Windows 10 May 2020 Update release date
Windows 10 May 2020 Update was originally supposed to roll out to mainstream consumers on May 12, but Microsoft pushed it back a bit to patch a zero-day security vulnerability.

A leaked schedule revealed that the update will be released between May 26 and May 28, but a rumour suggests that it will happen on May 28.

This is the reason why no recent Nvidia drivers have been released in the past month.

I was wondering wtf was going on.

I just hope this doesn't break anything or delete files randomly after updating. ( the win update i mean )

OK all you beta testers be sure to install it right upon release, so I know whether I can resume updates next month or so.

been running it for a while from the insider fast ring. works fine, no issues other than having to change back my audio settings(stereo to 5.1).

It can't be any worse than the update I did I think in 2017 with my new 1080ti card =)

Microsoft usually makes a big deal about these major feature updates but they've been really quiet about this...seems like they just released it with little to no fanfare

I was kicked out of my Epic launcher but that is the only real problem I had but I got back in.
That always happens with Steam anyway usually not with Windows 10 updates =)

It's not much visible to most users. WSL2 is one of the few shiny new things.

As a deployment person, I discovered they moved the shortcut .lnk for Notepad. Oh noes, I had to type a few characters. Fixed. Otherwise everything is just the same for me.

I let it do the May update on one machine automatically yesterday. Even with everything backed up I had a lot of anxiety watching it take a long time and do a lot of very out of the ordinary update behavior. Eventually, it seemed to all work itself out. Just wasn't sure it would for a while.

I think they wanted it to be, but didn't force me to make it that way.

so this new update still comes with Legacy Edge installed by default?...Chromium Edge is pretty stable and much better then Legacy Edge so I'm not sure why MS didn't use this opportunity to install it as the default browser

I think I misunderstood you. Unless I'm mistaken it is the chromium based edge, just doesn't need to be your default browser.
edit: so I was mistaken

The Chromium Edge is not included in this release.

Anyone have success using a w7 key for w10 2004 upgrades?
I've always been able to use a w7 pro key to upgrade a w10 home PC.
Tried 4 keys yesterday with no luck
Haven't tried a fresh install yet

I'm confused, at what point during the past Windows 10 upgrades are you entering product keys?

If you do a clean install they still ask for the serial.
Sure, but you can press skip entering key and as long as the board has previously been activated it will reactivate.

But he said he would try a clean install later which tells me he's not doing a clean install and instead doing an upgrade to 2004 which leads back to my original question. It looks like he is booting to the install media, entering a key then performing the upgrade through that process for some reason, which isn't necessary.

Download the ISO in windows, mount it, and run setup. No need to boot to it.

This is a factory w10 home laptop. I have in there past, entered a w7 pro key to change the w10 from home to pro.
Tried it fri night with an hp laptop ..was 1703, upgraded to 2004, then tried to change version with no luck.
Tried it sat am with 2 w10 home Lenovo, one was 1903, one was 1909, both updated to 2004 overnight Friday, tried to change version with no go.
I'll do a test tonight

that doesnt work with oem keys. oem keys only work during setup.

Did 2004, it rolled back the Nvidia drivers to Microsoft default, but otherwise stuff has worked as expected. Still need to dig into the WSL upgrades.

Anything better? Or even noticeable? The bigger changes I saw didn't seem like much but they don't always tell the whole story.

As of last night, both my builds didn’t have access to this update yet through the basic

settings/windows update

option in win 10 settings

??

I am not going to directly go to the link and download it, guess I’ll wait till it pops up.

I decided to use the Windows 10 Update Assistant to get 2004 but it rolls back after the first reboot. I don't currently have any sound card installed, I'm running an NVIDIA GPU with their driver released within the past week, prevented various items from running on startup, using Windows Defender for AV, cleaned up some old services. Not really sure what's making it mad.

I kinda dug through the logs but there's so much information that I don't know exactly where to look or don't understand the errors I see. Maybe it's not coming through Windows Update due to a known issue with my configuration that I've yet to find out about.

The laptop I checked doesn't yet have access either :)

They're rolling it out, so apparently we have to be patient...

Couldn't tell you really. I picked on my Ubuntu 20.04 installation, but haven't really dug into it.

The winget utility is still annoying in that it's difficult or perhaps impossible to specify specific versions of stuff, despite the documentation. I'm likely doing it wrong but they do have a bug for that issue specifically.

I've been on it a few weeks. The only mains things I've really noticed is that all of Microsoft's first-party icons look different and Cortana/Search are now separate. In particular, anything office-suite related like Office, Teams, OneDrive, OneNote, etc. has a black background now.

As far as issues go, my speaker array resets itself to stereo every time I power my PC off. That might be Nvidia-related seeing how they haven't updated their HDMI audio driver in forever. Either way, it didn't start happening until this update, so hopefully MS or Nvidia will fix it soon.
I've also noticed that the Windows disk optimizer/defrag always claims that it has never been run before.

Fuck this, i dont feel like dealing with this on 2 computers. Ruining all of our settings and what not.

Known issue from what I have seen mentioned on a few sites. Not sure if Microsoft has officially acknowledged it or not.

There appears to multiple problems with the 2004 update as you will see reading many complaints including Windows disk optimizer/defrag claiming that it has never been run before. I removed the 2004 update and all is well again. I would suggest that you hold off on the 2004 update with the hope Microsoft will address and repair it?

Honestly, who really gives a flip about that known issue in todays day and age. After all, the defragmentation or with SSD's, the optimization happens in the background, automatically. I cannot even tell you the last time I intentionally opened the defrag application.

It is peculiar people still care about defragging. Maybe there is some edge case thing for it? /shrug.

2004 has been smooth on everything I've put it on so far. Tested out Windows Mixed Reality last night and it worked fine tho aside from a barely discernible UI tweaking (fonts look thicker, color slightly less dark?) it's exactly the same. Think they mentioned they were rolling the Holograms app functions into something else..?

Tested it at work on a few models and it was fine on all of them. Our software etc. all seems fine.

Just installed it on a Dell at work. Everything seems to work fine except Dell Support Assistant won't run. I only use it as an easy way to update the latest drivers and bios. No biggee.

I installed this on my desktop at home and once completed, I could not get to any of my NAS shares. I can ping the IP of the NAS, and I can use the static IP of the NAS in a browser to get to it, but I am unable to reach it via shares. I can't even remap them. Very weird.

You still have spinning disks?

Yes, SSDs are cheap nowadays. Even my USB storage is SSD.
Only problem is the SSD can still be somewhat unreliable. Make sure you have a good backup and don't over hammer the drive with numerous read write going on all the time.
Only thing SSD's are not as good for is if you have lots of pictures, videos, and music. those files chew up a lot of space and SSD are still quite expensive compared to good ol SATA drives. Especially as you get to the larger GB sizes.
