Why does Doom Eternal suck?

Is it me or has Doom turned into some kind of jumping game?
Maybe I'm getting too old, but there's way too much jumping around from platform to platform, swinging from things,
trying to "stick" to walls......

Look, all I want to do in Doom is shoot the bad guys and chainsaw shit.
If I could, I'd ask for a refund.

id can stuff their jumping......

hmpff, I haven't purchased this one, but a buddy of mine who is a big Doom fan said this was the best one yet. GoTY material he said, which makes me laugh because he always says that and Doom never wins GoTY.

I felt the same way. I actually enjoyed the last entry from a single player perspective - but you're totally right. I barely played the new one for a couple of hours and just couldn't get into it. And yet it's receiving extremely high accolades across the board.

Hope that's not the case. I've been binging on Ghost Recon Breakpoint the last several weeks but planned on buying it when I finally get bored with GR:B.

From what I can tell from game play videos it's just a sequel to Doom 2016 which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I think it was hoping for more of a horror vibe like Doom 3 and the PS1 versions as opposed to just running and gunning to heavy metal music.

I'm a bit under 2 hours in, the fighting when actually happening is usually quite frantic, then you get completely pulled out of the moment by the jumping bits which so far for me have been annoying but doable.

Not saying it is a bad game (yet anyways) but so far it is the worst doom game I have played.

It is an excellent game, making my way thru it now. The platform sections are literally like 2 minutes a piece, if that, and are a good breather from the rest of the action.

My only gripe is that in the first 15 minutes it bombards you with all of its systems, which can seem intimidating and overwhelming at first. However, now that I am about 10 hours in, they are very straightforward systems that I think are very nice additions.

It doesn't suck, though. It is a small step down from 2016 and a kickass game.

Keep going. The first few hours of the game feel miserable until you build your arsenal and passives up. After that it feels amazing.

I'm with the OP, I feel Doom 2016 is a much more enjoyable experience. I gave up on Doom Eternal after about four hours because of the jumping and other frustrations. Game looks great and runs well even on my relic of a system, but I'm just not getting into it. Yet I have replayed Doom 2016 multiple times.......................

I must be getting old too. Oh well, I've moved on to Metro Exodus and it's DLCs and am having a much more enjoyable experience.

This has been a popular opinion since its release- DOOM Eternal is a sequential next game but feels like no sequel to me.

I can't argue that the systems have increased in complexity (flame belch, mega punch, two types of grenades), or that the gameplay itself isn't more challenging. There is a lot more to do, but the question is, do you like doing it?

You must play within the game's rules and if you do not, you will be punished severely (on Ultra-violence and higher difficulties). What I mean by this:
  • if you are low on ammo, you must chainsaw, there is no other option*
  • certain enemies have certain weaknesses, you can ignore them, but you will burn through ammo
  • movement skills must be mastered (dash, double-jump)
  • the Marauder must be dealt with in a very specific manner
  • 1ups... in a DOOM game?
What I found about 2016 (I replayed it a bunch before Eternal came out) is that you are given a lot of freedom to deal with enemies. In that way, can you call it unpolished? Not sure. Is Eternal superior because you constantly feel rushed, stressed, and pushed to attack/react? Not sure.

It is odd, though, that I find DOOM Eternal feels a lot more like Rage 2 than DOOM 2016.

* I think ammo will spawn based on what you use... sometimes. I haven't figured out how exactly, but I know in Slayer Gates I find ammo for the guns I end up favoring (i.e. if I use the chaingun I'll find more heavy ammo, etc.). This is not scientific but a "feeling."

I was ready to jump on the 2016 Doom is better bandwagon at first.

Once you get enough weapons to play around with, and get a handle on the new play style the game starts to shine.
I started to really enjoy the game (minus a few platforming areas) about 1/3 of the way through the game. The game does get much easier as you unlock all your upgrades as well.

I prefer 2016 over Eternal, but man, both are amazing.

All of these, +1.

DOOM 2016 was an 11/10 game and DOOM Eternal is a 9/10 game, IMHO. I was initially not a fan of DOOM Eternal but as many have said, it got MUCH better when I finally realized it is not DOOM 2016.

That said, I did enjoy DOOM 2016's multiplayer. I played maybe 60-80 hours of it total and got good enough that I regularly finished matches at or near the top. DOOM Eternal's multiplayer seems wayyy too unbalanced towards Doomguy. Out of about 20 total matches, I won as Doomguy all but once, and I lost as a demon all but once. No plans to keep at the DOOM Eternal MP at this time.

After the success of Titanfall/Apex Legends, everything has to copy it. That includes Borderlands 3 (functional duck and slide, plus a dedicated climb).

Jedi: Fallen Order is just TitanFall 2, mechless, in third-person (but that's to be expected, as they are both EA properties).

I haven't played Eternal yet, but I can see why you have the complaints. I'm mostly holding off because you have to create a Bethesda account just fr one game.

Interesting. Can you provide specific examples of how Eternal is copying Titanfall and Apex Legends? Because I still get major Metroid Prime vibes from the game.

Like I said, I havn't played it. I'm just assuming they're ripping off Titanfall just like everyone else.

watched a very few yt video and it was a instant turnoff. absolutely no interest same as doom 2016.

IMO it's more complicated than it needs to be, to it's own detriment. The multiple "extra" weapons with cooldowns on separate keys, the jumping puzzles, and the micromanagement of ammo and health by having to do the chainsaw and glory kills just feels like too much. Doom 2016 was great and didn't need any of that.

Not saying that it's a bad game necessarily, it's just different and IMO the poorer for it.

If there is a thing that ruins Doom Eternal, it is not the jumping and climbing, it is the Marauder fights. Those assholes ruin the flow of the fight and are beyond annoying to fight. Fucking hell those fights are NOT fun. Unlike bosses in Dark Souls beating them is not even rewarding when you finally manage to kill one after fifth attempt or more.

I have played the game through once but as long as Marauders are in the game I will rather gouge my eyes out than replay the game on even harder difficulties.

The combat is great. The platforming, once you get it, is not that hard and can feel cool. It's also put there to help you learn. There are massive arenas later in the game where you can (you don't have to at all) use those handle bars, walls, and the shotgun grapple to pull off some INSANE stuff.

not really what I mean but if you aren't going this fast in combat, you doing it wrong

I think Doom 2016 was more impressive because it was all so new, and this stands on it's shoulders. It's great though.

You know what I mean
No, I don't. Eternal introduced some new game mechanics and refined others to which the game is designed around. You have to utilize the game mechanics to successfully progress, which is no different than any other game. To me, it just sounds like you do not like the new and refined mechanics in the game. Which is fine, I just don't agree with your opinion or the way you chose to express it.

I'm glad to see other people are having the same issues as me.
I get that there are "new mechanics" that have been introduced. I just fail to see their usefullness.
It's just way too frustrating to me to battle through a shit-ton of enemies only to have to jump over or around some stupid lava 15 times because I can't
seem to hit the perfect keystroke.
I've changed my keyboard/mouse bindings at least a half dozen times......nothing works.....and I use an old ZBoard which generally is awesome for these games.

Last night I tried again......nothing but fail over and over......I uninstalled the game.....50 bucks flushed......RIP

I knew early on that this one would be more arcadey and that's totally fine. It really is a good game despite some design decisions that I don't personally agree with for a Doom game. It's excellent whether or not I think it could be tweaked a bit. :D (almost objectively) And whether you like it or not, you can't argue with the supreme quality of the game. It's polished above and beyond.

That said, I really wish they'd do another Doom 3 style Doom. It's still my favorite. I love the originals. I love 2016. I love Eternal. But Doom 3... ...mwah! (makes Italo-hand-gesture) ;)

I go back and forth between not liking it, or finding it just different. Let me explain with the Cacodemon: a grenade or a shotgun sticky will insta-stagger, which is the optimal way (i.e. the rules) to deal with it. However, you could stubbornly use any other ammunition, but to your disadvantage. Compare that to 2016, where, any weapon/tactic is as viable as any other (granted I'm sure there are optimal ways, but the game does not guide you into optimal strategies).

I will say I did not like the purple goo, or tentacles from the floor. Swimming in toxic water? Meh.

Oh no, game is mechanically intensive and requires more skill! That sucks!

I don't mind things like jumping mind you, or even some variety of weapons. The issue with Doom Eternal is hard to describe, but the jumping really ruins it.

I'll point out that I don't have a problem with jumping, and HLDM is one of my favorite shooters of all time. The problem with jumping in doom eternal is that it's not even a smooth action. It breaks the flow with grapple animation, among other issues I have with the game.

For me, I'm not really into the jumping either that much. Well, I don't mind the platforms, but the swing bars just make it feel like a Tomb Raider game or something. It just doesn't feel like Doom. Ok fine. My opinion of course, and I still play and enjoy it. But, that is a downside in my mind. The one thing that I really don't like, is the way they force how the combat is to be played.

People complain that there were those that only used the super shotgun in Doom 2016. Well, that's because it was a viable and enjoyable way to play. I personally used all of the weapons heavily, swapped fairly often, but did also lean on the shotgun sometimes. I want to know what's wrong with that? I also used the cutting tool and pistols a lot in Wolfenstein TNO. Was I not "supposed to"? I was able to play these games exactly how I wanted to, and anyone else could do the same. There were plenty (though not overly so) ammo dumps around, which I much prefer to only being able to get a decent stockpile through melee. It just doesn't flow right for me.

I still like the game, but I really wish I could play it a bit more how I want, using my own strategies. Like all previous Doom games.

That said, it's a very solid game IMO. I's say it's very far from sucking, and is in fact pretty excellent, but they kind of tuned it away from being my kind of Doom.

Yes, in Doom 2016 I favored the Super Shotgun and the Machine Gun with sniper mod as my workhorses. The Rocket Launcher, Gauss Gun, and Gatling Gun were reserved for bosses and mini-bosses, and I largely ignored the Plasma Rifle. In Doom Eternal the devs literally said they don't like players playing that way! They have mechanics in place so that you are heavily disadvantaged to not only using most weapons and abilities every arena fight, but also changing the mods around on the fly! And now you have not one, but two grenade types and a flame thrower to hotkey. So suddenly you're playing this weapon and ammo management mini-game every time, and that is NOT why I load Doom up. I can play a 4X strategy game if I want to play resource manager and OCD weapon builds tweaker.

What I want out of Doom / Quake a fast-paced game that doesn't shoehorn players into the devs vision of how to play. All weapons should be viable, ammo plentiful, and I shouldn't have to bind a hundred different abilities like I'm in a MMO.

I loved D2016, but D:E hardly felt like a direct sequel. How did I get a ship? Why aren't I kicking Hayden's ass? How did I get back to Earth? Where was I sent in the first place?

I think that's the point though, Ryom .
The goal of Doom Eternal is for every fight to feel like a very frantic, high-octane shooter, where you're forced into using every resource in order to come out the other side.
It's akin to having an action movie where a guy empties his clip and then drops the gun and has to grab another gun off the floor and use that. Although it isn't literally that in terms of gameplay, the idea of having to grab the ammo and use whatever you have available fits into that sort of frantic, frenetic pacing.

Doom Eternal I think wants players to feel uncomfortable. If you can use the same 2 guns through the same gun and ignore everything else, then they've also removed a variable that makes the game more challenging, such as proficiency with every weapon and using the right weapon for the job rather than the 1-2 you "want" to use all the time. Which is also why I think the movement set has been expanded. In order to play the game well, you have to be a master at moving through the environments with the move-set (wall climbing, double-jumping, bar swinging, not-withstanding), and not just have the ability to circle strafe around everything until its dead.

If that game style isn't for you, that's fine. But I wouldn't describe resource management as a core mechanic necessarily something that is only for MMO or 4X's or strategy games in general.

Let see, Marauder, 8 super shotgun shots point blank range (after green eyes) staggers each time but survives; 1 super shotgun shot followed by one Balista and 2nd super shotgun and you can glory kill him. Too many demons become bullet sponges unless you do what the developer wants you to do for a quick kill. Once you mastered the quick kills it becomes routine -> boring, yes you can deplete your rocket launcher into one Cacodemon, like 5 rockets or use one shotgun Sticky Bomb and you can then glory kill him. The weapon damage is unbalanced depending upon the enemy and restrictive. Yes I can deplete 1/2 of my super shotgun shells for one Cacodemo but you don't have the time nor the ammo to consistently do that with everything else going on without the next very repetitive grind.

Need ammo? Saw fodder, same animation and interjection/stop of action each time, over and over again, thousands of times, same animation saw saw saw. Oh why would that get boring? It does and is a distraction. Somehow if you flame demons they will give you armor, that is not so bad. Anyways you can get fodder to wonder around, to chase you, you can flame him over and over again and totally recharge your armor. It's kinda funny but also kinda stupid. Just allow one to live or one of the first one (they seem to always be around) to chase you to refill all of your armor. Get use to things not making much logical sense, spaceship looking like a castle, you have to get energy cartridges to unlock stuff that you own, because of course you would lock it up so you have to almost die to get access - list is endless.

Flying around like a monkey, using monkey bars, hugging cliffs is just an added element which at times I found fun other times frustrating and times it seems just stupidly done for one reason or another.

Looking at the top 100 games on Steam, Doom Eternal has been dropping fast, today it is a little bit over 7000 players maxed today on Steam, last week it was over 20,000. Replay value after you master it seems to be much lower than 2016 which did not drop off like a rock for top 100 games played. Don't play MP but that seems to also be the issue as well for this rapid drop.

In HDR the game is absolutely gorgeous, outstanding FPS for the visuals, smooth, artwork is astounding at times. Music is very good for the game/atmosphere. Reading the story, I guess it was supposed to be dramatic, epic and so on but after awhile it was not even worth reading and much better leaving Doomguy as a mystery. Let the player use his/her own imagination is definitely better than setting down a restrictive cannon.

I am on the 10th level, not having as much fun as I did in Doom 2016. I think it is a worthwhile game but more limited on replayability. It is challenging in a number of ways, can be overly complicated and then flow really well. If you are not moving in this game and dying over and over again, the game gets really bad quick and the fun disappears fast, in Doom 2016 that was not the case.

ID set the tone in 2016, then changed it. No surprises that not everyone was on board.
More like a different universe, timeline or dimension. Changes are more than one would expect for back to back games. I definitely agree with that.
