Why does Doom Eternal suck?

I guess you just skipped this mission, then.

Hahaha......I completely hated that level, but not so much the jumping, I have this thing about heights.
Even in video games.
Classic is the bridge in Half-Life 2, literally makes me nauseous.
But, yeah that level was a little maddening, but all it required was mastering the double jump.
Took me about 2 tries and I suck at that stuff.
No monkey bars, no moving platforms, no closing doors, no walls to grab.................
I wish I had realized it was the future of Doom games.

Is it me or has Doom turned into some kind of jumping game?
Maybe I'm getting too old, but there's way too much jumping around from platform to platform, swinging from things,
trying to "stick" to walls......

Look, all I want to do in Doom is shoot the bad guys and chainsaw shit.
If I could, I'd ask for a refund.

id can stuff their jumping......
Doom 3 is still my favorite Doom of all time.

LoL......
I just loaded up Dhewm3 and the Doom3 Redux mod 2 days ago.
I love the game, its even better now with all the mods.....
and no fucking jumping.

I loved the Doom remake. Something about that game and the way it felt was near perfect.

Doom Eternal somehow lost all of that. I can't put my finger on it but everything about it seems worse, gameplay, graphics, story, even the music. The whole thing just feels "off" to me, like it's incomplete.

Yeah I know what you mean. Nevermind the who cares it's Doom excuse Id software seems to be spouting.

Yep. I don't like the jumping around parts in eternal. Why add a dash refill to an area just so you have to dash a bunch to move on. Jump bars and jump pads clinging to walls... I don't find the jumps hard or challenging just stupid. How bad ass is the doom guy if he has to run and use jump bars like some gay gymnast to avoid his demons...

DOOM 2016 isn't a remake.

I'd love to comment on it, but I can't get the damn game to run long enough to enjoy it.

I don't like the forced melee. Seems like it is required and every other kill has to be melee to get health or ammo. I don't mind it, just wish it was optional.

So I was really excited for this game, I just played the DOOM 2016 from start to finish again to get ready.

Not only is Eternal not as good as 2016, I'm not even sure it's a good game. I'll still probably finish it, because I don't like dropping games, and I'll save hope it can get better.

I don't have a problem with jumping or climbing, I liked those parts in 2016 and they are not the worst thing. My problem is that the game isn't fun.

Just moving around, jumping, shooting. Something is wrong, it's off. And I've played quite a lot of DOOM 2016, it was perfection.

I don't know what happened, but it seemed like they rewrote the core control logic, and it's nowhere near as tight as it was in 2016.

It's sad, because there is a lot to like in the game with the graphics and scenery. I'll finish it but they messed up.

I am enjoying this more than 2016. Some of the jumping can be annoying. Excessive melee can be annoying to. But I prefer the map design overall. I thought 2016 was dreadful to get through, utterly boring. This I find acceptable.

Actually, I take back what I said. The game is surprisingly very good.

The problem was that the default gamepad settings are not great.

I spent about 2 or 3 hours tweaking and testing the controls, now they are basically as good as 2016.

The game is really fun now. Sorry for the confusion. I'm about 6 hours in, I love all the stuff to unlock.

I mean, I wish the default control was better but the game is not broken, just poor choice of the defaults.

I really like MOST of this game. I just really dislike the repetition of the chainsaw. It really pulls me out of the game rather than in. I don't even mind the jumping anymore. That part kinda settles into the background for me now, and has become transparent. The chainsaw is stupid though. No amount of anyone telling me it's strategic is going to change my mind there. I KNOW what strategic is in a game like this. I'd say the System Shock games are strategic where lower ammo situations are concerned. Doom Eternal's chainsaw is not that. It just wrecks the immersion. Sure, maybe once in a rare while I might like to cut a demon in half. But not every ten seconds. Otherwise, good game.

Initially, I too was put-off by Doom Eternal "feeling" so different than Doom 2016. However, about mid-way through, I started to adapt to it and (aside from the ridiculous jumping puzzles) really enjoyed it otherwise. Of course, I'd love to see where the franchise would have headed had Carmack still been in charge. I think he was the main reason a lot of the earlier versions were so good.

Playing with a gamepad? Well there's your problem. I definitely do not enjoy the game as much when I play it on my Xbox as I do my PC, and the controller is the primary problem. There are too many actions in this game to map well to a controller and it doesn't offer the speed needed in some situations.

The chainsaw keeps the pace of the game. If it didn't have it, and it did random drops, it would remove the perceived control/power of the player. I'd argue in 2016 it was there for pure glory. This time it has a purpose and it keeps the pressure on the gamer. You always have the ability to reload. You just have to do a lot of micro managing. Honestly, it's hard going back to other "hardcore" shooters after Eternal because they all feel weak and slow by comparison. You're always moving in Eternal in a way that isn't really present in other titles.

It completely clicked with me. The only problem I have with the game is the sheer lack of power given to the player for the first 4-5 hours. Once you get your full arsenal, it's a vastly better game.

I'm 14 hours into the game now (I guess close to the end) and I really like it. It still think 2016 was better for what it did at the time, but Eternal is solid.

I love jumping and climbing, even though it is a little clunky I think it's a welcome edition. I also had more fun finding secrets, the level design seems better.

I do wish there was more ammo, they kind of force you to keep switching weapons and I find many times I run out of ammo and have to run around punching imps.

This can be a good or bad thing. On one hand, it adds strategy and also makes the fights more intense. On the other hand, it loses some of the appeal of 2016, where you could shotgun your way through the whole game.

Overall I think it's a solid game. They took some chances that may or may not have worked out, but it's still fun and something different at least.

I see why you and others might like it. That won’t change my mind. It always was for glory just like the gauntlet in Quake. I don’t think it should have become central to Doom. I’ve never had aspirations to be a lumberjack.

I’m fine with the melee in general, and fine with the chainsaw as an occasional thing. It does absolutely nothing for me including setting the pace nor does it give me any illusions of control or power. It does exactly the opposite.

You are totally free to enjoy it. I wouldn’t think any less of anyone with a differing opinion. However, it really takes me out of the game.

Doom 3 and 2016 were pretty flawless for the way I like to play Doom. I also think Eternal is pretty cool in general. Just not into the forceful approach they took with the saw.

A game shouldn’t lay all this hardware at your fingertips and then make you jump through mundane hoops to use it. That’s not empowering. That’s putting me in a box. It doesn’t even make any sense. Saw a demon and ammo?!?!

I couldn't agree with you more.

I much prefer Eternal. I could barely finish 2016. Mainly because of the map design. It is smaller but overall seems more vertical with corridors to rush around in rather than a giant empty box. I think there is too much emphasis on melee though as you mentioned, it is pretty much required.

I don't think it was a superb game, just average. I'd consider 2016 to be below average just because it was so boring to me even if there was nothing wrong with the game from a technical perspective.

A lot of the stuff Doom Eternal does is rather quiet and reserved...even though the game is so loud. It's a rather wonderfully designed game. I think if you play it more, it will "click." There's zero fluff in the combat. What I read out of your post is that the game is "intense." Which, is a definite criticism. As, you have to be on the whole time and juggle a lot of information constantly. Personally, I find this exhilarating and unparalleled in the modern combat arena. The chainsaw is just a method to keep the player moving and to give them agency in resource management. If you're aware...you'll always have ammo for your favorite weapon. It's a glorious dance.

That is very well put, and other than VERY specifically the chainsaw, I agree. The whole “dance” thing is definitely present. I like the other parts of the melee system too.

This dance of combat is what makes me love the flow of combat in Sundered.

I want the combat to be intense, require movement, and thinking on one’s feet. Without breaking that flow. The saw is the very thing that breaks the flow in my case. Eternal mostly does all this for me. I just don’t like how it feels like it takes a lot of the emphasis off of the weapons that Doom is founded on. That choice should be up to me.

Still, it’s very well designed overall.

Don’t take my posts the wrong way. I really like the game. It is only the chainsaw mechanic for ammo that I don’t like. If there were 7-10% more ammo dumps that would even be enough to give me that illusion of choice.

They tuned it so heavily on the saw that even the illusion of choice and one’s own strategic values just seem a little too distant for ME for a Doom game.

I’ve been playing games of all kinds since the late 70s. I’m no stranger. This is completely a matter of my own taste. Not something I can condemn as straight up wrong, and also not something that I’ll likely change my mind on. But then, I already like the game, so I don’t need convincing anyway. ;)

Just beat the game. About 18 hours total, which was just about the perfect length for a game like this.

Honestly, it was really quite great. I'm glad I gave it a chance after the bad start (which may not have been the game's fault since I'm playing on Proton and it could have been a Linux specific issue).

The fights were so intense, way more action packed than 2016, and also very strategic with the weapons and with the upgrades, it's a whole other game.

I mean, 2016 was great for what it was, a solid reboot of the franchise, but Eternal is a more ultimately satisfying game. Well worth playing.

That sucks! Does your PC not like Vulkan or do you think something else is going on?

It seems to like Vulkan just fine with 2016. I played that a lot and never had issues. I opened a ticket with Bethesda, they had me do a bunch of stuff including a "clean boot", which is basically turning off all services etc, and I still can't play the game. Freezes randomly and screen turns black. I even cranked it down to the lowest possible resolution and graphics settings and it still freezes. Can be in game menu, can be during play, doesn't matter and there is no rhyme or reason to it.

What I found while playing the game b4 I got it refunded is that I was always out of fuel for the chainsaw and thus making me evade everything to try and find some ammo which got boring realy fast.

I might still pick it up on a later date for very cheap to give it another go but I did buy the all in version for 89€ orso and that was not worth it to me given that this is imo not a real doom game.
Last 2 'id" games ( Rage 2 and Doom eternal) are not worthy of their legacy and the studio's games are for me no longer a blind must buy on release. (and yes I know it's avalanche that made rage 2 but it was under id supervision)

That's so weird.
I had a similar issue with The Division 2. No matter what I did it would crash to desktop within 45 min of starting. Sometimes it would happen 5 minutes in sometimes 44 minutes in but I have yet to be able to play that game for 46 min. It was the only game I had any real issues with on that PC during the 6 years it was my primary.

Well, all of this discussion has made me want to finish up the game. I always intended to, but took a hiatus to play Hollow Knight and Resolutiion. However, now I'm back in the mood. :D
