Valve Index In Stock at 10am PDT 3/9

What I want to know.....
Can you charge the controllers with a phone charger?
Do they have USB ports? You can charge the vive wands that way. I’d really prefer AAs, like oculus does, though.

Knuckles have USB-C ports (thank god). Vive wand MicroUSB (ick). Once my kid gets done playing, I will try the phone charger.

Mine showed up today. I'm just using the chargers that came with the Vive wands, since you can disconnect the USB at the charger end and replace the cable. Seems to be working fine.

I found a FAQs on Steam.
Valve says you can charge the controller using any phone charger that accepts a USB.
The Index controller accepts a "C" , also they recommend the "fast" chargers to well, charge your controller faster.

I put my headset on for the first time last night.
I am totally convinced this is how gaming should be.
Holy fuck, the demos for Half-Life Alex are just jaw dropping.
I am excite.

Right there with you, I just got mine setup and it is (finally) everything I hoped VR would be about 5 years ago. I previously had Oculus DK2, Oculus CV1, and Vive with TPCast. For some perspective, the index is as big an improvement over the Vive/CV1 as those two were over the old DK2.

The display and controllers are so damn good. The tracking is also noticeably better than the original Vive and waaayyy better vs the CV1 towers. Cannot wait for HL:A.

So the only thing I don't like so far about the Index controllers is that they seem to be hit or miss whether or not they will calibrate the fingers correctly. At first when I used them I thought one of the controllers was bad because of how wonky the finger tracking was, but then I saw that you have to sort of grip the controllers and then drum your fingers. That seems to work sometimes, but not always. The drumming fingers thing doesn't seem to do that much at all, I generally have to just turn off the controller and try turning it on again with my fingers against it in a different way. Any tips on making this easier? I don't want to have to go through a whole turn off / turn on controller thing every time I want to play VR.

When you go to the Index home screen in the headset, there are choices for the "Alex" pages.
Demo may have been a poor choice of words, but there are interactive "scenes" from the upcoming game.
An alleyway, a workshop, and one other.
None the less it's all I had hoped. It's like setting foot inside Half Life.

Try adjusting the position of the strap that goes over your hand on the controllers. The top bit pushes in and has four positions kit snaps to. It’s subtle but it definitely had an effect on the finger tracking for me.

Yeah, I've tried doing that but I'm not sure it made a huge difference. I'll keep messing with it - thanks.

Kinda just wish there was a "re-calibrate finger tracking" button somewhere in the UI, rather than having to turn off and turn back on the controller.

Ah just read fine print. Need index hmd for preview. Oh well one more day. May call in sick. But not covid sick.

okay. half life alyx is the VR game we all wanted but probably didnt deserve. My vive probably looks like crap compared to index, but I will never go back to a tethered headset.

The HMD isn't required, just an Index device. I only have the knuckles and have access to the interactive scenes.

So I placed an order for a index yesterday and is it really 8 week wait on the damn thing atm?

Yea it is looking that way :(.

When they first came back "in stock" on Mar. 9th, it was already showing 3-5 weeks, but I know some folks got them a lot sooner. This far past the date, though, that 8+ week estimate is probably more accurate.

Placed an "order" a couple of hours ago. We'll see how long it takes before they reach out.

My order was placed on March 9th about an hour and 45 minutes (IIRC) after they went live, estimated for 8 weeks since it was rather late, they asked for confirmation and payment on April 16th, and I finally got it yesterday, April 22nd.

Hang in there, it'll eventually come. Certainly beats being fleeced by eBay scalpers.

It's already set up, had a few USB-related issues at first, but now it's working pretty well and my Rift CV1 is all packed up for eventual sale. Just gotta test some other things like Revive so I can continue playing my Oculus Store titles through the Index.

Current estimates someone put together in a Google Doc are roughly 12 weeks. Oof.

Meh. My desire to get one is kind waning and it hasn't even been a month for me lol. I'll probably still get it tho.

Has anyone gotten any update on their order yet? Coming on 7 weeks for me and still nothing =(.

I think it’s finally time for me to jump on the VR train. I have waited this long and still not tried it.

I want the index.

question, do I need like a square, empty room to operate this thing?

or can you sit on your computer chair as you normally would ( in front of your PC ) and enjoy it?

**Also I’m assuming my 2080 Super / 9700K / NVME SSD would be just fine for the ideal experience correct ?

For stand-up games, you really need a big enough space that you can move around without punching the walls (or your TV, your mom, your dog, et cetera). I'd say about a 7' by 6' space is the minimum. There are plenty of games you can just play sitting down though (Hellblade, Moss, etc), and for those, you can just scoot your chair back from the desk, or sit on the couch or whatever.

Given the current limitations of the technology, IMHO, the games it does best are cockpit games like DCS World, Elite Dangerous or racing sims. For these games, you obviously have to just sit in a chair.

Your system should be fine. Depending on how sensitive you are to reprojection, you may find that you get reprojection more than you'd like with the 2080 Super, but you'll be well within the realm of playable.

Damn, thanks for sharing. I definitely need to figure out this space issue then before pulling the trigger.

So your saying even the super and 9700k isnt enough for the ideal experience? As in, you'd need a Ti ?

It really depends on the games you intend to play, and how insistent you are that you never ever, under any circumstances, see reprojection.

You'll probably be just fine, unless you're one of the anal retentive types who can't settle for anything less than all ultra settings at all times.

lol got it, just figured this setup would be enough to max everything out and not worry. Guess we’ll see.

Max maybe not but you will get a pretty damn good experience. Remember you are pushing 2 1440x1600 screens on the index. Index supports up too 144hz also. Generally most people don't get motion sickness at 90hz so that is the minimal fps you should shoot for which your systems can handle. The motion sickness part varies person to person. Expect to wait awhile to get a index also. It been more then 8 weeks for me and still so shipment.

Got it, that makes more sense. I didnt take into the account the resolution were talking about here to power this thing. Seems like its definitely the best one to get these days. Im seeing that the package i should be getting is the $999 one, correct? It has everything ill need? ( keep in mind i dont have any other VR headset or stuff )

Yes, if you have nothing you will want the full $1000 package.

FINALLY received my shipping/payment request notification from Valve. A little over 10 weeks later, not too bad I guess.

I actually just put in for a headset recently for the hell of it....see you guys in 12 weeks or something, lol.

I have a Vive in the meantime so no biggie.

It'll be interesting to see if restrictions being relaxed a bit will have any impact on the time frame going forward.
