Last laptop I had was a HP i3-370m 2.4ghz HT dual core, Radeon 5650m 1GB GPU, 8GB ddr3, and HDD bought at $600 from a regular $800 a decade ago.

Did OK with gaming.

Looking for atleast 15.6inch, 16GB dual channel, a quadcore with HT, and can play games, 256GB SSD.
Num pad, HDMI out, HDD bay, SD card reader would be great. I have a external DVD burner so an internal is optional, could throw in a HDD caddy in it if the height is right.
Had a Logitech g700 mouse I loved, so need to save some money for a like mouse that can be both wired or not.
I'm on the road all the time so I'm mixed about brand and durability.
Amazon's site is a hot mess to browse on my cell, don't know how the desktop version looks.
Newegg is ok, been out of the loop on what's good parts wise and last time I bought something from them, they didn't have sellers.
Going to use the covid stimulus check when, and hopefully get it.

Since you are waiting, the AMD 4000 APUs (Zen 2 + Vega 7nm) are trickling out, and its performance appears to blow away everything Intel can throw at it. Big upheavals in the laptops market are happening, so the best recommendation at this moment is to wait a tiny bit, before looking for more information. Usually waiting for new tech isn't a solid recommendation, but the new tech is coming out now, not a few months from now.

Intel has already been desperately cutting prices and will probably panic launch a "10th gen" lineup of 14nm CPUs for dGPU laptops, soon (to join the 10th gen 10nm and 14nm ultrabook chips they already have).

Since you aren't looking to spend money right this second, and the laptop market is being completely upended right now, I feel it's best to wait a few weeks, at least.

I'm just trying see what's good.

What in your opinion is something one might consider waiting for? Anything to read or catch up on in terms of trying to get that daily driver go between work / gaming laptop that's MAYBE portable?

I have a 8+ year old laptop which needs to be disposed of.

Quick searches are sending me all over the place. Can't seem to condense the search on my end.. curious where you'd start??

Cheap laptop then get a used Nintendo Switch.
Gaming laptop > Nintendo Switch. ;)
Currently looking at atleast a MSI GF63 i5 1650.
If a 2nd stimulus check comes, atleast a HP Pavilion G15 with i7, 1660ti, 16gb.
Or a HP Omen 15 i7, 2060ti, 32gb, 144hz screen.

I'm in the same boat, looking for a good gaming laptop in the 1k range. Blue ray player/burner or dvd burner would be great, too, but doesn't seem like any laptops come with them now...

I rarely used ODDs so on my last laptop I replaced it with a HDD caddy, popped in a 1.5TB 12.5mm drive, and threw the DVD burner in a caddy. Having 2.5TB in my LT was great.

So, looks like HP went full retard with their Omen 17t by only having 1 m.2 slot on their 2060s and 1660ti s while the 2070s and 2080s have 2 slots......
Was on the edge of getting a 17t 2060 just for that 2nd slot because I'm a filthy digital hoarding whore, but not for a extra $500 for a 2070, atleast it's not a Max Q version like on the 15t.
I wonder if you can just soldier a m.2 connector on and give HP the middle finger because quite frankly I have to put my tech degree to some use? Or are there other components you need, or they disabled it also in the BIOS?
Bad HP, BAD!

notice how it says "value" in the title? there had to be compromises and thats one.

Glad I watched his review, I was thinking about to bite on that model, others said it had 2 slots, but they had the 2070s and 2080s. HP could have easily added that 2nd slot and slight bumped up the price to not be too greedy, making it a selling point to move up to a 17inch than a 15inch, For a 17inch that was a poor move when the others in the line have 2 slots. Even on their 2070s and 2080s, there's not option for a 2nd SSD. Someone need their ass kicked over there.

So I have been out of the PC building and gaming scene for quite a while now. I used to build my own PC rigs for myself, friends, family, etc. However, years ago I chose an off the grid lifestyle, so a laptop is a little more ideal for me.

I am not exactly up to date on current technology of the past 10 years, but it seems mostly the same. So I am not sure what the best option for a laptop would be, or where to find the best deal, and what to look for, these days.

I used to order a lot of my parts from Newegg and a couple of other suppliers back in the day. I see Newegg looks like it's still a good option but was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for me?

What I want/need in a laptop-

USB ports. I would prefer at least 4 for peripherals like keyboard, mouse, hard drives, etc.

No cooling issues. The last laptop, an HP, would overheat constantly.

Preferably a bigger screen. My HP was a 17inch

Best graphics card / processor for the price

Something I can upgrade later on down the road, this needs to last me at least 5 years. My last HP lived about 10 years.

And a Numpad built in would be great, but I wouldn't cry if it didn't have one :D

And another question, can I remove windows 10 from these new laptops and install windows 7? Just because I have heard windows 10 is terrible and a lot of games I still play have issues with it.

As I said I am working with a budget of about 1k USD.

Thanks to anyone who can help me out on this.
