Doom Eternal

I used some of the cheats for the first time. Was going for the "Bat out of Hell" achievement (first mission in less than 11 minutes), so I equipped the Speed Powerup, Quad Damage & Infinite Ammo. Blew through the mission like a lightning bolt; it was both fun and different. Was surprised the Cheats didn't disable the achievements, but maybe that is because I've completed the game normally already. Anyway, went to the effort to collect everything, so I had to check some of them out. Famine is interesting for those of you who like a challenge.

Cheats only disable Slayer Gates. Some of the milestones are impossible without the use of cheats.

PSA: Just don't use any cheats until you beat the game. You can mess up your progression if you try using cheats in the middle of a playthrough.

First, this is the smoothest running game out of the box I've ever played. I'm playing it with rig in my sig and and the FPS never gets below 120 and usually tops out around 330. It's crazy. I have a wierd 21:9 1080p LG freesync 75hz IPS panel and it's fast and smooth all the time. Also running with every thing maxed out except motion blur, don't like it.

Second as others have said, the pace is nuts. The random zombies do way too much damage IMO. They are more of a threat then the larger beasts sometimes.

I wish it was a little less, arcadey. 2016 Doom seemed much darker and much more serious. I'll chalk that up to the bright purple and blue colors that you see all the time.

The more I've played it it does seem like the story is still dark and serious underneath, but the development team seems to have also embraced the internet memes. I wouldn't go so far as to call it Diablo 3 levels of cartoonery, but it's right there on the edge. I really like the game, but there are still things I shake my head at all the time.

I finished the game last night...what a ride...I'm worn out...I was going to immediately re-play it again but I need a break to relax for a bit...that was one high stress game...the final Icon of Sin boss fight was more annoying then difficult...having to deal with the trash mob while trying to kill the boss...they give you constantly respawning Crucible shards throughout the entire fight which makes killing every enemy fairly easy but they can get in the way when you're trying to hit the boss

I found the area right before the final boss fight to be more challenging...they throw everything at you- Marauder, Cyberdemon, Arch-Vile etc...overall this is one of the best first person shooter games I've ever played...I love that id Software added in new mechanics such as the chainsaw/flame belch and increased the difficulty...they werent content with just playing it safe and rehashing Doom 2016 over again

Been playing through it on Nightmare.

It's a pretty tough game, but not as difficult as one may think once you learn the mechanics of everything.

Still, pretty tough.

I'm about 70% through.

I've made the mistake of reading too much about it, so I've seen all kinds of spoilers.

Uninstalled this on the third mission or so.

- Enemies felt like bullet sponges (even on normal difficulty)
- Enemies have high poise (a shotgun blast to the face often wouldn't stagger them)
- Enemies do way too much damage
- Go 'rip and tear' a few thousand thousands of enemies, oh but the guns only hold a couple clips before running dry
- Use this chainsaw to refill ammo/life, but oh it takes forever to refill a charge. (its a fast pace game, feels like forever which is what matters)
- Rocket launcher felt like a peashooter, triple rocket blast to the face does pathetic damage and often doesn't even stagger the enemy
- Body blocking is an issue in some of the 'corridor' style arenas, but that's fine as it's to be expected

Even if I could put up with all of the above, the straw which made me hit the uninstall button was:
- Pointless AoE damage ground effects everywhere.
Want to chainsaw some almost dead scrub enemy? Nah he's in some AoE ground effect.
Want to execute kill some boss type enemy? Nah he's in some AoE ground effect.
Want to traverse this Arena mid battle? Nah there's random AoE ground effects spawning all over the place for no fucking reason.
Some enemies, like the Mancubus would sometimes spawn this massive electricity AoE ground effect when you down them.

I'll get back to the game sometime in the future, when there's mods that make it play more like Doom2016 which was a game I enjoyed from start to finish.

  • You have to use the right weapon for the job. Your arsenal and abilities are very limited at the beginning of the game. You only completed 3 missions out of 13 total. You don't even start to get the best hard hitting weapons until you're through the fourth mission.
  • The mechanic in the game is called Falter, and you have to cause a certain amount of damage in a certain amount of time. The standard shotgun superseded the pistol in this game, meaning its attachments are far more useful than a regular shot. You need to keep pressure up by utilizing the DPS combos in the game.
  • You have to keep moving and utilize your other abilities more. Flamer, Blood Punch, Glory Kills, etc.
  • It's to push you to use other guns and abilities so you don't end up relying on the Super Shotgun like people did in 2016.
  • It takes 10 seconds. If you use your other weapons at your disposal you won't even notice the recharge time when you actually need to use it to get more ammo.
  • Most heavies are staggered in two rockets, ready for a glory kill.
  • Yes, that is what trash mobs are for. If you stick with it in later missions you'll find that the AI of trash mobs is designed to protect the heavies.
  • That's what your aerial and movement abilities are for. There is also a rune that slows time if you hold mouse2 while in the air.

I never used any of the runes that slowed down time...almost felt like a cheat plus it doesn't fit the pace/style of the game...you're constantly running around and everything is fast so when you slow everything down it doesn't feel right...I always target enemy weak points while running around...once you get into the rhythm of the game you don't even think about glory kills for health, chainsaw for ammo etc, it becomes natural and instinctive

I never used it, either, but it is there as an option at least.

"AoE Ground effects" work in isometric games (like Diablo3, PoE, etc) because the camera is always pointing towards the ground, so it doesn't affect the general flow of the game to check their location or to avoid them. In a fast paced FPS game like this I want to be looking at the enemies, not constantly having to be checking the ground to see where the AoE effects are.

You have to do X, Y and Z
That's why I play Path of Exile, to play a game with in depth mechanics and complexity. When I play a Doom game, it's to "Rip and Tear", AKA Doom 2016. I'll wait for the mods, I appreciate the advice though. I don't regret buying the game as I know I'll get hours of fun from it in the future sometime.

I appreciate your opinion, but I think it is wrong to write off a game just because the mechanics were not as you were expecting. If the game had been called something different, would your opinion of the game had otherwise been positive? Personally, I think the depth of mechanics added to this game are overwhelmingly positive. My only complaints are with some of the artistic choices.

I agree...the main complaint I'm seeing about Eternal is that it's not exactly the same as Doom 2016 (and the Marauder enemy is too hard)...I actually like that it's different...they took some chances and made a different type of Doom game...once you get past the learning curve it's an amazing game

If the game had been called something different
If it were called something different and not made by iD then the reviewers would have brought up some of the issues that they gave it a pass on. I decided to check out some of the gaming subs/forums to see what others were saying about the game, and the feedback isn't anywhere as positive as the reviews for the game, many players having complaints about some of the changes they made.

The core gameplay is mostly awesome, I do like to some extent that they 'tried new things', and the game performs like a dream, but when I'm clicking on a Doom icon to start a Doom game up it's because I want to turn my brain off (mostly) and mindlessly frag. Not 'balance resources' or 'manage cooldowns' like an arpg or mmo.

I completed the third mission last night and I am loving the game. It's been a while since I last played DOOM 2016 but I don't remember the game having as many options in terms of weapon and skill upgrades.

My main "problem" is forgetting to use all of the tools at my disposal. I decided to play on Hurt Me Plenty the first time around, and it's still hectic and challenging in plenty of spots. But I've noticed that I will emerge from an intense battle, sometimes by the skin of my teeth, and then realize that I forgot to utilize my grenades or some of my secondary firing abilities. I can count the number of times that I've used the flame belch on one hand.

I suspect that on Ultra-Violence (and quite possibly later on in the game on Hurt Me Plenty), using these other things will be a must. I just need to get into the habit of remembering that I have more than an arsenal of primary weapons.

I am with polonyc2 and Armenius...I THOROUGHLY enjoyed 2016 but I like the fact that they've added some additional mechanics to the gameplay here. I do hope you end up getting your money's worth out of the game, Drexion. The level design is great and I love the architecture of some of the big facilities and machinery...everything just feels grand in scale. I'm even enjoying the platforming elements so far.

don't forget to use the Blood Punch as well...I found that to be just as important in dealing with some of the more annoying enemies...usually 1 punch followed by a few shots from your favorite weapon is enough to kill even the toughest enemies...a lot of thw weapon attachments are also very useful- Sticky Bombs on the shotgun, lock-on for the rocket launcher etc

I posted a quick initial review when I beat the first level, and I think almost every criticism I had went away after the 4th level and you had a wider array of guns to choose from. It is different then 2016, and yes, I had to adapt, but man, once you get the rhythm going (shoot, glory kill, drop a nade on a group, flame, throw a blood punch in there somewhere, repeat), I almost might say I like it a bit more then 2016. I distinctly remember earlier this week when playing, after beating the last slayer dungeon on Ultra-Violence, needing to hit ESC and take a breather/calm myself down. I honestly have no idea how long that dungeon took, you just go and go and go, 0 concept of time lol, I absolutely love it. I don't recall having a physical experience like that from Doom 2016, even on Nightmare.

Hoping to wrap the game up tonight or tomorrow, and then dabble with Nightmare... maybe... (I'm not looking forward to Nightmare Marauders AT ALL, hands down the toughest to deal with 1 on 1 IMO)

I don't know why but I find those enemies that throw up shields to protect other enemies to be funny...sometimes I'm running over to do a glory kill on someone when that guy throws a shield over him protecting him...during the later levels he does that a lot...the way that the enemies work together to form this Borg like hive mind is great

Yeah, Blood Punch as well, although I've noticed that I'll often use that by accident (and thus not at the optimal time...nothing like blood punching a couple of zombies when you're trying to deal with 2-3 heavies that are on your ass ).

I will also say this. I mentioned before that this is the first game I've played in HDR. I've been looking forward to the upcoming LG 48CX OLED due to its support for VRR and 120Hz 4K but man, I underestimated the difference that HDR makes. Big time. The difference when I enabled HDR mode was striking. Yesterday after I exited the game, I dropped back into SDR mode on the Windows desktop and started looking at some of the Steam screenshots I had taken. They looked like trash! Well, that may be a strong word - the game is still beautiful - but the difference is not nearly as subtle as I assumed it would be. SDR looks dull and less detailed in comparison. Now I want to go back and play other HDR titles like Shadow Warrior 2, Deus Ex: MD and Hitman...I suspect the improvements will vary according to the particular implementation by the dev team in each game but it's definitely opened my eyes to the difference the technology can make.

I loved Blood Punch as soon as I got it and I'd try to use it all the time, only to be tripped up when I haven't yet made the two requisite glory kills to charge it. But I had such a problem with Mancubi until I saw all the memes. A single Blood Punch and a Super to the face is enough to kill those annoyances quickly.

What I am forgetting to use is the Flamer, which I am getting better at now. One of the first upgrades with sentinel crystals you should get, in my opinion, is the reduced recharge time for it and then spam the hell out of it. Along with the upgrade that decreases recharge when killing enemies affected by your special abilities you'll never run out of armor again. I love flaming a group of trash mobs, using Blood Punch on them, and seeing a glorious explosion of health and armor drops along with that brutal bass drop. Much more satisfying than the Skittles dropped by a chainsaw kill. Now I just have to trust in the ice grenade more.

I also barely used the ice grenades...you're supposed to use them against those Whiplash enemies but I mostly killed them using other means...although using ice grenades to freeze an enemy followed by the Flame Belch does some nice damage

I have to say that some of the semi-forced mechanics are not my favorite thing about this game, but the game itself is so good that I decided to adapt. It did not take long to get used to them, and even enjoy some.

There are specific strategies to take out certain enemies. (usually using a precision shot to disable their weapons) Once this is done, it's easy to finish them off with other weapons or attack types. This game is a LOT more strategic than any other Doom game. I'm not sure I agree with it 100%, but the game is good enough to keep going until you're used to it. I didn't really get used to it, and fully start to enjoy myself until part way through the Cultist Base.

I suggest using the precision heavy machine gun alt-fire to blow the guns off of spiders and Mancubi :D at which point they are super weak. Also, if you can pick off some zombies with headshots from a distance, they won't get in your way when you get into the thick of an encounter.

Once you get a few Armor Upgrades, you can carry more ammo (even if the upgrade isn't related specifically to ammo). Get those armor coins from the ghosts as often as you can.

I'm not a chainsaw guy, so I use it pretty sparingly, but I've found that it's a lot less necessary the further I go. Pretty much only in a pinch during a large encounter, at which point using it makes more sense anyway.

I'd hang in there a bit longer. I think you'll find it's pretty good.

The AoE effects aren't that bad when you start learning the weaknesses of those enemies. You can also use environmental traps to clear out large sections of enemies.

the further you go, the more the chainsaw kills become a neccessity...no way will you survive most of the later fights by just finding ammo on your own

Drexion is adamant that any game with the "Doom" name should be a mindless shooter, so I don't think you'll change his opinion.

That's ok. Just thought I'd provide a few "tips" since I actually agree with many of his points. (just not to the point of letting it make me skip this game) I've found that I enjoy it.

If it was up to me, I would have made it a bit more flexible of a game. I actually don't think there's anything wrong with how people played 2016. I can see as a dev you want people to try out more of the game, try out different ways of playing, but I wouldn't have forced their hand quite as much. I would have made it MORE FRIENDLY to different styles of play, but not FORCING one over the other is all. Otherwise I think Doom Eternal is top-notch. If it was up to me, I'd play it my own way though, but maybe with a bit more of their encouraged strategies. Still, I'm loving it anyway. I'm definitely used to how it plays now.

I wonder if he liked Doom 3. That's one of my favorites.

We'll see. :p I've been going out of my way to find ammo, get armor upgrades, and yes, I've got a long way to go, so maybe things will be a bit different, but I intend to keep playing it with my own spin as much as possible. We'll see what happens.

It's not like I refuse to use the chainsaw. I use it quite a bit. However, I MUCH prefer to use my other weapons, which means picking off certain enemy types, being precise, using distance when possible, using the environment. I use standard glory kills quite a bit when in tight. So far I've done just fine. Like I said though, we'll see. I'm also playing on normal. I have no need to try and beat it at the other difficulties. That's never been my thing in the history of games. I almost always play on normal. I play plenty of hard games that are just hard period. No need to try and push it in others.

im learning that on level 2! kinda annoying but ill get used to it.

Made it to the ninth level, Taras Nabad, and now that I've figured out how to play, I'm really enjoying this game! I kicked the difficulty back up to Ultra-Violence because I was steamrolling Hurt Me Plenty. I think I expected gameplay to be the same as DOOM 2016 and was frustrated when it was not, but I grok the new playstyle - definitely intense and fun as hell.

another great thing about this game is that most of the levels are massive...takes forever to complete, especially if you're doing all the challenges, Slayer Gates etc...re-playing Doom 2016 again will feel slow after this

Testing my patience and attempting Ultra-Nightmare. A bit tough to balance glory/chainsaw kills and avoid the inevitable horde swarm.

Game was amazing, though. I don't really get Drexion's complaints... the reason it feels that way is because the upgrades are lackluster in the early game. Once you begin to explore and expand your arsenal/upgrades more, everything becomes much more chained and smooth to play. I enjoyed it immensely over the now-boring pace of Doom 2016.

Really regretting I spent the money on this game. I was expecting it to be like Doom 2016, but with better graphics, yet ended up very disappointed. It reminds me of how they strayed too far from the proven formula as they did with Rage 2. Most frustrating is all the goddamned jumping puzzles. It's jump, super jump, dash, dash, E to grab, etc. and then I still fall to my death! I guess I should have learned my lesson with Rage 2. Oh well, back to Borderlands 3. At least they know not to fix something that ain't broken!
