these questions at Mozilla support forums?
