After decades of wanting one, picked up a Sega CD!

Goodwilll online has some deals now and again.
This was bundled with a genesis (pictured is my modded one) and a game gear, all listed under the game gear section.

Sega CD needed a new fuse which is more common than not, genesis works, game gear needs new caps.

Thing is the largest console I have now. Wider than my OG Xbox by a couple inches.

Gonna try to get a few boxed games I want, but it takes easily burned .bin files, so I'll play those for a bit.

Genesis has a RGB tripe bypass kit running through an OSSC for amazing output.

Lol I waited 20 years to pick up the original psx component cable so I feel ya!

How much do these go for? I think my Sega CD and 32x are still sitting in a box in my parents basement.

Sewer Rats is the pinnacle of gaming, in my view. Nothing's surpassed it before or after.

Bram Stoker's Dracula was also pretty sweet, especially the quick cut of Keanu with the Wilhelm scream.

You still need a 32X you slacker :p

Lol, maybe... not as many games I want honestly, but I do love the Genesis so I'll probably get one eventually just to have it.

Usually around the $150 mark for the sega cd unit alone.
32x less than $100 from what I've seen.

I paid $102 for a genesis, sega cd, and a game gear

I played a bit of Snatcher last night. Wish I could afford the legit game, but no copy protection on the sega cd makes it easy to burn copies

I had a SEGA Genesis (early model) with the later model SEGA CD like the one pictured above. It was excessively wide. I also had the 32X for it. I got it for only a handful of games at the time.

Sewer Shark and Sonic CD are some of the best I drove 60 miles for the 32X at age 16 =)

I only have 2 32X games, DOOM and NBA jam, shame there were not a lof of games for it.

Mine was too wide for my folk's entertainment stand, so I had to lay next to the TV on the fireplace. Our dog hated it since it took his favorite place to snooze (I recall him literally sitting there barking at it when I first installed). Hours and hours of Doom on that thing. My favorite title was Lunar Star, the only JRPG apart from Phantasy Star I could stomach.

I never had the Sega CD, but a friend did and all I remember are the horrendous load times.

I did buy a 32x at one point, they were on clearance at Toys R Us. Never could get it to work, brand new out of the box, so I returned it.

Load times on the Sega CD are worlds better than on my PS1. That thing is so slow, even with a new drive installed.

i sold mine w/32x during hard times a few years ago, still regert it. held onto my saturn though.

Eh I doubt that. They both were piss slow but the PS1 was 2x while the Sega cd was 1x.

It boils down to how the data is placed on the disc. It really is comparing apples to oranges though.

Personally, I wouldn't waste the cash on a CD these days. The device isn't well built and it's just a matter of time for death. Get a cart and just load the ISOs. Nobody is making money off that stuff except collectors. If you want the "presentation." Then, buy a dead one.

Sega CD always felt like a pointless waste of time and space, just to add the same effects the SNES used.

And they didn't bother to fix the 64 colors onscreen (so all that CD space went to waste.)

That is the reason why the released Phantasy Star 4 on cartridge instead of CD (not enough of an improvement to sustain any momentum). It was the same reason they had to release the 32X a few years afterward.

I just stuck with my original Genesis, and enjoyed not wait minutes to load games.

After my Gamegear stopped powering-on, I decided to just go with portable emulation (don't fee;l like troubleshooting hardware that old). I still whip out classics like Defenders of Oasis.

I tried to decide on a 32x vs an SNES back then. Thankfully I chose the latter. I had a genesis already.

I loved the Sega CD. It had some of my favorite games ever. Seriously. Silpheed, Eternal Champions CD, Lunar 1 & 2, Sonic CD, Shining Force CD, Dark Wizard, Snatcher, etc.
Most of those were exclusives, too. I think the problem is that people didn't always realize that. Tons of games were just ported and Sega slapped a "CD" after the name. That hurt the games that were actually exclusives.
While it was overpriced and under powered, it had a hell of a library for a system with a pretty limited audience/lifespan.

Sorry dude- the only Platform Exclusives on your list there are Dark Wizard and the Lunar games.

Silpheed and Snatcher were ports from other non-Sega systems, and Shining Force CD was just a port of the Gamegear games. Sonic had 3 other games already (and was bleeding the franchise dry with a fourth entry in 2 years.) Eternal Champions was also available on Megadrive a year earlier.

Lunar was the "big reason" to own a Sega CD, but it's combat and incredibly-convolutedsequence to open new areas gets quite repetitive. The second game is even more boring than the first.

It's a disappointing system - you just came late to the party (and assumed this was all new!) I may give Dark Wizard a try though!

sorta correct
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Sega_CD-only_games
35/200 were "exclusive".

wrong thread?!

And how many pf those were system sellers?

Lunar was really the only one (and Sonic, if you one of the rare folks who think four games in two years is not too much Sonic!)

I had not even heard of Dark Wizard until you mentioned it here, and Eternal Champions II was such a dud they never made the third game they originally proposed.

It was a dud!

yeah that wasnt me listing off games. i was pointing out that you were sorta correct.

ya'll mf'ers got some issues to work out with yourselves!

I don't even care.
I'm over here enjoying my SegaCD and playing the shit out of Snatcher.

It's mated up to my original Genesis Model 2 from childhood that I have hung onto. I know the SegaCD isn't remembered fondly but it's special to me and I love having it as part of my retro gaming collection.

Eternal Champions CD and Sonic CD were sequels - not ports. They were also way better than the prior games. Eternal Champions 3 never came out because Sega was trying to make Virtua Fighter happen in the US, which they never succeeded in doing. One of the developers used to be pretty active on Prodigy (yeah, that dates me) and actually went over the whole situation well before it was officially cancelled. He even posted the fax he got from Sega of Japan that mentioned they only wanted to focus on promoting one fighting game.
The other "ports" were for Japanese computers. The Sega CD versions were basically the only way anyone in the US or Europe were going to play Snatcher and Silpheed. Silpheed in particular got a pretty big overhaul, too. Shining Force CD might have been a combo of 2 Game Gear games, but that's pretty niche, and per the online reviews - they added new content and overhauled the graphics.

I always wanted the SegaCD so bad. So has anyone mentioned Night Trap?

Also, I played Double Switch on Sega Saturn, I think it was originally for SegaCD. That game was so good.

Wow Slipheed, I loved that game. I just realized I never had a Genesis/Sega CD. My parents had a LaserActive https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LaserActive I just did some googling, these things are not cheap on the used market.

Snatcher is great on the SegaCD. Unless you just HAVE to see that underaged shower scene from the PC Engine version, and don't mind playing all in Japanese, then the Sega CD version is actually better. That's coming from a Turbografx/PCEngine junkie too. The FM music on the Sega version is top notch.

Enjoy your toy!

There are several good games for the SegaCD.

I had one of the relatively rare Sega Genesis CDX units. Sega CD in the front, Genesis slot in the back.

Was $400 new which was pretty Gucci for 1994 (about $692 in 2020 dollars). One of my friends ended up “borrowing” it in the late 90s and I never saw it again. If you look up what those are selling for now, fuck me sideways!

Sonic CD is/was still my favorite sonic game of all time, it was awesome!

Congrats on the score OP!

I picked up another Sega CD unit for $60.
Needed a fuse like the first otherwise it works fine.

Plan on pairing it with another Genesis with a triple bypass and making a little profit.

Personally, I use a MiSTer for my classics, but I love seeing people use and restore old hardware. You’re doing good work!

Even buying and selling, if there is some decent refurb work in between, very cool. If I had the time, I’d buy up a bunch of SuperGrafx systems, recap them, polish them to a shine, pair them with an SD system, and move them on.

Yeah, I don't want to just buy and flip stuff. I want to refurb and update for people to enjoy again.

Full disassembly, new capacitors, fuse, cleaning, etc.
It helps that I enjoy doing all this. I don't expect to make much profit, but there is a little bit there.

Sega does what nintendon't :p

Grab a copy of Sewer Shark and you're set!
