Sounds like the great firewall of China just got a little taller.

Taiwan news is reporting that China is banning online gaming and chatting to anywhere outside the Great Firewall.

"The communist regime is said to have noticed an authority vacuum in online multiplayer games, which enables people to freely socialize without monitoring. Local metropolises are scrambling to draft laws to expand the scope of online censorship in video games and even prohibit gamers from meeting and chatting with people on the other side of the Great Firewall, according to LTN, which cited news from a Chinese gaming forum."

As far as online enabled single player games, this is added.

"One-player online games will also be subject to surveillance, as a new real-name mechanism is going to be implemented in China. Also, the new law will not allow for zombies and plagues, map editing, roleplaying, as well as organizing a union in games — regulations which are believed to be inspired by the sensitive content made by Joshua Wong."

Got to love communist dictatorships. At least PUBG may become playable again.

Normally I hate authoritarian governments and censorship but in this case, I'm super happy and hope the CCP blocks every single Chinese gamer from being able to connect outside of China. Those guys have been nothing but a plague for online gaming w/constant hacks in every game they infest.

I have heard that a good portion of Chinese gold farming is a product of prison labor. If that's the case, I wouldn't expect it to grind to a halt.

Might depend what type of prison labor. It may not be official state prison labor but like a form of indentured servitude/slavery that regional CCP officials turn a blind eye to. In that case it won’t continue since they don’t have influence over the great firewall rules.

Who is surprised by this? seriously if anyone is still surprised by the stuff china does you need a rock thrown to your head

indentured servitude/slavery

Of course they would have indentured servitude.

I'm equally disgusted with some of the comments here.

I'm pretty sure everyone here would like to see real efforts by pretty much every single government and business and even individuals do something, anything, to rebuke the Chinese government in most any way possible; if there's some schadenfreude it's clearly incidental.

Agree 100%. I do feel badly for the Chinese people (but Chinese gold farmers still suck.)

On one hand PvP just got a bit better, on the other hand I’d rather deal with cheaters than them being unjustly silenced. This is a truly sad piece of news for their people.

I dont care about china at all. Unless thier people WANT to be free and rise to the occassion to fight for it I cant afford to waste empathy on them.

Plus the bonus is that pubg will be playable again haha
They do ... they’re protesting all the time.

Stop being so petty with your gaming experience. It's never a positive thing when you hear about human rights getting stomped on like this. I'm equally disgusted with some of the comments here.

To be honest it's kinda why I stopped frequenting [H]. I love this site, but since Kyle decided to step down from running the main site, the forum's have become more and more anti china. I personally don't care about the current Chinese government, but I've seen people on this forum attack even just the people of China.

Concerning China and the banning thing. It eats at my core beliefs as an American. But I do sit there and think....how the hell do you control 10x's the people that we have, all condensed on one coast. I would imagine our own personal government would be VERY different. Tango mentioned above that "Unless their people WANT"...the funny thing is I'm sure there' sa shit ton of people in China who wants something different...but they are also dealing with a government who is very much okay with basically running their people into a pulp with tanks and washing their remains away into the sewers...and those 10,000 they kill? Well thats basically just 3 blocks worth of people and their ideals just wash away.

I will admit though, the Chinese and Brazilian culture of "Cheating" during gaming (it's a thing btw) is very interesting. I had a long discussion with my buddy who works at a major developer in the game industry about it. Completely different mindset.

No, its just now Activision will have all their servers run by Chinese rules.

Basically, China's new rules are the world's new rules, because the world wants Chinese money.

world of warships is good to demonstrate it..
the chinese servers are years behind and have all sorts of visual and name changes.

I find Russians to be worse.
Chinese are gold farmers, but Russians use hacks and steal accounts.

To be honest

Anti China is an interesting view. I detect some thinly veiled sentiments in your post.

For example, it's not "cheating." It's cheating. You call a mindset that favors and applauds blatant exploitation of a game (but also applied to commercial contracts, business dealings generally, intellectual property, etc) to be a mere cultural phenomenon. And it is not. It's a character flaw.

The censorship offends me, but the rest of the (gaming) world will rightfully breathe a sigh of relief.

Damn, I better hurry up and get my mail order bride from there before it's too late.

Ironic. They're raiding all the surrounding countries for women. The one-child policy resulted in the disparity of females in China. If you only get one, you want a boy - right? A few years ago, there were about 40 million less Chinese women than men. That's 40 million men with no chance - zero chance - of having a Chinese wife.

I'm actually more angry with western entertainment media who in their hypocrisy bends to every will of their chinese overlords.

If nobody has the balls to stand up to the regime we'll al live in the communist dictatorship by proxy. And I bet some would be happy about it, until they come for their stuff.

Sucks for the average China citizen.
If this stands, it will be interesting how it changes game designs now that the China market will be split from the rest of the world.

Agreed... and not just entertainment media. Any company that bends over backwards for Chinese money is guilty of enabling Chinese censorship.

It's why garbage devs like bluehole (pubg) refused to region lock and made their other customers suffer that huge wave of cheating. It's pathetic.

As much as people might dislike China, this should definitely not be encouraged. What a shit show their government is.
This really is not so bad compared to other things China have been doing to contain both the spread of the virus and the information about it from their citizens. The scientist who was letting people know about covid19 and wouldnt recant his statements and admit wrongdoing "suddenly died".

Threesome bro. :p

And yet a billion people sit back and let it happen.......So many people in China, but they are all so complacent to just let their Government do what ever they want and do nothing about it?

Indoctrination and censorship goes a long way towards controlling a population. I would wager at least 70% of the population don't have any idea that their lives can have more freedom. Of the remaining 30%, I bet most of them benefit from communist rule.

Most Chinese people under 30 have no idea about the Tienanmen Square Massacre; it's been scrubbed from their history. Most are probably taught to believe Western lifestyle is bad and their current lifestyle is much better. Keep most of the people in poverty and the more educated people under control, and the likelihood of rebellion is low. Most rebellions start with the middle and upper class, not the lower class.

They are terrified. Mao murdered over 25 million of his own. Commies like them, Bernie, and their ilk are never to be trusted.
